• Chapter 30—

• Handing the plastic card to the cashier, Alice waited patiently for the price of the dress to be paid off. Yea, so what if it was over $900 worth? Suzette wanted it and that was all that mattered. She glanced over her shoulder at Suzy, who was standing near the door looking red-faced and with black smears of eyeliner residue running down her cheeks. She sniffled for the 100^th time, rubbing her palm on her nose. Alice grabbed the hanger belonging to the dress and walked towards her, placing a sweaty hand on her friends back to signal they were leaving. There was no need to stick around anymore. Not if that meant there was even the slightest chance of running into Jake again.

• Alice gripped the steering wheel in her hands, every now and then checking to see if Suzy was alright. She usually found her staring out the window with a silent tear streaming down her face. If Cyril saw her like this, there would be no end to the feud between the two men. To make matters worse, tonight was the bachelor and bachelorette party, one being at Contours again while the other was at some club named ‘Dark Votive’. Knowing Suzette, she was probably going to sit this one out. Alice couldn’t blame her.

• She pulled up to Suzette’s hotel, leaning back in the seat to take a moment to breath.
•  
• “You ready?” she asked.
•  
• Suzette jolted from the sound of her voice, and nodded hesitantly.
•  
• “Good. Now try to act like nothing happened.” She directed taking her hand and leading her through the decorated lobby, to the elevators. The number 18 was pressed already, so they stood there behind a couple of mean wearing business suits. Alice felt the grip on her hand tighten as one of the men glanced back at her slyly and then continued with the conversation at hand. Luckily, those two got off at level 13. She knocked on the door that said ‘235’ and waited for the door to be opened. She checked on Suzette one last time—she looked pretty good—just as Cyril answered them.

• “Oh, you two are back early than expected!” he forced a smile.
•  
• “Is that a problem?” Alice asked, cocking an eyebrow. He was wearing a tuxedo shirt, dress pants and shoes, with the bow hanging lazily over his shoulders.
•  
• “Nope. Not at all! Suzette, could you go wait for me in our room? I’ll be there in a minute.” Cyril said, nodding her off. Alice watched her close the door carefully, scowling when his expression turned hostile.  At first, he casually strolled to the window, spun around gracefully, and sat on the window seal with his arms crossed, his eyes fixed on her face.

• “Tell me,” he said after a sharp in take of breath, “do you think I’m doing my part in this engagement? Be honest, Alice. I’d hate for you to lie to me.”

• She blinked her shock away from hearing such a question.
•  
• ‘Be honest.....’
•  
• Alice shifted her weight to her other leg and crossed her arms over her chest. “If you want my honest opinion--”

• “That’d be nice.” He interrupted her, his gaze more serious than before.
•  
• “If you want my honest opinion,” she continued, “.......no.” She felt her chest swell up with anxiety, hoping Suzette wasn’t eavesdropping on their conversation.
•  
• Cyril’s eyes narrowed, his lips pressing together in a firm line. She saw a muscle in his jaw pop, then tighten as he breathed in through his nose and rocked back on the window so he was now standing. He took a long, casual step towards her while she took a weary step back. When it came to Suzette’s relationship with him—intimate or not—he got pissed very easily and wasn’t easy to negotiate with afterwards—meaning he held a grudge forever. From the looks of it, he was doing his all not to start yelling or to even touch her at that.

• “So you’re saying.... I’m not good for her?” he clarified, his voice sharp with resentment.
