A Touch of Magic (chapt. 22)

- Chapter 22-
- I watched as he turned his back to us and a ripple shot up his spine. With one leap, he transformed into the dragon I had seen out my window the other night. You had to be paying attention again, because if you weren’t and you blinked, you would’ve missed everything! I stood awkwardly beside his huge, thin stature and tried to figure out how I would sit on his back. He seemed to smirk under his thick interior. Finally, I found a comfortable spot and held fast to the feather-like mane on his neck. He crouched and shot up through the trees with a loud ‘CRASH!’ I hope Keith was alright and didn’t get hit with a falling branch or something. We went up and up until he evened out. When people said dragons were serpentine, they meant it. Since he didn’t have wings, he moved his lengthy body side-to-side slightly with his claws pressed to his underside. I looked below us to see Keith on his glistening contraption. It felt like we were outrageously slow, but just by looking at Keith I was able to tell were hitting somewhere above 70 m.p.h.
- And to think this beast was Taylor, warm honey-eyed Taylor......wow. That’s when I noticed we were heading opposite of the house. The trees grew thicker and taller underneath us and I began to worry if Keith was even there anymore. Sure enough, the roar of his engine broke through the leafy barrier. About a minute later, he stopped. Taylor dipped his head down and we were hurling towards the ground. Before we landed, he stuck his claws out and eased down. My arms were clinging to his throat, obviously afraid to let go. Keith walked up to me, held a finger to his lips, and beckoned for me to follow him. Taylor lay down so I could slide off. In the thin opening of the trees was a large meadow, teaming with flowers. And in the middle.....were Eros and Psyche. I lurched to go him, but Keith grabbed my arm and told me to wait. I bit my lip and did as he had said. She was standing in front of him, her lips moving with unheard words—and probably in Greek—while she held his hands in hers. Psyche...was beautiful. Her curly, golden hair tumbled over her shoulders and was held up in a neat ponytail.
- They were both clothed in Greek attire: Psyche, a white panned dress with gold Greek key trim, and a blue drape with attached cuffs; Eros, a white tunic with gold accents, and a burgundy cape. He looked more handsome than ever now that his true God form was revealed. He was even in his “sensitive” state. The long, silvery braid was gently cascading over his shoulder with an ivy crown around the top. I took an involuntary step forward, and then another, till I emerged through the bushes. Keith snapped for me to return, but I couldn’t hear him. My eyes were only focusing on Eros and nothing more. Psyche saw me and as soon as she gasped, Eros faced me. I froze in my tracks. I opened my mouth to say something and.... I choked. Brilliant Jamie. Your boyfriend is a few feet away, about to leave, and you choke.
- Eros seemed to be unable to speak either, so I closed the space between us.
- “Παραμονή μακρυά από το σύζυγό μου, εσείς θανάσιμοι!” (Stay away from my husband, you mortal!) Her smooth, ringing voice spat. Whatever it was, it was enough to tick Eros off. He held a hand to her, palm out.
- “Σιωπή! δεν έχετε κανένα δικαίωμα να μιλήσετε σε την σε έναν τέτοιο τόνο! (Silence! You have no right to speak to her in such a tone!)” he lectured. She shut-up. As he said so, I hurriedly clung to his baggy shirt. He faced me again.
- “Eros.... you lied to me.” I whispered, staring into his eyes. “You said you weren’t going to leave without telling me.”
- He shut his eyes and hung his head. “Yes, and I’m sorry. I thought it would be too difficult for both of us if I said ‘goodbye’.” His hands found their way to mine and held them to his chest.
- “I’d rather remember you as a prideful man rather a scared one.” I admitted. He smiled faintly, raising my hand to kiss it the backside of it.
- “Idiot...don’t waste your sweet kisses on my hand.” I nagged. Eros gazed into my eyes again, deciding whether or not to do as I said. I’m guessing he decided not to by the way he sighed deeply and pushed me back some. I gripped his hand and pulled myself back to his chest.
- “Stubborn as always, I see.” He chuckled lightly.
- “Always will be.” I smiled. “You look absolutely handsome, Eros, God of Love.”
- He clenched his eyes shut, a muscle in his jaw tightening when a tear slid down my cheek. He released my hands so he could hold my face, putting our foreheads together and looked intently at my pupils. They flickered back and forth with such obvious sadness that he was trying to hide with seriousness.
- “Please...don’t think of me as a God.....remember me as a friend.” He said sternly. Tears suddenly started to overflow and he shook my head lightly to get me to reopen my eyes. Tears of his own were starting to brim. “I won’t forget you....I swear. I could never do such a horrible thing.”
- He silenced my whimpers with his fingers and with a weak smile, he brushed my cheek affectionately. “I must go...” he whispered. Psyche had her nose turned upward towards the clouds. A ray of light burst through them and spilled onto the meadow where she stood. I felt his hands leave me when he started to backup. All I could do was grasp desperately for his touch to return. All I got was empty handfuls of air. By then, Psyche had morphed into a white dove and was flying into the clouds. I was in such a daze that my feet wouldn’t move. They were stuck in the spot.
- “Wait...Eros....EROS!” I screamed running after him. His stepped into the light just as I grabbed his wrist.
- “Jamie...let me go...” his voice cracked from it straining. My grip tightened and I stifled a sob. “Did you hear me? I said let me--”
- Hearing enough of it, I flung myself onto him and he stumbled backwards, my mouth shaping on his. I knew I had caught him off guard. Good.....he needed to realize how much I needed him here with me. Slowly, his arms draped over my shoulder and he gripped my sweater tightly as I did to his. I wouldn’t let go even if Psyche had to come down here and beat me to death. Eros was mine and I was his...at least...that’s what I wanted it to be. We parted and his nuzzled his nose by my ear, lamenting,
- “Stop it...” and then he kissed me just as deeply. His lips left mine and I bit my lip, acknowledging that this is how it was going to be from this point on. Eros unhooked his cape and hung it over my shoulders, smiling weakly when I looked at him confusedly. Without another word, he stood under the light. His form started to evanescence like dust, but it was sparkles. In his place was a white dove, cooing as it took off towards the heavens. I reached my hand out to him and cried out his name.
- “Let him go, Jamie.” Keith’s voice came from beside me. He put his hand on my shoulder in case I tried anything with my magic. My magic....huh, I failed him. I covered my mouth with my hands and made a silent promise.
- ‘I swear Eros.... I will achieve this spell. And when I do, I’m going to create you a barrier no matter what.’ I thought, a single tear trickling down my cheek. Taylor appeared on my left side and watched in awe as the birds disappeared into the skies and the clouds closed up. Psyche’s long journey was finally over...
- “He’s.....gone.” Taylor mumbled. No...He wasn’t gone. I could tell. I was going to faint in any moment--which I did—and as I laid there in the soft grass, a gust of wind blew over me, and a voice as smooth as silk whispered,
- “Sleep well, my love.”
