Chapter 12

Chantal looked up at Cedric’s perfect face and smiled, “Anything?”

“Yes.”

“And you’ll tell the truth?” she asked, her smile growing wider.

“So I promised.”

Chantal snuggled back up against his marble chest again. She asked, “Can you tell me about how your family came together?”

“It’s a long story,” he warned.

“I have time,” she murmured, closing her eyes.

He smiled and began talking in a soft, melodious voice, “Eleanor was born many centuries ago, in London in the early seventeenth century. Her parents were very influential, and she was often free to do whatever she wanted. She often liked to go on long walks through the quieter parts of the city, sometimes venturing outside of city limits a bit. It was on one of these walks when she stumbled upon a small coven of vampires living there. Luckily, she was still in an inhabited area, and when they attacked her and she screamed, people came rushing out of the buildings in the neighborhood. The vampires’ attention was diverted quickly enough that Eleanor wasn’t killed. However, she soon was in intense pain and quickly dragged herself out of sight. She hid for three days and three nights, and when she emerged again, she was different. She realized that she had become a vampire and was horrified. So, she ran away. She ran far away from human civilization and sat in a dark cave so she would not be found. She thought of herself as a monster, and wanted with all of her heart to die.”

He paused briefly, seemingly making a decision before proceeding with the tale. Chantal suspected that he was editing out something that she shouldn’t know.

“However, she soon discovered that she could survive without drinking human blood. So, for a few years, she lived in the wilderness, hunting only animals. After just half a year of her new diet, her eye color had changed from the newborn red to the violet blue that you see today. A decade later, she reentered human civilization in England again, but far away from her hometown for fear that she would be recognized. She was very careful since people at that time were very suspicious of people thought to be vampires or witches.

She was able to enroll in some night classes, until she finally found her calling. She studied in England for a while at a college, studying all subjects. And, oddly enough, she took especial interest in both the Arts as well as medicine, two completely opposite fields. As soon as she graduated and received her degree in medicine, she moved. She moved to another part of Europe and continued to learn. She moved over and over again, and during this time, she trained herself to be all but immune to the smell of human blood. She has by far the cleanest record of all of us.

Eventually, Eleanor decided that it was time for change. She had been all over Europe and never found a place where she really fit in, and she was lonely. So, she traveled to the New World, here. Here, people were less aware of demons, so she found it quite easy to associate with others. She met many people and was often praised for her many talents, but she still felt empty. She needed a companion and strangely enough, the perfect thing happened.

She was out hunting one day when she caught the scent of a human. She followed the trail to its source and she found Scarlett, who had been beaten. Scarlett had wounds all over her body and was bleeding profusely. There was no way she would survive. So, Eleanor rationalized, she was saving this girl’s life when she changed her. And, three days later, Eleanor had the companion she had always wanted.”

He paused again and pursed his lips, deep in thought.

“Who came next?” Chantal prompted.

Cedric smiled at her and whispered, “I did. I had always been adventurous as a human and I loved going out into the woods hiking. However, one day, I strayed too far from the path, and I got quite lost. I wandered around for hours before nightfall. When the sun set, I was still lost, except now, I couldn’t see. So, I sat down by a tree and tried, quite unsuccessfully, to keep myself warm. Over the night, I developed a quite severe case of hypothermia. It was in this state that Eleanor found me. At the time, there was no way for hospitals to save me, there just wasn’t the technology. Eleanor knew this, so she did the best thing for me. She changed me. I believe that at the time she meant for Scarlett and I to be each others mates, but that never happened. Scarlett has always been merely a sister to me. But, either way, Eleanor was happy with the small family that we were.

A while later, we found Elliott, who was already a vampire at the time. He was terribly confused, and Eleanor gave him a place to call home. He and Scarlett connected almost immediately, and Eleanor was very happy for them. But, as months and years passed, she grew worried about me. She was worried that I would never find anyone, even though she didn’t have someone of her own. That was when Scarlett found Anavive, who had fallen from a building. Her heart was still beating, and when Scarlett brought her to Eleanor, Eleanor was able to save her. Now, I’m absolutely positive that Eleanor wanted Anavive and I to be together, but I simply didn’t feel that connection that Scarlett had described to me. Anavive, however, seemed to fully believe that I was the one for her, though there was no way I could be.

Anyways, our lives passed easily enough until just over fifty years ago, when Eleanor found Caleb, the most recent and final addition to our family. He is the one who has the hardest time sticking to our diet, but he manages. As I told you before, he is the father figure of the family even though he is the youngest. That is because, to be honest, once you get past the harsh front that he often puts on, he’s one of the most understanding people you will ever meet. I know that sounds incredibly cliché, but it really is the truth. He went through a lot as a human and understands the importance of small, everyday events. As for his hunting problem, Eleanor keeps him in check.”

He stopped speaking and looked at Chantal, studying her face carefully. “I keep waiting for you to finally have a rational reaction to the things I tell you,” he told her, “Most people would be running and screaming by now.”

“And I keep waiting for you to tell me I’m too ordinary for you. Most people as perfect as you are would be looking for someone just as perfect,” Chantal joked. “Keep dreaming, Cedric.”

“We’ll see. Any more questions?”

“Yes,” Chantal said, thinking. “What does your family think of me? Do they think your crazy for choosing a human?”

Cedric laughed his musical laugh and said, “Yes, they did think I was a bit crazy at first, but they were just happy that I had found someone. I think Eleanor was beginning to think there was something wrong with me.”

“But, what about Anavive?”

“Ah,” Cedric said, his voice just the slightest bit darker, “well, she isn’t taking this very well, even though I’ve made it abundantly clear to her in the past that I do not love her as anything more than a sister. But, she’ll come around. I’m sure she will.”

“Where was Anavive anyways? It’s almost a month into school.”

“Anavive was traveling abroad,” Cedric said simply, “Just as all of us like to do every now and again.”

Chantal nodded and changed the subject, “Eleanor mentioned something before, about Anavive’s gift? Do you all have powers like that?”

Cedric smiled, “Yes we all do, but they’re not quite as menacing as Anavive’s is. The belief among vampires is that we all bring the strongest quality from our human life into our vampire life. For example, Eleanor had been very influential in her human life, so she has the ability to manipulate emotions. Caleb had a good sense of direction as a human, and now, he’s a tracker. Both Scarlett and I were quite perceptive, so our abilities are quite similar. Scarlett can see people’s intentions and I am able to see the truth in people’s words. Anavive was always scornful and liked to play mind games as a human, and she thus has the ability to cause the illusion of pain. We’re not so sure about Elliott though, his memories from his human life are vaguer than the rest of ours.”

“Then why was Anavive so surprised that her power didn’t work on me?”

“Well, these gifts generally work under any circumstance. It’s a very effortless thing for us, really,” he explained. “Only very few other vampires have the ability to stop any kind of gift, whether it is physical or simply an illusion.”

“Oh,” Chantal said, still a bit confused, “Then why can I do this?”

“I have no idea, my dear,” he said softly, “But we’ll get that sorted out later. I’m sure Eleanor will be able to find a way to explain all of this.”

“Mmhmm,” Chantal nodded, rolling onto her back to look up at the constantly thinning clouds.

Cedric’s cool fingers ran through her hair and traced the contours of her face. He pressed his lips to her temple, dragging them down her jaw line and neck before planting a light kiss on her collarbone. He brushed his nose against her neck and left his head resting there. Chantal felt her heart quicken and she momentarily forgot how to breathe. When she finally gasped for air again, she struggled to keep her breathing even, trying not to hyperventilate.

Chantal felt Cedric smile against her neck and he whispered, sending a cool shiver dancing across her skin, “I know this is no justification for putting you in such great danger, but I can’t deny it any longer. I love you. I can’t bear to live without you.”
