As we walked through the toy store playing with almost everything we could get our hands on, I realized that we only had 10 minutes to get back down to the first floor to meet the rest of the band. We jumped on the escalator and hoped that we wouldn’t be left behind. Of course, we were the last ones there, we always were. We were in Indianapolis, Indiana for the Bands of America Competition. It was our freshman year in high school and the first time I had been that far away from home without my parents. I was having the time of my life. I watched as Mr. Harris, our beloved band director, counted heads and chaperones did role call to make sure than no one was missing. Like always that took 20 minutes of my precious time, and then we loaded ourselves onto the 6 charter buses that it took to get us there.
We all thought we were going to get to go to our rooms at the Hampton Inn and relax for the rest of the night. We thought wrong. Mr. Harris said that we would all benefit from watching a few of the other bands perform before going back to the hotel. Fortunately for me this really was a learning experience since this was my first time being in the Indianapolis Colts Dome. Jessica, Tennille, Erin, and I had a seat at the very top of the bleachers and watched as Tarpon Springs High School band performed in the Preliminaries. When Tarpon Springs was through performing the girls and I got up, and went down to see what the vendors were selling.
