  • Chapter 3—
  •
  • “Got it!” Taylor called; his fist whacking against the ball in a spike.
  • “Point one for the Red Team!” Coach announced and a red ‘1’ appeared on the score board. Our team cheered and then quieted down for the next serve. I silently apologized to Taylor, whose superior hearing caught it and he smiled over his shoulder. We shifted, in which I was placed in the middle of our side and so was Oscar. He smirked evilly at me, his eyes never leaving my nervous ones. Oscar never liked me for some reason. I don’t know why; I’ve never done anything to him! And I didn’t like the glint he had in his eyes as the ball was set into play. It bounced around for a while and I was relieved of the anxiety of having to touch it. Suddenly, Taylor came up from behind me and propped the ball up to Miranda so she could hit it. He lingered by me for a second before he returned back to his spot.
  • My cheeks felt flushed as I faced forward and stared down at my feet. But it felt like someone was watching me with such fury, it was sickening. I looked up to see the white sphere heading to Oscar and the next thing I knew, he spiked it with all his strength and it went hurling into my face. I landed with a grunt and lied there in shock. My whole face was numb, yet thudding at the same time. I heard Taylor heated voice raging unintelligible things to Oscar. Something tickled my lip and I raised my hand to my nose. A red drop of blood clung to my finger and that was all it took for me to start panicking. I shot up and did everything I could to not embarrass myself in front of the whole class. As I focused, I took in the forms of Taylor throwing fist after fist at Oscar. The words ‘Fight, fight, fight’ were chanting in my head, but I paid no mind to it. Miranda gripped my arm to give me support and I held my head in one of my hands. I stood in the middle section of the ring of students while they watched the two boys fighting like the guys off of “Never back down” did. It was amazing to be honest. Only when I almost blacked out did I sum up my energy to stop the immature boys.
  • “Taylor...” I whispered, my vision going blurry. I tried to call his name again over the shouting, but to no avail. I collapsed onto my side and somebody screamed—probably Miranda.
  • “TAYLOR!” she cried, barging through the crowd and to him. A couple of boys—Miranda was popular among the guys—stepped forward to help her out by hooking their arms under Taylor’s and Oscar’s. They struggled to break free, which Oscar managed to do, so the football coach barged in and grabbed a handful of his hair. He was in a world of hurt....
  • Miranda tugged on Taylor’s shirt for him to follow him to where I was still laying half-unconscious.
  • “Jamie?! Can you hear me?” he called desperately. I made an effort to open my eyes. However, I felt too weak to do so. “Damn it! Somebody alert the nurse that we’re coming!” Two strong arms wound under my body and lifted me up; my head inactive on his chest and his heart obviously beating fast.
  • *****
  • When I woke up, all I saw was a white ceiling. A white curtain was draped beside the bed I was laying on and the faint whispers of Taylor’s anxious voice asking if I was going to be alright coaxed me to try to get his attention. I murmured his name. I was thankful he was able to hear it as he kneeled next to me at eye level. His face was sweaty—either from the fighting or being apprehensive—and his eyes scrutinized every aspect to see if I was alright.
  • “Hey,” he cooed, laying his head on the free space on my pillow.
  • “Hi...” I mumbled.
  • “How are you feeling?”
  • “Better now that I’m not alone.”
  • A smile crept onto his lips and he curled them in to hide it. He bowed his head for a minute before he looked back up at me, his honey eyes shimmering slightly. I reached out for him and he greeted it with his hands. Our hands laced and I suddenly felt a thousand pounds lift off of my shoulders.
  • “I’m glad...” he said in a hushed tone. “I was beginning to worry that you were down for the counting.”
  • I giggled, my free hand touching the braid that hung in front of his left eye. A deep purring sounded came from within his chest. The curtain was pulled back and we both jumped and got rid of any contact between us. Mrs. Hogarth smirked and said that I was free to go, just don’t make any abrupt movements. Taylor wrapped his arm around my waist and I did the same to him. My head was gently resting between his outer chest muscle and his inner arm muscle so I wouldn’t fall if I dozed out.
  • “Hey, Jae?” he said pausing.
  • “Mhm...” I mumbled.
  • “Ya know that chick, Zarra? The one you were talking about?” he brought up.
  • “Yea...” I replied getting curious. That’s right. I didn’t get to tell him about her earlier. Now was my chance.
  • “Well, when you were knocked out, she came to the nurse’s office telling me to tell you that she wanted you to meet her at the movies around 8 or so.” He explained, his eyebrows furrowing. “But what was weird was that she smelled....like him. By that, I mean she smelt sweet. And what was even weirder, she was wearing one of those paper mouth cloth thingies surgeons wear during a surgery.”
  • “That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you!” I boasted.
  • “What?” he inquired.
  • “She’s a....” I lulled to check to make sure no one was within earshot. Then I continued with my news. “She’s a vampire.”
