 "Everyone presumed dead"

Those were the last words my radio received before all the stations turned to static. My knees got too weak to hold me up and I sat on the side of the bed. I felt my stomach turn upside down. Is this really happening? A small isolated island being attacked? Why the fuck would someone attack it? Who the fuck would want to attack it!?

Ok, I've got to calm down. Someone's bound to come and look for survivors, I mean they can't just assume everyone's dead and not even check for survivors. Even if everyone was dead they'd come for the bodies so they could get a proper burial. Come to think of it, no one on the radio said how we were attacked. Maybe they assume everyone's dead because the island was bombed to hell. But then why didn't I hear anything at night? And why is my house still standing? Well that may be because I live a few miles outside the city, but that dosen't mean I wouldn't of heard anything. Maybe they covered the island in some kind of poisonous gas. That would be quiet and kill alot of people fast.

One way or another someone will eventually come for survivors. I should head into town because their obviously going to start the search there. I should also get something to cover my mouth in cause there is some poisonous gas out there.

I grabbed a red checkered dish towel and slowly opened my front door. A cool breeze went through my house. I stepped out with the dish towel over my mouth. Everything felt the same, and it all looked the same too. No smoke coming from the direction of the town. I looked across the dirt road to my neighbors house. We were the only two people crazy enough to buy a house out in the middle of nowhere. I bought mine because it was cheap and had enough room for one person to live comfortably. He bought his to get away from the town and live alone. At first me and him never really talked, but after a year or so we became pretty good buddies.

That was over though...as I got to the road I saw him lying on his front door step. Blood was running down his face. I looked away quickly. I stood staring at the ground for a few minutes before I started walking for the town. I doubt waiting at the bus stop would work. A small laugh escaped my throat and was immediately followed by silence. This road is going to be a long and lonely one.
