"Come on! What are you waiting for?" Ashley Berg asked pointedly. Nadia didn't answer. They were alone in the hallway, in the middle of third period. No one was around to see them. The spray can was in Nadia's bag, but she felt frozen.
I tuned back in to Sasha. I thought for a second. It was mean...but... Ashley unlinked arms with me and walked over to a group of gilrs in the middle of it all. Nadia ran her fingers through her long dark hair and smiled at Ashley as she snickered. Adrian had gotten to her locker.
"I really don't feel comfortable doing this." Nadia told her for the second time.
"Look, to get into the Cherries, you have to go through initiation. Its no big deal. I did it not that long ago-"
"But Adrian doesn't dese-"
"Oh whatever!" Ashley turned on Nadia; her patience had run out. "I know how much you hate Adrian; you've told me yourself!" This was true, but before the fight Adrian was my best friend...
"...made up lies about you just to help themselves, and all you ever did was try to be their friend! And now your one chance to get revenge AND get into The Cherries, and you blow me off?!" She curled her lip. "We invited you into our group and to back out would be a very bad decision." She emphasized her last three words.
I pulled out the spray paint can and sprayed as fast as I could. S...L...U...T.
The bell rang and I shoved the can into my backpack and walked away with Ashley.
"Here's where the fun starts." She smiled wickedly as people filed out of the classrooms. The crowd of high schoolers slowly began to notice the locker.
"You know what? I heard that last year Adrian 'lost it' with the entire swim team!" Ashley tossed the rumor out like it was nothing. Nadia's eyes widened. What had I done? The other girls all gasped.
"I heard that too!" One of them said.
"Yeah, she's such a ho!" another one said. The girls broke off to tell their other friends.
"By the end of the day, everyone will know what Adrian is."
"Yeah." Nadia smiled weakly but her stomach was in knots. Ashley laughed.
"And now you're in the Cherries! See! That wasn't so hard!"
Suddenly, the hallway fell silent.
Ouch....
She gaped at the writing for a second. Then she rolled her eyes and walked away, but not before I saw a tear fall to the ground. Her pace quickened to a jog, until she had rounded the corner, far away from the crowd watching.
It was silent for a moment. Then everyone began to talk. Nadia felt awful, but the feeling lessened when Emily, Andi, and Shoshanna showed up.
"We heard what happened." Shoshanna said.
"That was awesome." Andi finished the thought.
Emily smiled.
"So are you ready to go shopping?" She said.
"For what?" Nadia queried.
"Your purse, smart one." She rolled her eyes, but they were all smiling.
My purse. Nadia took a deep breath and nodded, all my feelings of guilt put behind her.
