 Chapter 17

Chantal opened her eyes and sat up groggily. She rubbed her puffy eyes and looked around herself. She found herself in an unfamiliar car. And when she looked outside, she couldn’t recognize where she was. She yawned and stretched and tried to recall how she had gotten here.

She had been awake for many hours even after she finished crying. She had read Cedric’s letter over and over again, memorizing every word. After she had finally fallen asleep in the car from the Hales’ house, she vaguely remembered being carried out of the car some time later. She had been placed in the back seat of another car before they were off again. She remembered falling asleep again almost immediately. She stretched out her aching body and pulled out the letter again, tracing her finger over the perfect, elegant script. The paper already had creases worn into its surface from the many times she had unfolded then refolded it again.

Anavive looked at Chantal over her shoulder. “You look like you could use some more sleep,” she noted.

Chantal looked up at Anavive, “Not going to happen. Where are we?”

“We’ll be in Chicago in half an hour,” Anavive said, “We’ve been on the road for less than twenty-four hours. The other car ran out of gas, so I took this one. I spotted this car just as I was running out of gas and, since it would take far too long to get gas, I just took this car.”

“Of course,” Chantal said sarcastically, “because when my car runs out of gas, the first thing I think to do is steal some stranger’s car.”

“Oh, hush,” Anavive said, “you know how fast vampires are. Even a second gives them more time to find us and track us down.”

“Whatever,” Chantal mumbled under her breath. She leaned her head against the window and watched the scenery blur by. She was still trying to wrap her head around the idea that they had made a three or four day trip in less than one. She was also shocked that they hadn’t been pulled over by any police officers yet. They had to be going at least twice the speed limit.

Chantal must’ve nodded off because the next thing she knew, Anavive was gently shaking her awake. Anavive had Chantal’s duffel bag on her shoulder and was parked in front of a plain looking hotel.

“Come on, Chantal,” Anavive told her, “I got us a room.”

Chantal blinked a few times and stepped out of the car, stretching her stiff arms and legs as she walked. She followed Anavive to a suite on one of the top floors of the hotel. Anavive set down Chantal’s duffel bag in the bedroom and walked to the main room. She turned on the TV and sat in a green-and-gold striped arm chair. Chantal sighed and plopped down on the couch that was made of the same fabric. Chantal turned her head to the side to look at Anavive, who was sitting quite motionlessly.

Anavive’s eyes moved to look at her, but otherwise she sat perfectly still, “Are you hungry?”

Chantal’s stomach growled loudly, and she smiled weakly, “Sure.”

Anavive nodded and walked over to the phone and called room service. A few minutes later, the food arrived and Chantal ate it without tasting it. She looked at Anavive, who was, once again, sitting absolutely motionlessly.

Anavive turned to face her, “Yes?”

“What are we going to do here?”

“We’ll wait,” Anavive explained. “Hopefully the others will be able to stop Joseph and his coven in Oregon, though I doubt it. It sounded pretty serious when we left. If they can’t stop Joseph’s coven, then someone will call us.”

Chantal nodded and thought for a bit. She asked, “So how exactly do you stop vampires?”

“Well,” Anavive said, “Worst case scenario is by killing them. On the other hand, if they’re relatively civilized, then talking, or rather shouting I imagine, it out will suffice; even though there may be a bit of tension. I doubt they’re going to be persuaded out of it though. They all looked quite thirsty, and nomads like them generally can’t control themselves as well as we can.”

Chantal was silent as she thought that over. She continued eating morosely. She couldn’t help but feel that she was responsible for all of this; that if someone died in the attempt to save her, it wouldn’t be worth it.

“You are worth it, Chantal,” Anavive said, as if reading her thoughts. Anavive’s eyes didn’t leave the TV screen. “No matter what you tell yourself, know that you are worth it, and we’ll do everything we can to keep you safe.”

Quite a few days passed uneventfully. Everyday, the TV stayed on, though Chantal didn’t watch it. And she suspected that, although Anavive sat staring at the screen the entire day, she wasn’t very interested in it either. Everyday, at regular intervals, food was brought to the room and Chantal ate it silently, her anxiety growing worse. She cried herself to sleep every day and feared the time when sleep surrounded her. Her dreams were filled with frightening images of the thirsty vampires. She often tossed and turned and awoke feeling tired.

She needed something to distract her. She searched her brain for a question she could ask Anavive and finally remembered one.

Chantal asked, “How did you become a vampire?”

Anavive sighed, “Cedric didn’t tell you?”

“He told me you fell off of a building,” Chantal said.

Anavive smiled slightly, “Close. I jumped.”

“What?!”

Anavive waved her hand to get Chantal to be quiet, “Look, it’s not as terrible as you think. As a human I had something of a genetic defect. I couldn’t feel pain. So, since I came from a quite poor family, I became a street performer to earn more money for my family. Since I couldn’t feel any pain, I would often walk over hot coals or stab my arms with knives. I wouldn’t feel a thing and I didn’t understand what pain was. Because of my help, my family was able to survive, though my parents were very worried about my safety. And they were right to be worried. When I turned nineteen, I performed the most daring stunt ever. At the time, I had developed a theory that if something didn’t hurt, then it didn’t harm me. So, when I jumped off of a building and landed on the ground and didn’t feel a thing, I didn’t realize just how serious the situation was. But luckily, a bystander did. That person was Scarlett. She had watched me jump and immediately rushed to my side. She told everyone that she knew me and was going to take me to the hospital. Instead, she took me to Eleanor, who knew that the only way to save me was to change me. And so, I became one of them.”

Chantal looked at Anavive in shock. She never imagined anything like that.

Anavive smirked, “Shocking, I know.”

Chantal nodded, her mouth hanging open. Anavive laughed for the first time in Chantal’s presence. Chantal was surprised at how light and buoyant Anavive’s laugh was. She never imagined for such a bitter person to have such a musical laugh. Just then, the Anavive’s red cell phone buzzed, and it was at her ear before it finished ringing once.

“Hello?” Anavive greeted, “Oh, hello Eleanor. What’s new?”

Anavive was silent for several moments and said, “I see. Yes, of course. Bye.”

She snapped the phone shut and sighed. Chantal looked at her and asked, “What’s going on?”

“They lost Joseph’s coven. Scarlett, and Elliott are watching your parents and Caleb and Eleanor are keeping their eyes open for any sign of them,” Anavive explained. “Cedric’s on his way though. He lands in about four hours.”

Chantal’s spirits lifted when she heard this. It felt like forever since she had last seen him. Her anxiety melted away and was now replaced by impatience. She couldn’t wait for four hours to be over. She was now jittery and couldn’t sit still. She paced around the hotel room with a big smile on her face. She straightened out this thing and that, trying to kill some time. If any of this got to Anavive at all, she did a very good job at hiding this, because she still didn’t move for upwards of three hours. Finally, with only about half an hour until Cedric’s plane landed, Anavive got up and slipped on her black trench coat. She slipped her phone into her coat pocket and grabbed the keys to the stolen car.

“Come on, Chantal,” she said, “We need to get going.”

Chantal jumped up from where she was and slipped on her shoes. She giddily followed Anavive out the door and to the car. They quickly sped to the airport and waited for Cedric’s plane to arrive. To Chantal, the wait felt like forever, though it was only about ten or fifteen minutes. Suddenly, Anavive’s face lighted up and she waved to someone in the crowd. Chantal followed Anavive’s gaze and gasped in joy. Cedric was walking towards them with a smile on his face. Chantal ran up to him and threw her arms around him. He laughed and hugged her back, picking her a foot off the ground. Chantal giggled in a carefree way. Anavive hung back and watched them with an envious look in her eyes. She turned on her heel and walked out of the airport to wait in the car.

Cedric kissed Chantal lovingly and Chantal leaned her head on his chest.

“I missed you so much,” she told him, “I thought I’d never see you again.”

He smiled at her and whispered, “I told you I would never let anything happen to you.”

Chantal smiled back up at him, feeling happy for the first time in over a week. Cedric took Chantal’s hand and led her through the crowds of people in the airport, following Anavive’s scent. He easily found Anavive standing by her stolen silver car. Anavive spotted them, got in, and started the car. Cedric held the door open for Chantal and sat in the back seat with her. Chantal cuddled up against him, wrapping her arms around his waist. She closed her eyes and felt much needed sleep finally settle peacefully on her.

Suddenly, she felt the car jolt to a stop and screech around before shooting off in a new direction. Anavive hissed noticeably in warning. Chantal’s eyes popped open. Chantal tried to sit up, but Cedric’s arms were rigid around her body. So she settled for just tilting her head up to look out the window on the side of the car that Cedric was sitting in. She looked out into the quiet darkness and caught a glimpse of a flash of white. Before Chantal could react, something hard crashed into the car. The car flipped over and the sound of metal screeching against asphalt filled the air.
