He was the new kid.
He walked into class, and a chorus of giggles and snickers followed him and Mr. Archer, who lead him to the seat not far behind me.
"Class, this is Clarence," he announced.
Clarence has light red hair that was styled into gel-caked, pointy spikes. His glasses were too big for him and sat crooked on his narrow, bumpy nose. He wore a sweater vest and tapered jeans that only reached his ankles.
"How'd he end up here?" I heard Jack Thompson ask his best friend, Evan Dobley.
"I guess he got lost on the way to the dork convention," Evan replied.
Most of the class chuckled louder, but I rolled my eyes. It was a lame joke.
"Settle down, class," Mr. Archer began. "Turn to..."
I turned around and glanced at Clarence. He had sunk down in his seat, and looked as though he'd cry.
At lunch I saw Clarence sitting alone at a corner table. The group of girls I usually sat with were beckoning to me, but I decided I'd keep Clarence company.
"Hi," I said as I sat down across from him.
He looked up at me as though I were an angel. His face lit up and he actually smiled, revealing crooked teeth.
"I'm Laela."
"I'm-"
"I know who you are."
We sat in silence for a minute, then Clarence weezed, "Laela's a pretty name."
I smiled a thank you, and took to my lunch.
"Hey there!" Suddenly came a voice that sat down next to me. It was Russell, my boyfriend.
"Hi," I said back after giving him a peck on the cheek. I motioned to the other side of the table. "This is Clarence."
Me and Russell were in different classes.
"Hey, dude," Russell greeted in a friendly tone, holding his fist out for Clarence to pound. Clarence just stared at it.
I quickly pulled Russell's fist away.
"Clarence just started in my class."
Russell laughed. "Well, man, you take good care of my girl, a'right?"
"Okay," Clarence agreed. He stared straight at me.
