Chapter 3

Kittie pulled into her usual parking spot with a terrible feeling in the pit of her stomach. Something seemed off. Ethan was still uncharacteristically silent, even for his post-breakup moodiness. Liana was jittery and couldn’t seem to sit still. So much had happened in such a short period of time. And it wasn’t over yet. She could just feel it.

When Kittie stepped out of the car, she linked arms with Liana and locked her car. She watched Ethan stride morosely towards his friends. She gazed in shock as the strange new girl, Kai, walked up to him casually and began talking to him. Halfway through her sentence she stopped, studying his face. Her eyes widened, her expression suddenly turned furious. She grabbed Ethan’s wrist and dragged him away from his friends. When they were in a relatively less populated place, she began talking again, her expression still frustrated. By this time, Kittie was already making her way through the crowds in the courtyard, readying herself to jump to Ethan’s defense if she needed to. She motioned for Liana to go on without her to their lockers. She walked up to Ethan’s side just as Kai was finishing her rant.

and after everything I told you! You’re so stupid, Ethan,” she scoffed.

“Shut up,” he protested. “That’s none of your business anyways.”

“Yes it is,” she insisted. “You’re going to kill yourself.”

“I’ll be fine.”

“No you won’t,” she said with more force than before. Her hand flew at his face, leaving a large red mark on his cheek.

“Hey,” Kittie said, pushing Kai away from Ethan. “Back off.”

“Stay out if this,” Kai said, “This has nothing to do with you.”

“This has everything to do with me. Ethan is my twin brother.”

Kai laughed loudly, “And you still don’t know, do you?”

“Know what?” Kittie demanded, getting extremely annoyed with this strange, yet somehow captivating girl.

“Hah,” Kai snickered over her shoulder as she walked away, “wouldn’t you like to know?”

Kittie watched in shock as Kai strode away and then she turned to Ethan with her hands on her hips, annoyed.

“What was that about?” she demanded.

“Nothing,” Ethan mumbled, starting to walk away.

Kittie caught his arm and said, “Oh no, you don’t. You are going to tell me what’s going on. And you’re going to tell me right now.”

Ethan looked at her for a long moment, like he was judging to see if she was actually serious or not. He sighed and whispered, “I can’t.”

“Why?”

“I just can’t, Kit,” he said, exasperated. “Just trust me on this one, okay?”

“Ethan,” Kittie called after him, still confused as he walked away.

He just waved his hand over his head back at her but didn’t turn around. Kittie sighed as she watched him walk off. The warning bell signaling five minutes before the period jolted her out of her thoughts. She ran to her locker, quickly grabbing what she needed, and then ran to her first class, English. When she entered the room, Liana waved to her and Kittie walked to the seat that Liana had saved for her. They had gotten lucky this year and had almost all of their classes together.

“So,” Kittie asked, “Have you talked to Caelan yet?”

Liana sighed, “Unfortunately yes. I didn’t tell him, but he seems to be suspicious.”

“You should tell him,” Kittie encouraged. “He’s your boyfriend. He has a right to know.”

“Yeah, I know,” Liana said reluctantly, “I just can’t figure out how to tell him.”

“Just tell him,” Kittie said, “I’ll be with you the whole time.”

Liana nodded as the teacher walked into the room and began class. She bit her lip, anxiety already beginning to rattle her.

––––––

Kittie linked arms with Liana and pulled her towards Caelan and his friends. Liana was dragging her feet, but Kittie insisted on continuing.

“C’mon, Liana,” Kittie encouraged her friend. “He’s going to find out sooner or later. You might as well be the one to tell him. You know the school’s too small to keep secrets.”

“I know,” Liana sighed, “I’m just really nervous.”

“Don’t worry,” Kittie assured her friend, “I’ll be with you the whole time. I promise.”

Liana nodded uncertainly and tapped Caelan on the shoulder. He turned around and when he saw her, a big smile broke out on his face. He pulled her into a hug.

“Hey, Liana, what’s up?” he asked.

“Um, actually, there’s something I wanted to talk to you about,” Liana said.

Immediately, a pained looked crossed his face and she quickly assured him, “Don’t worry, it’s not what you think. But it’s really important.”

“Okay,” he said hesitantly.

Liana looked at Kittie nervously and Kittie smiled in encouragement. Caelan looked at Kittie and raised his eyebrows. He held eye contact with her for just a few seconds too long. Kittie looked away uncomfortably. Even though Caelan was arguably one of the hottest guys at school, Kittie never felt comfortable with flirting back when he flirted with her. Kittie felt horrible knowing that, had Caelan not been Liana’s boyfriend, she probably would’ve gone after him. Kittie bit her lip and looked at the ground. She followed Liana as Liana pulled Caelan to an empty part of the courtyard. Kittie zoned out as Liana retold her story, but was brought back to reality when Caelan shouted in response.

What?!” he roared.

Liana put her hand on his arm and told him, “Caelan, please calm down. I don’t need you to get mad. I just thought you should know.”

Caelan closed his eyes and took a deep breath. When he opened his eyes again, he seemed to be in a calmer mood. He pulled her into a hug, “What’re you going to do?”

“Well,” Liana started to say. She told him almost exactly what she told Kittie last night. While she was talking, Caelan looked over her shoulder and into Kittie’s blue eyes. Kittie blushed and looked away. This was wrong. It was wrong to like your best friend’s boyfriend. It was wrong to lead him on like this. This had to stop.

“Caelan?” Liana asked, looking up at him. “Did you hear what I said?”

“Oh, um, yeah,” Caelan said, smiling convincingly, “Don’t worry, Liana, we’ll figure something out. I promise.”

Liana smiled at him and kissed him lightly. He smiled back at her and Kittie felt a pang of jealousy. As glad as she was that Liana was so happy with Caelan, she couldn’t help but feel as if it was just a bit unfair. Kittie hadn’t had a boyfriend since her ex painfully dumped her last spring. She felt empty. She felt like she needed someone to support her in her life that was now spiraling out of control.
