Chapter 18

Chantal screamed as the car flew through the air. She felt Cedric’s protective arms secure around her and she watched in shock as he tore through the metal of the car. He leaped up into the night air, shielding Chantal as much as he could. Still, glass and metal shards tore at Chantal’s skin, leaving thin red trails of blood on her skin. He landed softly and set her down, crouching protectively in front of her and growling under his breath. Chantal found herself backed up against the wall of a tall warehouse-like building. Anavive was standing on the pile of remains of the car in a wild, animalistic stance, her teeth bared. She was snarling viciously at the three approaching figures. Chantal had never been more scared in her life. Fear shocked every inch of Chantal’s body, making it hard to breathe.

Naturally, Joseph was the first to step out of the darkness and into the illumination of the street lamp. His eyes were now completely the soulless, hollow black color of a thirsty vampire and he was grinning widely, his teeth sparkling in the light. The other two were close behind him and they sprinted past him at Anavive and Cedric. Anavive growled louder than before and threw herself at Clara. It was quickly evident that Anavive was much stronger than Clara was and Anavive had the advantage that her gift gave her. Chantal had no doubt that Anavive would win her fight.

Andrew leaped up into the air and attempted to strike Cedric, but Cedric clawed his chest, sending him flying backwards. Andrew crashed into the street lamp, leaving a large dent in the pole. Andrew wasn’t fazed and got right back up, walking slowly towards Cedric, as if planning carefully what he was going to do. Then, all too quickly for Chantal to comprehend, the two were fighting to the death. She felt her breath catch in her throat. What if Cedric got hurt? What if he got killed? She couldn’t bear to live without him. She watched in horror as the two fought, quickly darting in and out of the darkness. The sounds of growls filled the air, only to be pierced by a strange screeching sound and a loud wail. Chantal tried to look in the direction of the noise, but all she could make out was the outline of a bumpy pale pile and the spark of a flame from a lighter. She realized in sudden shock that the pile was whatever remained of Clara now that Anavive was finished with her. Soon, the pile burst into flame, sending strange, sickly sweet blue-black smoke drifting into the air.

“Hello, precious,” a voice whispered in Chantal’s ear, startling her. She had been so caught up in what Cedric and Anavive were doing, she had forgotten that she was now completely unprotected.

Joseph stood directly beside her, grinning at her menacingly. Chantal’s heart began to pound in her chest and a surge of adrenaline pulsed through her veins. And, although she knew there was no way she could escape him, she ran. She ran through the door of the abandoned warehouse and through the dimly lit room. Before she got even a few yards into the room, something caught her arm. Her momentum sent her crashing into Joseph’s marble chest. She looked up at him, frightened.

He gripped her wrist tightly and said, “Now, now, Chantal, that wasn’t very smart. You should know better than to run from a vampire.”

Chantal trembled in fear and Joseph cackled loudly, throwing her back onto the hard ground. She fell back on the cement with a loud crash far too fast for her to catch herself. Her right arm scraped against something cold and hard, leaving blood flowing down her arm. She looked beside her and saw a metal pipe. As Joseph leaped at her again, she instinctively reached out to grab the pipe and swung as hard as she could at him. The pole collided with his body with a sound that sounded like nails on a chalkboard, and although he staggered back a couple of steps, Joseph was unharmed. And Chantal now had no weapon.

She picked herself up and ran towards the nearest exit in a hopeless attempt to get away. Something hit the backs of Chantal’s knees, making them buckle beneath her, and she fell to the ground, landing on her arms. One of her arms twisted and a loud crack rang through the air. A second later, Chantal felt a sharp pain run up her arm and the warm sensation of blood flowing freely from the open wound. She cried out as Joseph picked her up by the collar of her shirt and brought her close to his face. He smiled wickedly and threw her back against one of the metal poles supporting the warehouse. Her head knocked back against the metal and more blood seeped from her body from the new gash on her head.

Chantal blinked and struggled to keep her eyes open, growing dizzy from blood loss. She fell to the ground only to be dragged her up to her feet by Joseph’s tight grip on her broken arm. Chantal yelped at the searing pain that this sent through her. Joseph looked at her with hungry eyes. She knew that she wouldn’t be alive for much longer. Joseph was too thirsty to resist the temptation of all of the spilt blood.

She vaguely registered a shrieking sound from outside, and a wave of horridly suffocating smoke wafted through the warehouse; the smell of a vampire burning. Chantal hoped this meant that Cedric had won his fight. She hoped with all of her heart that if she didn’t survive this at least Cedric would.

The quiet scuffling of feet echoed on the ground for a split second before Joseph was yanked off of her and thrown off towards the opposite end of the warehouse. Chantal collapsed and clutched her arm in pain. She winced as she struggled keep her eyes open. She saw through her now hazy vision two pale figures being thrown off by the third and that third figure looked wildly at Chantal, who was collapsed on the ground, almost unable to move. She scrambled to get away from Joseph, who was, once again, approaching her with the promise of death.

Chantal felt a pressure on her back before a loud snap echoed through the hollow building. Another wave of pain shot through her body, this time worse than ever. She was unable to move the lower half of her body. He had broken her spine. She looked up at him with fear in her eyes, almost wishing that he would just kill her so she wouldn’t have to suffer anymore. He grinned, his white teeth gleaming in the dim light. He pounced on her and, by some remaining instinct, she held up her arm to shield her face.

And that was the last conscious decision she made. She felt blackness surround her and drag her down, finally relieving her of this horrible pain.

–Cedric–

Cedric shook off the stinging that Joseph’s venom left behind from when he had bitten Cedric and thrown him at the wall of the warehouse. He heard, all to clear, the hideous crack of Chantal’s spine snapping and raced to save her. He made it just in time. He grabbed Joseph by the back of his shirt and threw him off of Chantal. Cedric growled threateningly at him. Cedric crouched down and waited patiently for the right moment. He sprang at Joseph at the same moment Anavive, who was behind him did, and together, the two of them finished him off. All that remained of him was a pile of burning embers.

Cedric rushed to Chantal’s side, picking her up as gently as he could. Her skin was close to blue from blood loss and her breaths were short and shallow. He could feel his chest tighten and fought the urge to cry.

He felt a hand on his shoulder, and when he looked up, he saw Anavive standing over him with an impassive look on her face. Only her eyes reflected the tiniest bit of sympathy and encouragement she offered.

“Cedric,” she said softly, “You know what you have to do.”

“No,” he protested, “I can’t.”

“You have to,” Anavive insisted gently, “she’ll never make it any other way. There’s no way an ambulance would get here in time. She’s already lost too much blood.”

Cedric looked at her with anguish in his eyes. He looked down at the girl he loved and watched in mute horror as the life drained out of her limp body.

“Chantal!”
