Chapter 5

Kittie lay on her stomach, flipping through a magazine and watching TV when Ethan finally stumbled into the room. It was already almost noon and when Ethan walked in, he still looked tired.

“Morning,” he mumbled, holding his head.

Kittie looked up. “Hey,” she greeted, “How do you feel?”

“Tired,” he yawned, “And my head hurts.”

Kittie sighed. “Sit,” she told him. “I’ll make you food. Does French toast sound good? We still have some hallah left.”

“Sure,” he said, plopping down on the couch.

Kittie brought him a glass of water and some Advil and walked into the kitchen to make Ethan something to eat. Kittie spent the rest of her weekend watching Ethan carefully, making sure he didn’t do anything to harm himself in any way. She knew he had a slight tendency to overreact.

On Monday afternoon, when Kittie got home, she heard Ethan talking to someone. She didn’t recognize the other voice. She dropped her keys on the kitchen counter and grabbed a bag of chips. She walked into the living room and saw Ethan and Kai sprawled on the couches with binders and paper surrounding them. Music was playing quietly in the background and Kai was partway through what seemed like a lengthy explanation when Kittie walked into the room.

Kittie stood in the entranceway and stated, “I didn’t see you after school today.”

“Oh, right,” Ethan said, looking up, “Kai drove us here.”

“Why?”

Kai looked at Kittie with a piercing look and said, “Ethan and I are lab partners. Got a problem with that?”

Kittie made a face, “I’m sorry, did I miss the memo? Do you hate me or something?”

“Oh, hate is such a strong word to use,” Kai said scornfully, “However true it may be.”

“Why? We’ve barely even met.”

“You’re always trying to be someone you’re not. You shouldn’t try to act like some perfect prep if that’s not who you are. People like you annoy the living hell out of me,” Kai said. She laughed at Kittie’s incredulous expression, “Don’t think I don’t notice these things. I know more than you think.”

Kittie stared at her with a shocked expression on her face. Her mood suddenly shifted to very annoyed and she hissed, “You don’t know anything about me. Don’t even start to think you know me at all.”

She stomped off to her room and slammed her door behind her. She had a feeling that she and Kai weren’t going to get along very well.

––––––

A few weeks had passed relatively uneventfully. Ethan was still somewhat depressed and was moping around the house all day. More than once, Kittie found him lounging in his room with a six pack of beer, just drinking away his sorrows. Luckily, he had stopped drinking before school. Strangely enough, the only days that he drank were the days Kai didn’t come over after school. On the days when Ethan and Kai were working together, he seemed slightly happier and Kittie couldn’t help but wonder why. Despite her slight jealousy, she eventually shrugged it off. It was the least of her concerns.

Her parents, though they weren’t fighting, weren’t even speaking anymore. They hadn’t said a word to each other for over a week now. Kittie hated how immaturely they were dealing with their problems, but didn’t have the courage to say anything.

Liana, while still slightly shaken, was pretty much back on her feet and her usual bubbly self. The only thing that was bugging Kittie right now was how much Caelan had been flirting with her recently. Kittie hated how much she was enjoying it. She cursed herself for being such a horrible friend. Kittie knew that if she was a better friend that she would’ve done something about it already. But she just couldn’t bring herself to it. She needed someone to love her in her life. And what Caelan was giving her was the closest she could get.

Kittie was just finishing up her makeup for the Winter Formal dance when she heard the doorbell ring.

“Ethan, can you get that? I’ll be down in a second,” Kittie called. She dusted her eyelids with some shimmering eye shadow and skipped out of her bathroom to grab her purse. She took her wallet out of her backpack and stuffed it in her purse before heading down the stairs. She saw Liana and Caelan waiting by the door.

She waved to them, “Hey, guys. Sorry I took so long.”

Liana smiled, “No big deal. Come on! Let’s go!”

Kittie giggled and slipped on her heels. She grabbed her keys and got into her car. She followed Caelan’s car to school and when they got there, the dance was already in full swing. The thumping bass of the music could be heard from blocks away. Kittie parked her car and walked into the dance with Liana, Caelan, and Ethan to pay for her ticket.

When they got into the gym, Kittie gasped. The spirit committee really went all-out this time. The entire gym was decked out to look like the night scene in Hollywood. Gold stars were scattered all over the floor and each one had a student’s name on it. Colorful lights gave the room a rainbow glow and they sparkled off of silver stars that were taped to the walls and hung from the ceiling. Different colored streamers were draped across the ceiling. The music suddenly shifted and Kittie recognized hers and Liana’s favorite song. The two squealed and ran out to dance.

Kittie laughed as she danced to the beat of the music. This was the most fun she’d had in a long time. The dance was to last until midnight, and at around eleven-twenty, Ethan left with Kai. It bugged Kittie more than it should. Somehow, she couldn’t stand how close they were getting. It felt like Kai was stealing her twin brother away from her.

Liana was the next to leave at about eleven-forty-five. Caelan drove her home, and after they left, Kittie felt unbearably alone. She walked out of the school’s gym and into the cold nighttime air. She fumbled with the shiny gold star that was hanging from a ribbon around her neck. She and Liana had found their stars together and had worn them around their necks all night. Kittie sighed and walked to her car, driving silently home.

On the short ride home, Kittie allowed her thoughts to drift. Her heart was aching. She didn’t know how much more suffering she could take. Even when she should be happy, she was miserable. Maybe she was depressed. Or maybe she was just lonely. It felt like everyone around her had found someone to lean on and she was the only one left standing alone.

When she arrived home and walked inside, she walked to her room, trying to block out the sound of her parent’s harsh murmurs that seeped through the walls of their room. They were fighting again. Kittie sighed as she walked into her room. She walked over to her mini fridge to pull out a bottle of beer. Although she was generally against drinking like this, after drinking just half of the bottle, she felt better. She finished off the bottle and grabbed a second bottle, taking her house keys with her and walking out the front door. She knew that it probably wasn’t a good idea to go on a walk this late at night, especially alone, but she had the unshakeable urge to move. She wandered through the streets, lost in thought. She shivered as the cold air blew against her bare arms and legs. She wished she had changed into something warmer than her dress when she had gotten home, or at least thought to bring a coat. Kittie took another sip of beer and looked around her, realizing where her subconscious had taken her.

“Kittie?” someone called out into the night.

Kittie turned around and saw, as she anticipated, Caelan standing in the doorway of his house. Kittie waved slightly.

“Hey,” she greeted.

“Do you want to come inside? It’s freezing out,” he called softly to her.

Kittie hesitated and he saw this, so he prompted, “Please? I want to talk.”

“I guess,” she finally said, walking towards the door. She had a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. She had the feeling something was going to go horribly wrong.

He led her inside and into the front room of the house. He sat down on a comfy couch and looked at his hands, then around the room, and but not at Kittie.

“Where are your parents?” Kittie asked out of curiosity.

“Oh,” Caelan said, still not making eye contact. “They’re out of town for the weekend. You know, business stuff.”

Kittie nodded and took another long sip of beer before setting the bottle down on the coffee table. Caelan finally looked at Kittie and studied her face carefully.

“Kittie, I have something to tell you,” he told her.

“What?”

He took her hand in his lightly, and Kittie felt her pulse quicken as he did this. He looked deep into Kittie’s blue eyes.

“I,” he said, hesitating slightly, “I love you, Kittie.”

Kittie’s mouth fell open. She felt immensely joyful and guilty all at the same time. She couldn’t think of a single thing to say. Before she had a chance to think at all, Caelan cupped her face in his hands and pulled her close to him, kissing her passionately. Kittie stiffened in surprise, but instinctively melted into his hold, kissing back fiercely. She felt Caelan’s hand sliding up the bottom of her dress. Then, suddenly, Kittie’s conscience caught up with her. She put her hands against Caelan’s chest and pushed herself away from him.

She looked at him, breathing slightly heavily, and protested, “I can’t do this, Caelan. Liana’s my best friend. This is so wrong.”

She started to get up, but Caelan caught her arm and assured her, “Liana doesn’t have to know. It’ll be our little secret.”

Kittie looked at him disbelievingly, but he kissed her again and she could feel her will weakening. Caelan kissed her neck and whispered in her ear, “Come on, Kittie, you know you want to.”

And he was right. She did want this. She wanted this more than anything at the moment, and her slightly intoxicated mind wasn’t quite capable of logical judgment. So she gave in. She let him have his way. She let him bring her upstairs to his room. And that night, she slept with her best friend’s boyfriend.
