Death Of Originality...And A Salesman.
|
I'm certain that there are some that recall the story yesterday, by LoveXMehXPleaz, about how there was no originality to Testriffic's love stories.
It was not well recieved.
Which is really absurd. Many of the negative comments, I'm quite certain, came from writers. Which makes it even more ridiculous.
I'm certain that some are going to complain over me bringing this point back up, but it needs to be said. And perhaps, people will listen if I point out one very valid, very important fact.
IF YOU ARE A TRUE WRITER, YOU SHOULD NOT BE UPSET OVER THE OPPURTUNITY TO IMPROVE YOUR WRITING.
It's that simple. A user offered valid and truthful criticism. And people shot it down. They did not want to listen, they tried desperately to defend themselves, instead of thinking...
"Here's an oppurtunity to improve my writing. I want to be a better writer."
The fact of the matter is if one is serious about writing, then one does anything to improve their writing. Reading books helps. Offering their work for criticism.
Oh wait, that's what Testriffic is for.
When someone posts a story up, they usually want feedback on it. Criticism. Of course, I'm positive most people just want good comments.
"This is awesome! Write more!"
When someone points out flaws, people rather ignore that, then try to see the flaws and correct them.
Publishers will tell aspiring writers to show their work to family and friends for criticism. Truthful criticism. Not a bunch of 'awesome' comments.
A serious writer, tries constantly to improve his/her work. I read the notice yesterday that pointed out the over-cliched, trite plot lines and characters people recycle. It was true, and it really wasn't that bitchy. Some of the comments responding to it were pretty bitchy, and somewhat hypocritical.
"If you don't like the stories, don't read them."
"If you don't like criticism of your stories, don't post them, and don't read this."
I'm reviving this particular topic, because it is very near and dear to my heart. I am a great lover of great literature. I am also an aspiring writer. If someone points out flaws within my own work, I don't bitch and moan. I try to correct it.
I want to be a better writer.
All great writers, also have great editors. Who correct their work.
No one on Testriffic is such an awesome and spectacular writer that their work is pristine and absolutely perfect.
While I'm at it, I'd also like to point out that spell checking your words is also a good idea.
Indent at the beginning of each paragraph, and when someone speaks.
Please don't use 'cutsy' fonts or weird font colors, as it makes it difficult to read the story.
Vampires are fine to write about, but try to make them different. We can't all be Anne Rice.
Stories about someone falling in love with their rapist, are terrible. Rape is not something to glorify in prose.
Testriffic has enough sex stories, this site is not a porn site.
Stories of mis-matched lovers tend to be overdone. While I don't expect to see the next Romeo and Juliet, a certain amount of creativity is good.
What makes good fiction, good fantasy, is the element of truth within it. There's more to it, then making up a bunch of stuff. All myths, have a grain of truth within them. That's why we love them, we love that realism in there that makes us think....
"Hey, maybe this is possible. Maybe this could actually happen."
I will admit, there are good writers and good stories on here. But no one is above criticism, or improvement. I don't expect work on level with C.S. Lewis, or Tolkien. But we can aspire to write at that level.
If you don't like what I have written, I have to tell you. I really don't care. Responding with bitchy comments, is only going to make me laugh.
Besides, if you don't like this, then don't read it.
Cheers!

I am SO SICK of people just saying "this is awesome!" on all my stories.
no, it's not.
it basically sucks.
without the critisism, I'm having issues making it better. |

Wow. Thank you. I am really glad you actually understood where I came from. There are a lot of good writers on here. But they don't use their potential to the fullest. :] I am thank you lots. Btw I love your stories:] |

Thank-you so much for putting this out here for all to read. I completely and wholeheartedly agree with you on every aspect you brought to attention. I also am an aspiring writer and I love constructive critisism! It can be overwhelming and discouraging to have your work critiqued on every level, but how else are you going to improve? I appreciate and value all my helpful suggestions more than the accustomed 'cool!', 'awesome', 'amazing' and 'wow'. Finally a voice of reason: Kudos!!! |

To be honest i actually agree, Most people just say "Hey you are good, keep me posted on whatever you do okay" But alot of the times the story isnt really that great. I'm sorry but i'm not really a big fan of Cassie Jahn, Yes i love Romance stories but i dont like heavy heavy porn, light and gentle every once in a while is fine. Thank you for saying this
p.s Anne Rice is AWESOME |

Thank you for writing this; I agree whole heartedly, but it's obvious most people are against self improvement. |
