Chapter 11

Chantal felt an electrical shiver shoot up her spine. Cedric sighed, his cool, sweet breath dancing across Chantal’s skin. He cupped her face with his hands and pulled her face away from his. Chantal looked up into his eyes, confused. He lowered his head so his forehead was gently touching hers.

“I’m sorry,” he said softly, “I can’t do this. I care about you, Chantal, I really do. But, this is just too much to ask of me right now. I’m sorry.”

She smiled sympathetically, but at the same time knowing that just a month ago, this kind of thing would’ve infuriated her. But meeting Cedric had changed her, for the better. She touched his face gently with her fingertips and said, “It’s okay. I understand. Can we go?”

He smiled back, “Sure. There’s somewhere I want you to see. Let’s take your car.”

“Why?” she wondered.

“My darling siblings have to get home someway, they? It would be very helpful if they had a car,” he said.

She smiled and nodded and walked over to her car, not letting go of Cedric’s hand. She unlocked her car and was reaching for the handle to the door of the driver’s side when Cedric’s hand caught hers.

“I’m driving today,” he grinned, “You don’t even know where to go.”

She nodded, and before she knew it, they were speeding down the highway. She watched how effortless driving looked for him. She sighed, a million different questions popping into her head, but one more important than the rest.

“Can I ask a favor today?” she asked.

“It depends on what you want,” Cedric said carefully.

“Well,” Chantal said, intertwining her fingers with his on the smooth leather seat. “If it isn’t too much to ask, I would like it if you told me the full truth of everything today.”

Cedric’s head snapped around to face her and he asked, “What to do you mean?”

“I just mean that whenever I ask you something, it feels like you’re only telling me half of the truth. But, today I want you to tell me everything.”

His expression softened.

“You’re exceptionally observant,” he noted.

“Is that a yes?” Chantal’s face was hopeful.

“Do I have a choice?”

Chantal smiled, “Not really.”

Cedric chuckled and looked, once again, to the road in front of them. Chantal followed his gaze and was shocked by how fast the road was flying by. She realized that they were going over a hundred miles per hour.

“Oh my god,” she exclaimed, “slow down!”

“Why would I do that?” he asked, confused. “We’re almost there anyways.”

“Almost where? Where are we going? Why are you driving so fast? Why aren’t you looking at the road?” Chantal’s worried questions came out in a jumble.

“Relax, Chantal,” Cedric assured her. “I have everything under control. I’ve been driving like this for longer than you can imagine.”

“Why won’t you answer my questions?” Chantal countered.

“Because,” he smiled, “we’re already here.”

“Wha” Chantal began to ask, but as she looked out at the scene in front of her, her sentence trailed off, forgotten. They had been driving so smoothly, that she hadn’t even notice them stop.

In front of her stood a sunlit clearing in the middle of some trees that Chantal didn’t even notice until now. Just down a small, dirt path was a beautiful white house. It had big windows on all sides and had colorful flowers growing around it. It looked very old, and had a slight Victorian flair to it, but it was altogether stunning and timeless. Chantal was in awe.

“Do you like it?” Cedric asked, smiling at Chantal’s expression.

“I love it!” she exclaimed, “Do you really live here?”

He laughed, “Of course, even we vampires have to live somewhere, don’t we?”

Chantal was surprised at how calmly he used that term. Although she had known what the Hales were for quite a while now, it was still hard for her to voice the fact.

Cedric began driving, more slowly this time, around the house to a large garage in the back. “I’ll leave your car here for now,” he told her, “I’ll drive you home later tonight.”

Chantal nodded and stepped out of her car, noticing the other cars in the garage. They were all the type of cars that were extremely fast and extremely expensive. They also happened to be incredibly eye-catching and flashy. She caught herself lingering in one place longer than she normally would.

“Come on,” Cedric beckoned to her, “This isn’t the place I wanted to show you.”

He led her outside, into the open meadow.

“It’s so empty,” Chantal murmured.

“Now?” he replied, “Yes, but normally, you won’t believe how lively this place gets. It’s a good thing we live so far from everyone else.”

“Eleanor,” Chantal said suddenly, “Where is she? If she drives as fast as you, then she’d be here already.”

Cedric smiled, “She’s probably getting things sorted out with the administration at school. With Anavive enrolled in Bayview, the school will be overenrolled, but only very slightly. I assume Eleanor has a bit of persuading to do. And Caleb hardly ever leaves her side, so I expect that he drove them to school.”

“Who’s Caleb?”

“The father figure of the family, or so the charade goes,” he answered. “But to be honest, I believe that both Elliott and I are much more civilized than he is.”

“I’m so confused,” Chantal furrowed her eyebrows.

Cedric smiled, “Then I promise I explain thoroughly when we get there.”

“Where?” she asked impatiently for the umpteenth time.

He smiled wider and scooped her up in his arms.

“Hold on tight,” he whispered. “And you may want to close your eyes. It’s quite startling at first.”

Chantal barely had time to coil her arms around Cedric’s neck before they were off, speeding through the meadow and then breaking through the barrier of trees and into the small forest. Chantal’s eyes widened as she saw how fast they were going. Trees and bushed whizzed past them in an endless green blur, branches just barely missing them. Chantal cringed into Cedric’s chest in fear. It was terrifying, going at this speed.

Then, as abruptly as he had begun, he stopped, on the fringes of a smaller clearing revealing a cliff overlooking the blue black sea. Cedric was smiling lightheartedly and looked down at Chantal, who was still clinging to him.

“How are we holding up?”

Chantal felt frozen. All she could manage to say was, “Help.”

Cedric chuckled and easily removed her arms from his neck. He lowered her softly to the grassy ground and brushed her cheek with his hand.

“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice concerned.

She smiled weakly, “Just give me a sec.”

Chantal took many deep breaths to calm her thumping heart. As she began to calm down, she struggled to keep her expression from breaking into a wide grin. However terrifying that experience may have been, once Chantal got over the how unbelievably fast they had been going, she found it exhilarating. It was like riding a roller coaster, only better. Cedric studied her face carefully, his expression still worried. Suddenly, Chantal surprised him by bursting into laughter. She lay down in the soft grass, her cheery giggles floating into the air.

“That,” she said between laughs, “was so much fun!”

Cedric’s expression changed to one of bemused shock. He raised his eyebrows, “You weren’t scared?”

“Well, I kind of was a first,” she admitted, “but after I got over that it was so much fun. It was like riding a roller coaster!”

Cedric smiled slightly and lay down beside her, propping himself up on his arm. He absently fiddled with her wavy hair.

“You really are odd,” he murmured. “Any normal person would be scared half to death.”

Chantal giggled giddily some more and rolled onto her side. He pulled her closer into his arms. She pressed her cheek into his chest, inhaling his sweet scent. She felt truly at peace for the first time in a long time. He kissed the top of her head lovingly and held her close.

“I thought it was hard for you to be so close to me,” she said softly, not wanting to ruin the moment.

He smiled into her hair, “It still is, but it’s bearable. I’m afraid I love you too much to hurt you, though the risk of being with me still remains.”

She giggled softly and closed her eyes, “Don’t forget. I still have questions for you.”

“We have all day, my dear. Anything you want to know, just ask me, and I’ll answer. I promise.”
