Chapter 4

“Ethan!” Kittie shouted, “Wait up!”

It was finally the end of the day, and, since it was Friday, Kittie was going to have a girl’s night out with Liana. Ethan turned to face Kittie and waved.

“What’s up?” he greeted.

“Well, I’m going out with Liana,” she explained, “So I can’t give you a ride home today.”

“No biggie,” Ethan said, patting her head playfully, “I’ll get a ride home from a friend. You have fun.”

Kittie smiled, “Thanks, Ethan, we will.”

She hugged her brother goodbye and ran to the parking lot to catch up with Liana, who leaning against the hood of Kittie’s car. When Liana saw Kittie running up, she got off of the car and waved eagerly. Kittie waved back and unlocked her car.

“Hey, sorry I took so long,” Kittie apologized, “I couldn’t find Ethan.”

“No big deal. Now come on! Let’s get going,” Liana giggled.

Kittie smiled. It was good that Liana was laughing again. Kittie had been getting worried about her bubbly friend. Kittie drove the two of them to the mall so they could get dinner and go shopping for a few hours. The whole way, the radio was playing and they sang along, quite poorly, with the songs, laughing the entire way. Since they got to the mall far too early for dinner, they walked around from store to store trying on random things. They tried on hideous clashing things just so they could take pictures and laugh about it. They both decided to get new dresses since the annual Winter Formal dance was coming up in a few weeks.

Kittie and Liana tried on various different dresses before finally deciding what dresses they would wear. Kittie chose an emerald spaghetti strap dress that had a plunging neckline. It came down to just above her knees and flattered her skin tone and hair color. Liana picked out a deep purple Grecian style dress. It had halter straps and came to slightly below her knees. The two found matching shoes, and by the time seven-thirty rolled around, they were headed out to get dinner.

“So, what do you want to eat?” Liana said, looking out the window for a good restaurant.

“How about Chinese?” suggested Kittie, pulling up in front of their favorite Chinese restaurant.

“Sounds good,” Liana said cheerily. She stepped out of the car and skipped ahead towards the Chinese restaurant. Kittie giggled and ran after her friend. The two entered the cozy, family-run restaurant in high spirits. The two ate their dinner while gossiping and having a good time. By the end of the night, Kittie’s cheeks hurt from laughing so much. She hadn’t laughed for real in a long time.

“Bye,” she called to her friend, “See you on Monday.”

Liana waved back, “See you.”

Kittie drove the quick fifteen minutes back to her own house and walked into the house through the garage door. She paused in the doorway, surprised by how quiet the house was. Usually, Ethan would be playing video games or something similar and making a racket.

Kittie knit her eyebrows and called, “Ethan? You here?”

When she got no response, Kittie walked cautiously into the house. As she walked through room after empty room, she got more and more nervous. Finally, after she had walked through the entire house, the only place left to look was the back yard. It was already getting dark, so Kittie saw no reason for Ethan to be in the back yard, but she decided to look anyways. There was no harm in checking.

As Kittie neared the sliding door that lead to their back yard, her heart began to pound in her chest, as if it knew what was coming before she did. She stepped out into the dim evening light, her eyes scanning the lawn for any sign of Ethan. She thought she saw a dim figure under one of the tall trees, but she wasn’t quite sure. She flicked on the light that illuminated most of the yard and allowed her to see clearly. Her eyes widened in shock. She rushed over to Ethan’s body, which was collapsed on the ground.

“Ethan!” she shouted, sitting him up against the tree and shaking him to wake him up. “Ethan, are you okay?”

“Mrrff,” he mumbled, his eyelids fluttering slightly. He ever so slowly opened his eyes, but his eyelids drooped and he looked like he was about to pass out again.

“What are you doing out here?” she demanded.

He slowly held up a glass bottle in his hand. Kittie snatched the bottle from him and read the label. She made a face.

“Ethan!” she cried, “You think drinking is going to make your problems go away?”

“Well, I feel better now,” he slurred.

“Right, tell me that when you’re puking your guts out,” Kittie sighed. “Come on, you have to get inside.”

She helped her brother up and helped him stagger to the door. She led him up the stairs and to his bed. She lay him down and sighed, putting her hands on her hips.

“Now I want you to sleep. And don’t you dare touch any of the alcohol in the house,” she told him.

“Yes mother,” his words ran together. He started cackling wildly.

Kittie sighed, “You’re just lucky mom and dad aren’t home right now.”

Ethan didn’t reply. He just kept laughing crazily, not listening to a word Kitty said.

“Good night!” Kittie called before stomping out of his room.

She slammed his door shut and walked to her own room. She immediately blasted music from her iPod, trying to drown out all thoughts. The pulsing beats of her music helped to calm her pounding heart and wipe all thoughts out of her mind. And, although it was far too early to be going to bed, she quickly fell asleep. The events of the day had completely exhausted her.
