  • Chapter 2—
  •
  • The rest of the weekend sped by so fast I couldn’t even remember what I did Sunday. Except for my dream. It was the same one every time. I was walking through thick trees that reached endlessly to the invisible sky. An opening in the trees allowed for me to slip through. Then I saw him, standing in the middle of the meadow, nose pointing upward towards the clouds, and in all white. His name ran through my mind and tears began to well up. I moved one leg after the other and I held my hand out to him. When I called for him to turn around, he ignored me, so I reached for his shoulder, yet when I touched him, he disappeared in an explosion of sparkles. I begged for him not to leave me there, not leave with her. He didn’t listen. Instead his now dove form flew up into the heavens without a word. And every time I woke up—eyes widened with hot tears—and I would just lye there, trying to comprehend what just happened and then to convince myself it was just a dream right before I held my hands to my face and broke down in hysterical sobs.
  • If that jerk loved me so much, then why couldn’t he tell Psyche ‘no’ and be over with it?! I knew it was out of the question. That’s why I had to do everything I could to fulfill my original purpose to him by learning more magic every day and achieve more spells. Of course that meant my social time was at 0%, but I didn’t care. I was never social. Even with all the students bustling about in the front yard as I hopped out of the silver Mustang, not one of them grasped my attention for longer than 5 seconds. Excluding one girl. You know the one—the girl that sits next to me in math? The caramel eyed girl with the black pixie cut? Yea well, it’s taken me long enough to figure her out and I have come to a conclusion; one much like the one I made when I first met Taylor. How do I know? Well for starters, I’ve noticed her eye color changes every once in a while. In the beginning of the year it was caramel, then metallic blue, navy blue, and then back to caramel. Unless she had different contacts that she changed every month or so, my assumption was as good as any.
  • Today was the day that I would make an effort to at least talk to her and hopefully get to know about her odd ways. As I sat in my chair, she was doodling all over her hands. I cleared my throat to get her attention. It worked. Her head shot up from her work and I jumped in my seat. Her eyes....they were a shockingly bright green. I forced myself to smile. However, I was quite scared out of my wits with the way she scrutinized me like I was some kind of stranger. Then her eyes locked on mine. A chill shot up my spine and I could feel my blood freezing over. Suddenly a man’s face flashed through my mind. Whoever he was, he had something to do with this girl and I would be meeting him soon enough. By the time I realized I was staring at her, class had already started, yet her eyes remained on me. I opened my mouth to say something and I got the usual response: nothing. Shutting my mouth, I faced forward in my seat like the idiot I was. She grunted in an irritated kind of way and hissed,
  • “If you know I’m not human then why don’t you just spit it out!?” Wow...she was brave enough to say that aloud in a classroom full of humans. Ok, that proves she’s straightforward. I glimpsed at her from the corner of my eye. That’s when I first noticed how pale she was. Paler than Eros. Almost like ivory.... wait a minute! Pale? Changing eye color? Abnormal beauty? Holy monkies! I knew what she was!
  • “Sorry...” I mumbled, my heart racing in my chest. “I didn’t want to seem rude.” She scoffed and faced forward as well. Had I offended her? I hope not.
  • “Unbelievable...out of all the people he picks her.” she sneered more to herself than to me. I leaned over.
  • “Excuse me?” I said. She looked at me and a smile spread across her delicate face. The next thing I knew she was all bubbly.
  • “The name’s Zarra.” She greeted.
  • “Jamie” I replied. Zarra, huh? That’s an interesting name indeed.
  • “Oh I already knew who you were.” She waved her hand as if it was obvious. She already knew me? On a regular basis it seemed normal to know someone’s name in a class, but the way she said it was weird. Like she meant she knew everything about me. Not just my name. I pressed my hands between my knees and stared in no particular direction. This wasn’t good. Now I understood what she was talking about when she said “He picks her”. Somehow she was the only one of her kind able to do these sorts of tasks so they sent her to fetch me. Not good. Not good at all! Times like these I wished Taylor could read my mind since he was more in the front of the class then I was. To make things worse, we didn’t sit next to each other in Science anymore and we didn’t have the same lunch. I’d have to wait for 7th period. This was going to suck so much.
  • *7th period P.E.*
  •
  • The entire locker room was hot and humid with all the talking going on, and I didn’t hesitate in dressing and stepping out into the gym. Most of them boys were standing around in groups of 3’s and wore gym shorts and a t-shirt or a muscle-t. Not the see through ones, the kind that were extremely stretchy and clung to every curve on their bodies. Girls on the other hand were forced to wear a t-shirt, besides white, and shorts that had to have 4 inches from the crotch down. Obviously every girl would be tempted to wear cheer shorts.
  • I hurriedly picked Taylor out from the tall boys and rushed to him. He was one of the guys wearing a black muscle-t with his stomach showing a bit.
  • “Taylor, I need to talk to you.” I said from behind him. Taylor glanced over his shoulder, smiled, and excused himself.
  • “What’s up?” he asked as we walked a few feet away.
  • “It’s about that Zarra girl.” I replied quietly.
  • “Zarra? Who’s she?”
  • “She’s in our Math class. Ya know, the one with the black pixie hair?” I clarified
  • “Oh...” he mouthed.
  • “Yea, well I found something out about her today.” I nodded. He waited for me to continue. “She’s a--” the shrill sound of a whistle interrupted me before I could finish. Coach Flusche was yelling for us to line up so she could split us into teams for volleyball. I mentally cursed—I sucked at volleyball due to my right wrist breaking and getting fractured badly enough to get a brace—and told Taylor I’d tell him later. I stood next to Miranda and waited for Coach to pass me. I was on the Red Team. I perked up when I found out Taylor was on the Red Team as well. Sadly, we were playing against the Green Team which had Oscar, one of the most athletic guys in the school, on their side.
  • I bent my knees and held my right fist in my left hand, anticipating when the signal was to be shouted. Taylor was in front of me and I was thanking the gods he was good at this. I used to watch him go down to the beach to play volleyball with his friends. He was as good as Oscar.
  • “SERVE!” someone yelled and the ball was sent flying over the net. I snapped out of my trance and focused on the white ball being hit back and forth. It mostly on the left side until Oscar stepped up and his eyes made contact with Taylor, then it was launched in our direction. Crap. My knees buckled and I froze up. Oh no! What if Taylor couldn’t reach it in time? I opened my mouth to say something, but,
