Chapter 14
They had been sitting in Cedric’s room, the last room in the long hallway of the upstairs floor, for a little more than an hour when Cedric’s head snapped up. Chantal, who was leaning quite comfortably on his chest while working on some weekend homework, looked up at him curiously.
He smiled, “Your dinner’s ready, Chantal.”
He led her back downstairs. Chantal widened her eyes at how delicious the room smelled. She saw Eleanor setting a bowl of spaghetti on the coffee table in front of the couches. For someone who hadn’t eaten a proper meal in centuries, Eleanor sure knew how to cook. Chantal thanked Eleanor politely before beginning her meal.
“Scarlett, Elliott,” Eleanor called.
The pair darted into the room, Scarlett’s eyes bright with excitement. Both of their eyes were far lighter than they had been when Chantal last saw them. Behind them trailed Caleb, just as silent and stoic as before. He stood silently at the doorway, staying far away from Chantal. Scarlett chattered merrily about this thing and that, and when Chantal had finished her meal, Eleanor whisked the bowl away. She was back in an instant and had an expectant look on her face.
“Now, Chantal,” she said warmly, “I’m sure you have some questions for us. I’ll try to answer them as best as I can.”
“Well, yes,” Chantal said, phrasing her question carefully, “Cedric told me about how you guys all have, like, special talents that work under any circumstance. I was wondering why Anavive’s power doesn’t work on me.”
Eleanor smiled, “Well, dear, if you’ll recall when you first saw her, her gift did work quite effectively at first. It wasn’t until you told her to stop that her gift stopped working. My speculation is that you can somehow manipulate when certain things work on your mind, though I’m not entirely sure. Would you mind if we experimented a bit?”
“It depends,” Chantal said cautiously.
“On what?”
“If I’ll get hurt or not.”
“Of course we won’t let anything happen to you,” Eleanor replied, “We just want to try some of our own gifts on you and see what happens. Our gifts are quite harmless.”
“Okay,” Chantal agreed and she could see a smile creep onto Elliott’s face. She looked at him and asked, “What?”
“Oh,” he said innocently, “nothing. But, if you want my opinion, Chantal, I really do think the blue dress looks better on you.”
Chantal’s eyes widened, “Hey! You’re not supposed to know that. You’re reading my mind aren’t you?”
“What else?” he said, raising an eyebrow.
“Well, stop!” she insisted, “It’s annoying.”
“Not good enough,” Elliott smiled again, “It’s terrible that you did that to your housekeeper. I’m sure she’ll be very angry when she finds out.”
“Stop!” commanded Chantal with more force than before.
Abruptly, Elliott’s expression fell. He sighed, “You’re no fun.”
“Wait,” Chantal said incredulously, “It worked?”
“Yup,” Scarlett said, “But only because you wanted it to. The first time you told him to stop, I don’t think you were quite serious enough about it.”
Chantal opened her mouth to reply, but she suddenly felt a surge of lethargy roll through her body. She immediately began feeling sleepy and had to struggle to keep her eyes open.
“Eleanor?” she asked.
“Yes,” Eleanor confirmed that she was doing this to Chantal.
“Stop. I don’t want to go to sleep,” Chantal complained, her words slurring together as they always did when she was tired.
But no matter how much she protested, she couldn’t fight the feeling that was pressing down on her. She was about to fall asleep when the atmosphere suddenly lifted, allowing her to return to her usual self again.
“Just as I thought,” Eleanor said. “Your little ability only works on gifts that do not affect you in a physical way.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean,” Eleanor explained, “that your ability only works on things in the mind. My gift, for example, actually messes with the chemicals in your brain, making you genuinely feel the emotion that I want you to. But Anavive’s gift is actually just an illusion of pain. So, you’re able to block Anavive’s gift, but not mine.”
Chantal pursed her lips, thinking that over as conversations floated around her. She was still deep in thought when Eleanor stood up and told her, “Chantal, I believe we need to get you home soon. It’s nearly ten, and I think your parents would like it if we didn’t keep you as late as your curfew allows.”
Chantal nodded and thanked Eleanor again for the meal, before following Cedric out the back door to the garage. She waved goodbye over her shoulder to Scarlett and Elliott. Cedric held open the passenger door of Chantal’s car for her and he drove off in the direction of Chantal’s house. Chantal wasn’t shocked that he got there in record time. He helped Chantal get out of the car and walked her to the door.
“Goodnight, Chantal,” he said, “I hope you sleep well.”
“Can’t you stay?” she pleaded.
“I’m sorry, my dear,” he said, “but I can’t. I have many things to take care of this weekend.”
“I’ll miss you.”
“As will I. I’ll see you on Monday.”
He kissed her lightly on her forehead before sprinting off into the distance, disappearing into the darkness within seconds. Chantal sighed, knowing that she’d have to get through an entire weekend without him. For once, she couldn’t wait for school.
–––
On Monday morning, when Chantal walked outside to get to her car, she was surprised to see him leaning against the door.
“Cedric!” she exclaimed, running towards him and pulling him into a hug.
He laughed and pulled her closer to him. “Good morning, my dear. I hope you had an enjoyable weekend.”
“It would’ve been more enjoyable if you were here with me,” she told him.
He chuckled and kissed her lightly. He held the passenger door open of her and they sped to school. When they got there, Chantal saw Scarlett and Elliott waiting for them in their usual spot. And, as usual, Anavive was nowhere to be seen. Chantal smiled and waved to them, and Scarlett waved back, bouncing on her toes. Cedric took Chantal’s hand and guided her quickly through the crowds of people.
“Good morning, Chantal,” Scarlett greeted cheerily.
“Hey,” Chantal said, “What’s up?”
Scarlett opened her mouth to reply, getting about half a word out before she reached into her purse and pulled out her ringing phone. Just like the phone that Chantal had used on Friday, this phone was blood red.
She held the phone up to her ear and smiled, “Soleil! How are you?”
Scarlett’s bright expression immediately fell, as she listened to what Soleil was saying. Her confused expression quickly turned to one of horror.
She shook her head, “But how—”
She was interrupted and listened for several moments.
“Yes, but—”
She was interrupted again and was silent for just a second before trying to speak again.
“Well, I just—”
Scarlett was interrupted yet again, and even Chantal could hear the angry voice shouting into the phone.
“Okay,” Scarlett said forcefully, “I get it. We’ll figure something out. I promise. Bye.”
Scarlett snapped the phone shut and lifted her gaze cautiously to meet Cedric’s. His eyes were blank and his hand tightened slightly around Chantal’s.
“I’m sorry,” Scarlett whispered so quietly Chantal didn’t quite catch it.
When Cedric remained silent, Scarlett sighed and said, a little louder this time, “Cedric, you know what you have to do. Think about it. It’s really the only way.”
Chantal looked on in confusion. Her eyes darted from Scarlett’s face to Cedric’s face and then back to Scarlett. She put her hand on her hip.
“What’s going on?” she demanded.
Scarlett and Cedric said nothing, staring into each other’s eyes, each trying to win the silent competition they were having. Chantal stared at both of them, hoping that someone would say something. When no one said a word, she began to feel annoyed.
“Well?” she asked.
Elliott sighed and explained, “Another coven is coming. They’ve heard of our connection to you. And they’ll be here soon.”
