I stared at him for a moment. He hadn't knocked on the door or rang the bell. And as he continued to walk away, his slightly curly hair bouncing, I wondered more and more why he had come.
I flung open the door and hopped onto the porch.
"Lake!" I called loudly. That seriously had to be the fifteenth time I had done that/
As he turned around I could see he plainly was not returning my smile. His face wore even a more disappointed expression than it had the last time I'd seen him at the beach house.
He said nothing.
"Did you have something to say to me?" I continued. I wrapped my arms around my chest and stomach, to help keep them warm from the slight chill in the air and to help myself stand upright.
Lake took an angry step forward. "Yes I did," he told me. "I don't even know why, though."
"Why are you being this way?" I asked, quickly dropping my grin. "We didn't break up or fight or anything."
Lake wouldn't say anything, he just stood there, looking away from me indignantly.
"Well what?" I asked, louder this time. "How am I supposed to know what to fix if you don't let me know."
"You didn't say goodbye," Lake burst out.
"What?"
"You just left me like you didn't care. You know, just because vacation ended doesn't mean we have to end things. Our Dads are business partners- we live in the same city- it's not like we'd never see each other!"
"That's exactly it," I answered quietly. "I knew I didn't have to make a big dramatic goodbye because I'd probably see you in less than a week. I mean, what did you want me to do?"
Lake took another step towards me, only this one wasn't angry. It was tender, emotional, and intimidating.
"I wanted you to come and find me. I wanted you to wrap your arms around my neck and smile at me, then kiss me. I wanted to kiss your fingertips and rub the backs of your hands against my face. I wanted to stand in the driveway and just hug you, soaking you up." His voice was shaky. "You didn't even try to find me, did you? You couldn't at least give me a peck on the cheek and tell me 'I love you?'"
I bit my lip. "I-I-I," I stuttered. "I, umm, didn't have time."
"That old excuse," Lake breathed. "You had time. You couldn't have taken less than five minutes to spend time with me? As I remember, you spent the whole night before with me."
He sighed, shook his head. and started on his away again. I didn't know what to say- btu I had to do something. I couldn't let him leave.
I decided the best thing to do on days like these where the possibility of rain hung on the edge and so did the love of your life, the best thing to do was tell the truth.
"Please, wait!" I yelled.
Lake paused, but wouldn't face me. "Why?"
I ran down the porch steps to where Lake stood in the driveway, and put my arms around his neck. "Because I love you."
I smiled at him, and he smiled back, and then I kissed him. Then he kissed my fingertips, and rubbed the backs of my hands against his face. And there in the driveway we stood, just hugging each other, soaking each other up.
