Chapter 15

As Elliott spoke, life seemed to return back to Cedric’s eyes and he loosened his tight grip on Chantal’s hand. He put his arm around her waist and kissed the top of her head.

“They’re… old friends of mine,” he explained. Chantal noticed the way he paused before he said the word “friends.” He continued, “I suppose they want to see me again. I haven’t seen them in ages.”

“They’ll be here in about two days,” Scarlett said, continuing Cedric’s train of thought, “at the most. But you don’t have to worry about anything, Chantal. We won’t let anything happen to you.”

“But Elliott just said they heard about me. And how do you know for sure anyways? What if they don’t come?”

“If they decide not to come then Trinity, Soleil, or Addisyn will call us to notify us of the change. These three are old friends of ours, and like us, Addisyn has a gift. She can see things that will happen in the future, though it is subject to change. If they decide not to come, which is highly unlikely, then Addisyn will see that and we will know,” Cedric said, his voice so fast it was barely decipherable.

Chantal looked at each one of them with a worried expression on her face. Scarlett patted her shoulder comfortingly, “Look, Addie’s been alive for longer than you can imagine. She’s really good at this. And trust me, she doesn’t see you dying anytime soon.”

Scarlett smiled again and skipped through the doors of the school, calling over her shoulder, “I’m going to go tell Annie!”

She sprinted off and out of sight. Chantal sighed and bit her lip. Elliott looked at her meaningfully.

“Seriously, Chantal, nothing bad is going to happen,” he assured her before sauntering off into the building.

Cedric wrapped his arms around her waist and whispered in her ear, “If it makes you feel better, I’ll stay with you tonight. I’m not letting you out of my sight today.”

She smiled, leaning back against him, and asked, “Are you sure things will be okay?”

“Yes,” he said confidently, “I’ll never let anything happen to you. I promise.”

Chantal smiled wider and turned around and kissed him just as the bell rang. He immediately pulled away and looked at her with his piercing eyes, “I’ll see you later.”

Before Chantal could react, he was walking through the doors of the building. Chantal walked to her first class, math, in a happy daze. When she sat down at her seat, someone tapped her on her shoulder, bringing her out of her trance. She turned her head and saw Tori looking at her expectantly.

Chantal smiled and said, “Good morning, Tori,” completely aware of how little they had talked in the past few weeks.

“Hey,” Tori returned her smile, “So are you and Cedric going out?”

“Um, yeah, I guess,” Chantal said, caught slightly off guard by Tori’s seemingly random question. “Why?”

“Oh, just wondering,” Tori said as she turned to pull her binder out of her backpack. “Everyone’s talking about it. It’s like the huge thing right now.”

Chantal smiled at Tori, but didn’t say anything more as the teacher walked into the room. The morning passed quickly and before she knew it, it was lunch, and she was sliding her tray along the silver countertop, picking up a box of spicy tuna rolls and a bottle of Vitamin Water. She made her way to the familiar table where Scarlett and Elliott sat. Scarlett was already chattering away as usual when Chantal sat down and greeted both of them.

“Hey guys,” she said, “Anything new?”

Scarlett abruptly stopped talking, and turned to face Chantal, a measuring look on her face. She was still deliberating whether to tell Chantal something when Cedric sat down at the table a second later. Cedric shot Scarlett a warning glance that even Chantal noticed, but Scarlett ignored him.

“Would you believe it,” Scarlett said carefully, “if I told you that we should be expecting them by nightfall?”

“What?!” Chantal exclaimed, her heart beginning to pound in her chest. She was sure the others heard it because Cedric took her hand in his and Scarlett and Elliott looked at her sympathetically.

“They decided to skip hunting outside of Seattle to make it here quicker,” Scarlett explained. “We’ll need to get you out of here by then.”

“Why?”

“If you had any idea how appealing you are to us then you would understand,” Cedric sighed. “You’re not just tempting to me, you know. Even though I’m drawn to you more than others, you still smell irresistibly delicious to others, and if they pick up on that, then there may be no way to stop them.”

“I think we’re going to have to steal you, Chantal,” Scarlett stated, “We have to put you on a plane going far away from here.”

“I’ll take her,” Cedric offered.

“No,” Chantal insisted. When Cedric gave her a dubious look, she explained, “You can’t. They’d expect both of us to go together, so they’d know to look for you.”

Cedric’s eyes narrowed stubbornly, but Elliott intervened, “She has a point, Cedric. It would be better if Scarlett and I took her.”

“So it’s settled,” Scarlett said before Cedric could get a word in, “After school today, Elliott and I will take her in her car to her house. She’ll have some time to gather a few things before we take her to our house. When we’re there, we’ll have to sort out a few things, like where we’ll be going and what our excuses for being away are. After that, we’ll leave. Agreed?”

Chantal and Elliott both nodded willingly enough; Chantal only hesitated slightly, not liking the fact that she would have to leave Cedric for any period of time. Cedric sighed and eyed Chantal with a pained look. He brushed his hand on her cheekbone and looked into her eyes.

“Agreed.”

–––

“Hurry!” hissed Scarlett through the open window. “Your housekeeper will be in here soon. You have three minutes.”

Chantal gathered another armful of things from her closet and dumped them into her duffle bag. Scarlett sighed and leaped gracefully through the window to help Chantal pack. With Scarlett’s help, within a minute, Chantal was ready to go. She took one last look around her room, knowing that this could possibly be the last time she saw it.

She braced herself as Scarlett scooped her up easily in her arms and leaped out the window. Scarlett landed softly on the ground and sprinted back to Chantal’s car. She jumped into the car and placed Chantal gently in the back seat. Immediately, Elliott was speeding down the road and out of the city to the Hales’ house. They arrived just a little while later and Scarlett yanked Chantal out of the car and into the enormous white house. The house looked different this time. The glass windows were all barred down with metal panels that looked pretty much indestructible, though Chantal expected that they wouldn’t keep a group of thirsty vampires out for very long.

When the three entered the house, Eleanor and Caleb were bent over a map on a table and Cedric was speaking rapidly into a phone, his words blurring together. He seemed angry. Scarlett pulled Chantal towards Eleanor by her wrist. Caleb looked up and immediately shied away by a few steps in precaution.

“So, where are we headed to? What’s our alibi?” Scarlett asked expectantly.

Eleanor sighed and ran her hand through her hair, “We’ve decided to send you to Chicago. It should be cloudy enough for you and Elliott to go out without much difficulty. You are accompanying Elliott in meeting his birth parents, who we’ve just recently found. I’m not so sure about Chantal’s story. It’s hard for me to find something that works well.”

“What if we just said she felt it was time for her to spread her wings,” Anavive suggested strolling down the spiral staircase. “It’s possible.”

Everyone looked up in surprise at Anavive’s suggestion. It was the one helpful thing she had said for Chantal’s benefit. But Anavive looked different today. Her hair was a spiky disarray, which on her, still looked beautiful, and her expression was slightly remorseful.

“I guess,” Eleanor agreed. She looked worriedly at Cedric, “Sweetheart, stop pestering Addisyn, you’ll give her a headache.”

Cedric glared at her silently, but didn’t let go of the phone or hang up. Eleanor walked over to him and held out her hand expectantly. He just stared back at her. Eleanor sighed and easily plucked the phone from Cedric’s iron grasp.

She brought the phone to her ear and said, “I’m terribly sorry about that, Addisyn, you can go. If you could, though, it would be nice if you could put Trinity on. I need to talk to her.”

A few moments later, Eleanor was talking rapidly, and Chantal could no longer understand what she was saying. Chantal walked up to Cedric and touched his cheek lightly. He looked down at her, his eyes burning. She smiled to comfort him and he pulled her close to him. They stood there for a while until Eleanor snapped the phone shut with a loud clap.

“Alright,” Eleanor said, “everything is all set up. Let’s get going. Scarlett, take the Porsche. It’s the fastest.”

“Wait,” Anavive said, “Let me take her.”

“What?” everyone exclaimed.

“Well, if they’ve been paying any attention to us at all, they I would be the last person they would expect her to be with,” Anavive explained. “It makes perfect sense.”

Cedric growled protectively under his breath, his arms tightening around Chantal’s waist. Anavive sighed and said, “Trust me on this one, Cedric, please. The last thing I want to do to you is hurt you.”

Scarlett said, “She’s right, Cedric. Let Chantal go with her. People here seem to overlook Anavive more than us anyways. She’s very quiet in public. They won’t notice her absence as much as they would notice ours.”

Cedric narrowed his eyes but warily loosened his grip on Chantal.  Elliott handed Anavive the duffel bag and Anavive darted out to the garage to put it in the car. Scarlett sprinted out after her, chattering informatively all the way. Cedric took Chantal’s face in his hands and looked deep into her eyes. He kissed her passionately and held her close.

“I love you,” he told her. “And I’m sorry for putting you in danger like this.”

“I forgive you, Cedric. And I love you too. That’ll never change.”

They smiled at each other and Chantal ran towards the garage. Just as she reached the door, a knock came from the front door. Everyone in the room froze.

“Cedric,” a smooth voice called from outside. “Please let us in. We haven’t talked in so long.”

Then, as if someone suddenly hit fast forward on a paused scene, everyone was in motion. Cedric, Eleanor, and Caleb were darting around the room, straightening things out. Anavive yanked Chantal into the garage and out of sight. Elliott pushed the door connecting the garage and the house closed behind them. Scarlett and Elliott ran up the staircase and out of sight so Anavive wouldn’t be the only one missing. Chantal found herself sitting in the back seat of a car and a cold hand touched her arm firmly.

“Don’t say a word,” Anavive hissed. “Stay silent and there may still be a chance for us to get away.”
