Chapter 2
“Can I take the car? I want to go out,” Ethan said suddenly after a few hours of working.
“Um, sure,” Kittie nodded, slightly hesitantly, “Have fun.”
She watched him walk out the door and sighed. Her black poodle, Persephone, walked up to her and placed her head on Kittie’s lap. Kittie smiled and petted the curly black fur on her head softly.
“What am I going to do, Persephone?” she wondered out loud. “Things are so crazy right now. I’m not sure how much more I can deal with.”
Then, as perfectly timed as could be, a frantic knocking sound filled the air. Kittie stood up from the kitchen table and walked swiftly to the door. She yanked it open to find Liana in tears, with her hair half pulled out of a very messy ponytail. She was wearing sweat pants and a bulky sweatshirt and she was hunched over.
Kittie led her friend into her room and locked the door behind her so they could talk.
“What happened to you?” she asked, pulling her friend into a hug, “you look awful.”
Liana nodded and sniffled loudly. Many minutes passed before she was calm enough to talk. And even then, her voice was only a quiet whisper and her jagged breathing interrupted her sentences often.
“After Gym today,” she began softly, “When I went inside to change back into my normal clothes, Miranda and her friends took all of my clothes and my cell phone and they threw them in the mud. I’m sure they broke my cell phone. They locked me in the bathroom and just left me there. I had to wait forever till the janitor” – her voice broke – “came to clean up the bathroom. And he… he…”
Liana couldn’t finish her sentence. She broke into a fresh round of tears. She cried into Kittie’s shoulder.
Kittie hugged her friend sympathetically and asked, already half knowing what had happened, “Then what?”
Liana’s voice was almost inaudible as she pronounced her next words. “He… raped me.” Then her words came out in a blurred rush, new tears streaming down her cheeks. “Oh, Kit, I feel so disgusting. I mean, I know it wasn’t my fault by oh my god I’m so scared now. And it hurt like hell. I can’t even think straight. And I’m so scared to tell my parents about them because I know they’ll, like, totally freak out or something and pull me out of school or something dramatic like that. Oh my god, I don’t know what I should do anymore.”
Even though Kittie had expected it, Liana’s words still shocked her, but she kept her expression neutral for her friend’s sake. She looked down at Liana and said, “Look, why don’t you tell your parents you’re sleeping over tonight? It’ll give us plenty of time to talk about it.”
Liana nodded, but didn’t move or stop crying. Kittie asked, “Do you want me to call them?”
Liana nodded again, wiping tears off of her cheeks. Kittie smiled and told her, “You can use my shower if you want.”
Liana smiled gratefully and ran into Kittie’s large private bathroom. Minutes later, the water was running and Kittie turned her attention elsewhere. She bit her lip and picked up the cordless phone sitting on her bedside table. She quickly thought over what she was going to say before dialing Liana’s home phone number.
“Hello?” Liana’s mother greeted from the other end of the phone.
“Hi, Mrs. McCormick,” Kittie greeted cheerily, “I was wondering if Liana could spend the night at my house. She came over after school so we could do homework together, and she mentioned that she wanted to stay over tonight.”
“Sure,” Mrs. McCormick replied easily, “And you’ll bring her to school tomorrow?”
“Of course,” Kittie said instinctively.
“Alright then. Thanks for calling, Kittie. I hope you two have fun tonight.”
Kittie chuckled falsely, “Thanks, Mrs. McCormick. Bye.”
After she hung up, she let out a held breath. She lay back on her bed and turned on her iPod, sending music blasting from the four black speakers in her room. She must’ve dozed off, because the next thing she knew, Liana was shaking her awake.
“Kittie,” Liana said softly. “Wake up, Kittie.”
Kittie blinked a few times and sat up, smoothing down her hair. “I’m up, I’m up,” she smiled, “Sorry about that; I didn’t get much sleep last night.”
“It’s no big deal,” Liana assured her, smiling weakly. It seemed like the shower had calmed her down a bit.
“I told your parents you came over this afternoon to do homework,” Kittie told her friend, “They don’t suspect a thing.”
Liana sighed, “Good. I can’t have them know this; at least, not now. It would be too much for them to deal with.”
“Do you want to talk about it?” asked Kittie, “I’m all ears.”
“I don’t know,” Liana said hesitantly. “I mean I’m just scared to death right now. It was so horrible. But, like, I kind of feel like I want a couple of days to think about it, you know?”
“Sure,” Kittie said understandingly. Suddenly, a thought came to mind. “Have you told Caelan about this yet?”
Caelan was Liana’s boyfriend. They had been going out since their sophomore year, and they were as close as could be.
Liana sighed, “No, you’re the only person who knows. I just can’t bring myself to tell him, even if I should. I just know he’s going to get so mad, and I kind of don’t need that right now.”
Suddenly, a door slammed shut and heavy footsteps could be heard throughout the house. A knock came from Kittie’s door.
“Kit?” someone called, “You in there?”
Kittie looked at Liana and Liana nodded, so Kittie walked over to the door and pulled it open. “Yes?”
When the door pulled open, it revealed Ethan, who was leaning on the doorjamb. His long black bangs shadowed his face, and he showed no sign of emotion. He raised his eyebrows as he looked over Kittie’s shoulder and spotted Liana.
“Oh, hey Liana,” he said, “I didn’t expect to see you here.”
“Liana just stopped by,” Kittie explained, “She’s spending the night.”
“Oh,” Ethan said, looking slightly dismayed. “Okay.”
Kittie studied Ethan’s face carefully, “Have you been crying? Your eyes are all red.”
“Um, yeah,” he said slowly, “I guess I’ll talk to you later, Kit.”
“Sure,” Kittie said as he turned to leave, pulling the door shut behind him. She sighed.
“What?” Liana asked.
“Oh, Ethan’s just going through some tough times,” Kittie said, flopping face-down onto her fluffy duvet. “Ava broke up with him again.”
“Ah,” Liana said, knowing very well what happened every time they broke up. She stared out of Kittie’s window and at the darkening evening sky.
“So,” Kittie said, drawing Liana out of her thoughts, “homework?”
“Actually, homework sounds really nice right now,” Liana said softly, “I need some normality in my life.”
And with that, they set to work. Kittie’s parents arrived home shortly after they began, and soon it was dinner. The meal passed smoothly enough, though it was unusually quiet, with Ethan staring glumly at his food and Liana not saying a word, though very politely. Even so, Kittie was slightly relieved. Since Liana was over, her parents wouldn’t fight. At least, they wouldn’t fight as much or as loudly. They put on quite of show of civility, talking to each other normally for the first time in over a week.
But that night, as Kittie tried to sleep, she tossed and turned, caught up in a frightening nightmare. She nearly awoke screaming, and her dream left her with a horrible premonition, as if things were only going to get worse from here.
