Can't say you're pretty (chapt. 5)

Romance Created on 3-15-08 Views(85) Story Rating G

  • Can’t say you’re pretty.
  •
  • Chapter 5—
  •
  • Well, how can I put it? There was something about that blind idiot that I loved. Over the next 4 months and ½, I checked on him daily around 3 or so to make sure he was fine. At first, he had a serious problem with “seeing” me every day, but after a while, I think he started to get used to it. His friends even started to recognize me when I jogged by the soccer field asking for his whereabouts. It was practically a routine. But then.... summer ended and seeing as I was the head chef of my cooking school, I had to attend “Helmsley’s Chef Academy”. I’ve been there for almost a year now and I love it.
  • I had everything under control from running from work to check up on Landon (none of his friends ever did so) during my break and running back to work. The whole lot of it was doing great until she showed up.
  • “Hey, Landon?” I called rummaging through his refrigerator.
  • “Yup.” He replied from the living room.
  • “Besides the fact that you’re blind ¾ of the time, why don’t you ever go on a day before 2 or so?”
  • “Ash, we’ve gone over this a million times.”
  • “And a million times I don’t get it! If a girl like me accepts you as a friend, why can’t another girl accept you as their boyfriend?!” I complained.
  • Landon sighed, standing up and walking over to me (It was only 12). He stood beside me as I fixed myself an apple. I could feel his golden eyes watch me for at least a minute until he sighed yet again and returned to the couch. That was pretty pointless....
  • “It’s not as easy as you think, Ash.” He mumbled.
  • “Then make it easy for me to understand.” I boasted following him. He got up and went over to the stairs, obviously not in the mood to explain himself for the millionth time.
  • “Landon, wait up! Why have you been acting so odd lately?!” I asked tugging on his sleeve.
  • “BECAUSE,” He shouted facing me, “, there’s someone else!”
  • “What do you mean ‘someone else’? I’ve been here for 4 months. How could there be someone else?” I retorted.
  • “You’re not the only woman who accepts me for who I am.” He muttered. I didn’t know if I should take the news positively or negatively. I would have to construct a pro’s and con’s chart later.
  • “Well.” I droned.
  • He raised one of his eyebrows. “Well what?” he asked.
  • “Well what’s her name!” I persisted. Landon must’ve expected a different reaction because he stuttered slightly when he said her name—Gabby. Hm...That was a nice name...I guess. Shaking my head vigorously, I skimmed through possible questions I could ask. They had to sound sincere, but still pushy for answers.
  • “How come I never see her?” I frowned, intertwining my fingers with the necklace he was wearing. This wouldn’t be the first time I unconsciously began messing with it. I always touched the necklace if I was close enough when I was talking to him or when he’d set it down on his desk before a shower. Even though he wore at least 5 necklaces—one was a choker, the second, a dog tag, the third a metal cross, another was a thin rope with a shark tooth, and my favorite one: thin steel x’s leading to a shimmering crescent moon dangling from the bottom—it was the oddest of them all One would think it looked awfully painful.
  • “Um....” he began. “...because she’s been sick with something that requires for her to stay in the hospital.” He lowered his head and crossed his arms over his chest. “When she moved in with me 3 years ago, she caught an illness that caused a dangerously high fever, vertigo, and severe pain. I did everything I could to convince people she was alright so she could stay here with me, but it got worse and worse, and I had to.....let her go.” He struggled to hide the obvious pain in his voice. “And now thanks to my forever condition, I can’t see her during visiting hours. I’m stuck with lousy phone calls and the camera on my computer. But half the time she’s asleep.... it gets harder every moment I’m away from her...”
  • I frowned slightly, thinking about how lucky I was to be with Gabby’s.....wait, what was their relationship?
  • “What is she to you?” I wondered. Wow my French accent was strong...Instead of lightening the mood, he only got tenser.
  • “She’s.....my fiancée.” He muttered, avoiding eye contact.
  • My pulse immediately picked up. “So wait....I’ve been here with Gabby’s fiancé while she’s stuck in the hospital?!” I thought aloud. “Oh my god...I’m such a horrible person!” I knelt and buried my face in my hands and my hands in my knees.
  • “What? No, Ash, it’s nothing like that! You’re actually helping me with my promise to Gabby!” he explained lifting my face so he could see it.
  • “What do you mean?” I inquired staring into his eyes. He smirked and caught a falling tear.
  • “You see, Gabby was worried that I’d get lonely, or go crazy without her accompanying me, so I promised I wouldn’t. Ash, thanks to you, I’m not lonesome.” He smiled.
  • “Yea, ‘cause I’m a total pest.” I sniffled and tugged my face out of his hand. Landon guided it back to his view, this time both of his hands stayed on my cheeks.
  • “No, you’re not a pest, Ashley. You’re the complete opposite. I relish the thought of seeing you at 8 in the morning every other day. To be honest, I’m honestly savoring every moment I have with you.” His cheeks flushed slightly.
  • “Impossible.” I disagreed.
  • “Seriously! Why don’t you believe me?”
  • No words aided me in answering his question. I didn’t know how to explain myself. It was just a gut feeling that he was just saying what he thought would please me in any way possible. Curling my lips in, I shook my head and closed my eyes.
  • “Why are you so self-conscious?” he groaned. “Someone as beautiful, and smart, and incredibly funny as you shouldn’t worry about a thing.”
  • “That’s what you think.” I pouted.
  • “Yes, yes it is.” He pulled me to his chest, sighing into my messy hair. “Ashley, Ashley, Ashley....when will you understand that I need you here with me? I’d be in an asylum if it wasn’t for you holding me down.”
  • These words that befell his lips....what did they mean? They were so foreign, so weird, so not meant for me. Why was he doing this to me, to Gabby?! It was unfair one way or the other. Yet...they were comforting to my shredded heart. I could feel its heavy pulse once more pounding from behind my chest. I’ve heard such words before—rephrased with a different tone—but these that came from Landon, they felt genuine and serious, like he truly meant it. Maybe I just wanted to believe that for once a guy wasn’t using me for my body and actually grew fond of my personality. That or he was like all the others....
  • Suddenly he started pushing me away.
  • “What’re you doing?!” I whined clinging onto him.
  • “I’d figured I’d weirded you out with what I’d said seeing how long it was taking you to respond.” He explained.
  • “Nooooo!” I argued, worming myself back into the warm circle of his arms. He bounced when he chuckled, standing up to see if I would let go. I didn’t. Landon vigilantly walked across the house to the game room with his hand around my waist, making sure I wasn’t going to trip on the one step, but when he reached the door rim, he froze for a strange period of time until I looked up to see what was wrong. He had his eyes closed, jaw stiff with concentration, and was taking deep, prolonged breaths as if he was calming himself down.
  • “Landon?” I called softly. His eyes opened.
  • “Hm?” he replied.
  • “What’s wrong? Were you having a moment?” I teased.
  • He seemed to have forced a smirk. “Sorry to burst your bubble sweetheart, but I wasn’t.” his grip on my hip became more weary, like he was unstable to a great extent. His smirk subsided and in its place was a frown. “Now be so kind as to lead this blind man to his room.”
