Today was a very important day of my life. It was my first time seeing my mother in twelve years. I was really nervous because I didn’t really remember anything about her.

All I remember is that when I was four years old, she lost me in a custody battle with my father. He filed against her as being an “unfit mother” and since back then my mama was actually a prostitute, my daddy won complete custody over me.

Living with my dad was cool though. He was a business man and he made a lot of money [I don‘t know how much, though]. We stayed in a marvelous house in the beautiful Los Angeles, and I went to Private School. My mama stayed in Atlanta though, that’s where she’s from. My dad said she was a receptionist at a community clinic and that she was doing better, because he was still helping her out. I just never understood why my mom and dad split up, or whatever happened. I don’t even recall my dad ever even telling me how they met.

But that didn’t even matter.

I was gonna make the best out of the situation. I mean, this was my mother, and I haven’t seen her in twelve years, and that’s not the way things need to be…

When I landed at the Atlanta National Airport, it was 1:00 am on a Monday, and I left L.A. Saturday afternoon. Talkin’ bout a long flight. I was missing my friends already.

Leslie and Angela. They tried to give me sooo many reasons not to go.

“What about boys? Shopping Sprees! Pool Parties!” Leslie exclaimed.

“When I come back home, we’ll have a lotta time to catch up,” I promised.

“We’re gonna miss you,” Angela said.

I gave them both a hug then I left.

My dad dropped me off at the airport with my plane tickets and a prepaid visa card with $1200 on it…

He told me to call him whenever I needed anything, then he sent me on my way. So now here I was, in the city of Atlanta, Georgia…

At first, I was scared and started to wander around the airport, but then, a woman across my way started yelling my name at the top of her lungs.

“Sasha! Sasha Remington! Sasha!”

I followed the voice until I got to the woman who was calling my name.

I knew that it was my mother!

She was beautiful.

She had the most drop dead gorgeous eyes with an hour glass figure, and although she had on her work uniform, you could tell she was in good shape. She didn’t even look like someone who would be an ex- prostitute. Yet alone a prostitute.

You could tell she was ghetto, though!

But she was beautiful.

Which made me question myself more on why my dad left her.

“Mom?” I asked as I walked up to her.

“Sasha? My baby?”

She looked me up and down and began to cry.

“It’s me!” I exclaimed

She wrapped her arms around me and almost lifted me off the floor from hugging me so tight.

“I can’t believe I ain’t seen my own child in sooo long!”

As I heard her talk, I noticed she had a very southern accent.

“Well I’m here now, mommy…”
“Oh my goodness, let me- let me help you with your bags…”

She helped me carry my luggage to the trunk of her car.

“I bet you tired, ain’t ya?” she said.

“Yeah, I’m sooo tired.”
“You hungry?” she asked.

“Yes, I am!”
“Well we can stop at Krystal’s.”

“What?” I asked.

“Krystal’s…”
“What’s that?” I asked.

“You mean to tell me that y’all don’t have a Krystal’s in Los Angeles?”

“I don’t know.” I admitted.

“Well, I’ma buy you a castle burger… I’m so happy you here, it’s a blessing, and we got a lot of catching up to do…”

“Yeah,” I agreed.

“So, how’s life in the fab lane?” she asked.

“The Fab Lane?”

“Girl, your daddy got money, don’t take me for no clown… I know you living the life. Shit, you better be living the life, after I lost you to him…”

“Well things are pretty normal. I go to private school-”

“Private school? Really?”

“Yes,” I said.

“Wow, and where you and your daddy stay now?”

“We stay in the hills…”

“Ooh, like the TV show?” she exclaimed.

I laughed.

“Not quite,” I said.

When we pulled up to the Krystal’s restaurant, and I realized it was fast food, my stomach dropped. I hated greasy, fatty food.

“Um, excuse me, uh, m-mom…” I said hesitatingly.

“If you’re uncomfortable calling me mama, you can just call me by my name, that’s fine, I understand…”

I could hear the sadness in her voice when she said that…

“Um, actually, mom, I just wanted to know if they served salads or something here.”

She looked at me and laughed.

“Yeah, if you get a hamburger and take off everything except the lettuce and tomato,” she joked… “what, you must be tryna watch that model-like figure.”

I blushed. I was flattered at my mom’s complement. don’t blame me for being conceited, I had every reason…

“Yeah, you cute, and you know it… I’m so happy you here..”

She reached over and kissed me on the cheek…

After she ordered our castle burgers, we headed to her house.

I actually ate my food, too. And it was delicious!

“Well here we are, home sweet home!”

When we pulled up to her house, I noticed it was very nice, considering the surroundings.

It was nearly two in the morning and there were guys on the corner, and people lingering around, and playing loud music like it was two in the evening…

“Welcome to Bankhead County…”

“Bankhead?”
“Yep… far from the hills, ain’t it…”

“Yes it is,” I agreed.

“Well C’mon and let me lock up this house…”
we went inside and after my mama “locked up the house”, she showed me around, and showed me where I would be sleeping.

My room at home was twice the room’s size, but it was big. Although the master’s bathroom in my dad’s room was probably bigger than two rooms in this house combined.

It sounds harsh, but it’s true.

“Well, here’s where you gon’ be sleeping at. You can take a bath or shower or whatever in the morning or you-”

“I’ll wait till tomorrow, I’m really tired…” I said.

“Okay, I’ma take you to get some chicken and waffles for breakfast in the morning, aiight?”

“Huh? Chicken and waffles????”
“You’ll like it, I promise…”

“Okay, mama…” I said.

“I love to hear you call me mama…”

“Goodnight mommy…”

“Goodnight, baby…”
I got in the bed [fully dressed] and went to sleep.

My mom cut off the bedroom light and shut the bedroom door…

Since it was two a.m. in Atlanta, I figured it was at least eleven p.m. in LA.

I’d call daddy tomorrow to tell him how things were going…

So far, so good though…

When I woke up later that day, it was 12:00 noon…

“Oh my goodness, that was a great sleep…”

I slowly dragged myself out of bed, and then searched my bags for my toothbrush and my travel-size crest toothpaste and my dove soap.

Then I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth and washed my face.

Afterwards, I took a shower and got dressed.

When I got out of the bathroom, a delightful smell filled my nose so I followed it to the kitchen where my mom was frying chicken

“Good evenin’,” she greeted.

“Good afternoon…”
“I wanted to take you to eat this morning, but you looked like you was still tired, so I let you sleep late…”

“Um, mom, is there anything to eat?” I asked.

“Um, yeah,” she said.

She went and took a plate out of the microwave that she had warmed. It contained collard greens and cornbread. She placed a piece of chicken on the plate.

I sat down at the table and she sat the food in front of my face.

She gave me a glass of “Kool-Aid” too.

“Thank you…” I said.

“Well you better eat because I ain’t made no groceries yet.”

I picked up my fork and slowly ate a scoop of my collard greens.

“Mm, this is good,” I lied.

The truth was, I hated collard greens.

“You don’t look like you like it…”
“Actually, I hate greens.” I admitted.

“Well just say that, you don’t have to eat it if you don’t want it,” she said.

“Okay, thanks.”

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

Then there was a knock at the door.

“I got that,” my mom said.

I followed her to the front door, and there was two girls standing there.

“Hey Ms. Latasha, how you doin’ today,” one girl greeted.
“Hey Sheena, hey Manda, what y’all two want?” my mama asked.

“Nothing, my mama wanted me to ask you if you had some corn meal.”

“Oh, yeah Sheena.”

My mama went to the kitchen to get the cornmeal and I just stood there in the living room staring at the two girls, and they stared right back at me…
“Hey,” one of them finally spoke up.

“Oh, hi,” I responded.

“Who are you?”

“Oh I’m-”

“Here you go Sheena…”
My mom came back with the cornmeal and gave it to the girl.

“Oh, c’mere y‘all, I wanna introduce y’all to my daughter…”
“Your daughter???” the girl exclaimed.

“Yeah, c’mere Sasha…”

I walked over and joined my mother and the girls.

“Hey Sasha, my name Sheena.”

“Hi, Sheena.”

I extended my hand out for her to shake it, but instead, she dapped me off.

“My name Manda,” the other girl introduced herself.

“Hey, Manda…”

These two girls were so ghetto-looking.

Sasha was light-skinned with a long ponytail in her hair, huge earrings in her ear, and shorts on so high, they could’ve been underwear. She had green contacts in her eyes, with a white shirt on, and some red pumps.

Manda on the other hand, had long, curly hair, and she was light brown. She also had on some high shorts with a white and gold graphic t-shirt on, and some white and gold pastry kicks… they both were pretty, though.

“Oh my gosh, I love your shoes!” I said to Manda.

“Thanks, I got every single pair! High tops and low tops…”
“I love Vanessa and Angela Simmons’ Pastry shoe line…”
“Well, Ms. Latasha, can we steal Sasha from you for a while?” Sheena said.

“Yeah, why not show her ‘round the hood. Show her how we do it in the A-Town.”

“Okay, we gon have her back before midnight…”

“I gotta go to work at five, so here, take my key, Sasha…”

She threw me the key, then Manda and Sheena dragged me out the house…

“So how old are you?” Sheena asked.

“I’m sixteen,” I answered.

“You know, you real pretty,” she complimented.

“Thank you,” I said.

“You ever considered being a model or something?” Manda asked.

“Um, No…”
“Well you should, you got a great shape… I ain’t gay or nothing, I’m just giving you your props…”

“Thanks again…” I said.

“Well let me go inside and give my mama this cornmeal,” Sheena said. “Come with me, y’all….”
Manda followed her inside.

“C’mon, Sasha, don’t be scurred…” she said, mispronouncing “Scared”.

So I followed them in the house and they had children running everywhere.

“MAMA!!!!” Sheena yelled.

“I’m in the kitchen!”
Sheena went to the kitchen, and I sat next to Manda on the couch.

One of the little boys that were in the house came and actually sat on my lap and wrapped his arm around my shoulders.

He looked like he was about 11 or twelve.

“Hey… you cute.” he said, puckering his lips at me.

“JJ! Leave that li’l girl alone!” Manda yelled pushing him off me.

“Who is that?” a little girl who looked about seven asked Manda.

She was sooo cute and she had silver caps in her mouth and the most beautiful hair.

“That’s Sasha…” Manda said.

“Hey Sasha…” the little girl greeted. “My name is Alexis, but you can call me ‘Lexis.”

“Well hi, Lexis…”

“How old you is?” Lexis asked.

“Sixteen…”

“Oh Sasha!!!! C’mere!” Sheena called from the kitchen. “I want you to meet my mama!”
“Where’s the kitchen?” I asked Manda.

“Straight to the back…”

I went straight to the back…
“Look ma,” Sheena said, pointing at me.

“Who is that?” the lady asked.

“Ms. Latasha daughter…”
“LATASHA DAUGHTER???!” she exclaimed. “She is beautiful! Girl from the pictures she showed us, you’ll think she was a li’l bitty baby, but how old are you?” she asked.

“I’m sixteen…” I replied.

“Oh you right there with Sheena and Manda. Well my name Mina… you ain’t gotta call me miss, just Mina. Alright?”
“Okay…”

“It was nice meeting you… and Sheena, I’m finna fry some fish and make some baked macaroni and barbecued ribs. Don’t bring no niggas in my house and let them eat up my food like they crazy, because I gotta work tonight…”

“Alright mama,” Sheena said.

“And make sure that Reginesha come get her children tonight, too.”

“Yes mama, okay… let’s go Sasha…”

I followed her out the front door, followed by Manda.

“Where are we going now?” I asked as we walked up the street.

“Around the corner to the park…” Manda answered for me.

“We wanna introduce you to some people…” Sheena said.

When we got to the park, it was packed with boys. To say it was a park, there were hardly children there, just boys, and a few girls, being flirts.

We walked over and sat next to a few boys on a bench smoking what smelled like weed.

“Aay, what’s happ’nanan!” one of the boys greeted.

“What’s up Zach.” Sheena and Manda greeted.

Manda went and sat on the boys lap.

“Damn, who the new girl is, Sheena?” another boy asked.

“This Latasha daughter…”
“Latasha daughter???? Man, I thought she was gon’ be a li’l baby or something, damn! Hey shawty, what your name is?” he asked.

“Sasha,” I answered.

“Sasha,” he repeated. “My name Frank, and this Charles.”
He pointed to a boy besides him.

“Nice to meet you all…”
“Girl, you proper like, what’s happ’nanan with that, you one of them preppy li’l broads, ain’t ya, huh shawty?” Frank asked.

“Excuse me?”

He was talking so fast, and I was thinking about how incorrect his grammar was, that I didn’t even here what he had said.

“Are you a prep star?” Sheena translated. Well at least tried to translate.

“I- I don’t understand…”
“Are you preppy? Stuck up, one of them proper ass white black rich girls?” Zach said.

“Excuse you!” I snapped.

“I’m just saying…”

“No, I’m not that way, at all….” I said.

“Well, then, you might as well get hood,” Frank added.

“What do you mean???”
“How long you here fo’ shawty?” he asked.

“Just the summer…”

“I give you about a week, and I bet you’ll never wanna leave.”

“Hey, you wanna spend the night at my house?” Sheena asked me out the blue.

“Sure,” I said.

I didn’t know why, considering the fact I just met her, but everyone seemed cool.

“Well it’s gon’ be you, me and Manda…”

“Say y’all, where L at?” Manda asked.

“He was with Doug…” Frank said.

“Never mind, there he go right there…”

“You know what? Fuck you! Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you! Bye!”

Before hanging up in someone’s face, a boy walked over here looking furious.

“That must’ve been Amber,” Sheena instigated.

“Yeah that was that b.i.” the boy said.

“What’s up L, homey?” Frank greeted.

“What’s up y’all.”

He walked around and dapped everybody off, and when he got in front of me, he just paused. So did I, because he was gorgeous.

“Damn, Shawty…. Mm, who you is????” he asked.

“Um- my- my name’s Sasha…”

“Goddamn you thick… Aay, you got a dude?” he asked.

I blushed…

“UM, no, I don’t, if that means boyfriend…”

“So, what you just moved here?” he asked.

“Um, no, I’m visiting. You know Latasha…”
“Yeah shawty, yo homey, she mad cool. Like a mother to the hood-”
“She’s my mother…”
His mouth dropped.

“What, you- you’re her daughter???? Damn, I imagined you to be a li’l shawty, a baby or something…”

“Well, to mama, you’re always a baby…”
“Well, my name is Lamar. But the hood call me L.”

“Okay L…”

“We should kick it sometimes-”
“Whoa. What about Amber?” Sheena butted in.

“Damn, shawty, why you cock blocking, though???”

“Because, you’re not about to play her!” Sheena yelled.

“Me and Amber just broke up…”
“Oh c’mon, and y’all always get it back on… Sasha aint gon’ be your rebound girl…”
“Whatever, Sheena. You always liked me your damn self; maybe that’s why you blocking a nigga action…”

“Whatever, Lamar, you’re a dog, a fucking dog!” Sheena yelled.

“Whatever Sheena…”

Lamar bought his attention back to me…

“Well, um, Sasha, it was nice to meet you… and uh, if you would consider kicking it with me, shawty, I’d love to bring you out sometime…”

He reached for my hand, then bought it up to his face and kissed it.

I just laughed because it was hilarious how he tried to be a complete gentleman after the way that Sheena just exposed him to me.

But I will not tell a lie. He had my attention.

Maybe I would come out of my shell sooner than I think…
