Finally Mother and Dad were getting out of the house.
Lake's parents were going to the boardwalk and my parents were going with them. Lake wasn't going for some unknown reason, and I told them I wanted to "stay home and relax." That's code for, "I want some time with your son, Mr. and Mrs. Emerson." Of course, Mother and Dad knew that, but I was sure Lake's parents were oblivious.
As soon as the adults were gone, I went on a hunt for Lake. The last time I saw him was after breakfast, and he was headed upstairs.
I made my own way up the carpeted staircase quietly but happily, thinking this would finally be it. Lake was mine.
I poked my head into his room. It was empty. As was the laundry room, the bathroom, and the guest room. As I was heading for my room, I noticed something on the door. It was a note.

Karli,

I'm not sure if you know this, but you need to: I love you. As I learn more and more about you every day, I realize how perfect you are for me. Everything about you is lovely, from the outside of you to the inside.
All I need to know right now is that you love me too. If you do, meet me on the beach at 11:30. If you don't come, I can take the hint.

All my love,

Lake.

I was so shocked I dropped the note. Everything I had ever dreamed of Lake saying he had wrote. He really did know me.
I glanced at the wall clock to my left. It was 11:27.
Happily, I rushed down the stairs and to the back porch. I could Lake standing on the ocean shore, staring over the water.
"Lake!"
He turned around, smiling. I smiled back at him and shook my head up and down. His grin grew bigger.
I ran excitedly down the stairs and into his outstretched arms, where he lifted my feet off the ground and gave me a languishing, affectionate, but tender kiss that showed his single-hearted love for me.
