The Velvet Chronicles Five

NonFiction Created on 9-29-07 Views(86) Story Rating G

“Hello?” Chance picked up the phone

“Hi.”

“Velvet?” Chance asks. I sort of gape at the wall and then will myself into uttering a squeak, a word, anything before he hangs up.

“Hi, Chance, um, how did you know it was me?”

“You’re the only girl that has my phone number. I told you I was being unorthodox.”

“Don’t you have a girlfriend?” What’s with the stupid questions? I seriously question banging my head on the desk.

“Love is talking stupid.” Sometimes, I wish my Grandpa’s sayings wouldn’t pop into my head all the time. I shake it off as Chance replies.

“No. I’m not ready to think about marriage yet.”

“Marriage?” Who said anything about marriage?

“Yeah. I think dating is just prep for marriage that people have distorted. I’m just not ready to be looking for the perfect person yet.” He coughs, “But that’s not why you called, is it?”

            “I don’t really know why I called.”

“Sounds like a God thing since it so happens I’m free this evening. Why don’t I meet you somewhere and we can talk?” A God thing? What the heck is a God thing? I shrug it off.

            “I don’t have a license yet. I’m only a sophomore.”

“Where do you live? I’ll pick you up.”

            “In Odessa. Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I’m serious. Just give me your address. “I don’t think, I just do and he jots it down. I check my makeup and throw on a hoodie, my cover-up for a few noticeable scars that creep up my arms. I’m ashamed. Chance is perfection. I peer down the landing where grandpa is snoring to the tune of the Gilligan’s Island theme song, which grandma is engrossed in downstairs. I slip through the kitchen and out the back door, waiting by the driveway for Chance. Chance. A stranger, I don’t really know him, and my grandparents have no idea where I am going. Brilliant, you are brilliant, Velvet.
