I rushed through the school doors exactly five minutes after class had started. Fantastic. The first day of my junior year and I was already late. I quickly grabbed my stuff for algebra II and sprinted to class.

When I walked into the room the teacher immediately said "Natalya, thank you for finally joining us." He made sure to put emphasis on the word finally. My face flooded with heat as I hurried to the empty seat next to Kristan, my best friend.

"Nattie, you'll never guess the good news," she whispered into my ear. It was bound to be gossip about something. Gossiping was sort of a hobby for Kristan.

"There's a new guy from somewhere in the north. Alaska, or something like that. He is gorgeous," she told me excitedly.

"Have you seen his schedule?" I asked, truly curious. "Maybe we have some classes with him."

"Yeah, I did," she smiled.

"And?"

"He has all of our classes except for algebra II. I heard he's really smart."

Mr. Greenman droned on about the class rules and I had been doodling in a notebook when the bell rang. Kristan and I jumped up eager to get out of the room.

As we walked into literature, I scanned the room for new faces. I saw a few, but none of them were as "gorgeous" as Kristan had described. I felt someone tug on my elbow and looked up and Kristan dragged me to an empty table.

Across from me, Kristan was rambling about something that had happened over the summer and I completely zoned out. I started thinking about last year when I had been so obsessed with vampires. Not one thought of mine over the summer had been about them so why were they all of a sudden all I could concentrate on?

Then I recognised it. The increased heart rate and a faint tingling sensation all over my body. One of them was close. Far, far too close.

As I digested this, the door opened quietly. The teacher Ms. Varcher, greeted the boy who had just handed her a late slip.

"Hello Amaury. You can go sit in that empty seat," she said as she pointed to the seat next to me.

I froze. A vampire? Sitting next to me? I had to be dreaming. No. Suprisingly, this was reality.

As he walked toward me, I noticed how attractive he was. This had to be the person Kristan was telling me about.
