Chapter 16
“What’s going on?” Chantal whispered. “Why are you helping me? You hate me.”
Anavive sighed, “I don’t hate you, Chantal, I was jealous. I still am, but I’m trying to be good, for Cedric’s sake. Everyone always tells me how lonely Cedric was, though I haven’t been aware enough nor alive for long enough to really know. But, I do know that it would be a terrible thing if we had to see the look on his face if we lost you.”
“So are we friends?” asked Chantal, not expecting her to say yes.
“Somewhat,” Anavive replied shortly, “Now, hush. They’ll hear you.”
Chantal clamped her mouth shut and stared out the dark window at the garage walls. She waited anxiously, chewing on the inside of her cheek. She hated not knowing what was going on.
–Cedric–
As soon as Elliott pulled the door shut, Cedric felt a sharp pull in his chest. He took a deep breath and walked over to the door. He pulled the door open to reveal the three vampires, Joseph, Andrew, and Clara. They looked just as he remembered.
Joseph was the tallest of the three of them, and his skin seemed slightly olive under its pale tone. His hair was jet black and he stood with authority. He was obviously the leader of the coven. Andrew was standing slightly behind him and to his right. He was by far the palest of all of them and his hair was long and platinum blonde. Clara, Andrew’s mate, was standing to his left, her stance the most wild of all of them. Her hair was a dirty blonde tangled mess. All of their eyes were a fierce shade of crimson and their lips were dark blood red.
Cedric forced a smile, “Hello Joseph, Andrew, Clara, it’s been such a long time.”
“So it has,” Joseph replied pleasantly. “Can we come in?”
“Of course,” Cedric said, carefully leading them in. He was completely aware of how potently the room still smelled of Chantal. He nervously watched them walk into the room.
Eleanor got up from the couch where she had been sitting and greeted the visitors, “Hello, I’m Eleanor. It’s very nice to meet you. May I ask where you are headed to?”
Joseph smiled and straightened out of his guarded stance. The others followed. Joseph replied easily, his eyes darting around the room, “We’re not really headed anywhere in particular, but we were passing through the area and we heard that you were situated here in something of a permanent residence. As you can imagine, that’s quite an intriguing idea to nomads like us. So, naturally, we were curious and decided to pay our old friend Cedric a visit.”
“I see,” Eleanor said warmly, “Why don’t you have a seat, and we can discuss our rather unique way of life. And I would be very interested in your stories, as well.”
“Of course,” Andrew said after Joseph was silent for a half a second.
He and Clara sat down on one of the cream colored couches. Joseph, however, stood, frozen in the spot where he stood. Right at that moment, Cedric realized just how deep black Joseph’s eyes were. They had just the slightest bit of red showing on the edges. Joseph took a deep breath, his nostrils flaring. His head turned in the direction of the garage door. He instinctively took a few quick steps towards the door. Cedric leaped between Joseph and the door, baring his teeth and growling loudly.
Joseph smirked, “What’s wrong, Cedric? She’s just a human.”
Cedric narrowed his eyes and hissed, “She is not ‘just a human!’ She’s practically the meaning of my existence!”
–Chantal–
Chantal waited for what seemed like forever, but in reality it had only been a minute or two. Chantal’s heart was pounding with nervousness. She was anxious to find out what was going on inside the house. Suddenly, a loud snarl made her jump.
Anavive gasped, “Cedric!”
“What happened?” Chantal whispered frantically.
“Change of plans,” Anavive explained quickly as the garage opened silently. “We’ve got to leave now.”
Anavive backed out of the garage and sped away from the house. Just before they left, Chantal thought she could see Scarlett and Elliott running into the garage from outside. She could swear she saw a few other pale figures leap out into the dim evening light. She thought she heard the revving of an engine, but then the all of the outside noises faded and she wasn’t quite sure of anything. Faster than Chantal thought was possible, they were speeding down a dirt road in the forest. Chantal took a few deep breaths to steady her thumping heart, but before she knew it, she was hyperventilating. Anavive looked over her shoulder at Chantal.
“Chantal, don’t freak out,” she said as comfortingly as she could under the circumstances. “I know you’re worried, but I can assure you that Cedric is perfectly capable of taking care of himself.”
Chantal nodded. Although she felt slightly better, she couldn’t help the worried tears that were now streaming down her cheeks. The stresses of the past ten hours had finally caught up to her, and now it felt like she would never stop crying.
Anavive looked at her worriedly. She patted Chantal’s knee softly. She reached into her pocket and, a second later, was holding a folded piece of white stationary out to Chantal.
“Here,” Anavive told her, “Cedric wanted me to give you this.”
Chantal sniffed and wiped her cheeks. She took the paper with shaking hands and unfolded it. More tears started flowing down her cheeks as she saw Cedric’s familiar, perfect handwriting.

It took Chantal longer than it should have to read the letter. It was hard to see through the tears clouding her eyes. When she finally read what it said, she was crying harder than ever. She wasn’t sure how she was going to survive this insane fleeing attempt. Anavive eyed her with a strained expression on her face, but said nothing. Chantal sobbed, hugging the letter close to her chest. It was all she had of Cedric now. It was all she could cling on to. She lay across the back seat curled up into a small ball crying into her sleeve. And she kept crying until she ran out of tears and then she fell asleep many, many hours later.
