Chapter 10
The rest of the week was a blur. Chantal and Cedric became closer and closer, but many times, Cedric reminded her how dangerous it was to be with him, and Chantal constantly ignored his warnings. Still, Cedric established careful boundaries between them, and he always made sure to keep a safe distance away from her. The two of them still sat together at lunch every day, and Chantal was discovering more and more about Cedric’s mysterious lifestyle, but there always seemed to be something that he wasn’t telling her.
For example, one day she asked, “So, what’s your relationship to Eleanor? She seems too young to be your mom.”
Cedric chuckled, “She’s my aunt, my mother’s younger sister. Both of my parents died in an accident many years back, and Scarlett and I were left under Eleanor’s care.”
“And you love her,” Chantal stated simply. It was easy to see the admiration coloring Cedric’s voice.
“Yes,” He said, “She’s one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. I’m very grateful that she decided to take us in.”
Chantal smiled, hopefully convincingly, but she had a feeling that none of the Hales were actually related, though he had never explicitly said this. They all looked far too different.

Over the course of the next week, Scarlett apologized sweetly for her behavior on Monday in Chemistry.
“I’m terribly sorry,” she had said, her voice like flowing honey, “about my behavior last Monday when Cedric was still gone. You see, I was incredibly worried, and I just jumped to conclusions. It was wrong of me to do so. I hope you can understand and forgive me.”
After the initial stumble between the two of them, Chantal and Scarlett got along very well, and soon became good friends. Chantal felt genuinely happy that things had gotten straightened out in these two weeks that Cedric was present at school. When it was finally Friday, the end of the third week of school, Chantal stood up to go to class when the bell rang signaling the end of lunch. She expected Cedric to do the same, but he didn’t move.
“Aren’t you going to class?” she asked.
“Nope,” he replied, his eyes twinkling, “It’s good to skip class every now and then. Besides, it’s going to be quite a sunny afternoon. It’d be such a waste to sit in a classroom all afternoon.”
She raised her eyebrows. By the way he said this, she couldn’t help but wonder if he had an ulterior motive.
He grinned, “Relax, Chantal, I’m not going to do anything bad. You can accompany me if you would like.”
Chantal couldn’t help it, her face broke into a smile. Spending an entire afternoon with Cedric, and nothing to interrupt them; this was going to be a great way to end the week.
Cedric and Chantal slipped easily through the bustling hallway and were able to exit the school unnoticed. Chantal looked up at the sky and saw that Cedric was right. The normally ominous clouds seemed to be thinning, and it looked like it would be sunny by the time school let out. Chantal felt her mood lift. Sunny days in Portland were rare and cherished among everyone. They gave everyone an excuse to go out with their friends, a thing that was always welcome.
Chantal laughed and skipped through the school’s courtyard towards the parking lot. She heard Cedric laugh quietly behind her and when she turned around, she was surprised to see him following easily right behind her, though he was only walking. She smiled and laced her fingers with his.
“So, what do you want to do today?” she asked cheerily.
He laughed again and said, “You sure are cheerful today.”
“Of course!” she exclaimed. “It’s going to be so pretty when the sun comes out!”
He smiled and said half-heartedly, “It is, isn’t it?”
Chantal tilted her head and asked, “Don’t you like sun?”
“It’s not that I don’t like it,” he said simply, “I just have to be more careful when it’s sunny out.”
She was about to ask more when Cedric’s head jerked up and he froze in his tracks. She followed his gaze and found Eleanor walking with a tall Asian girl. The girl, like all of the Hales, was extremely pale, had dark circles under her eyes, and had stunning violet-blue eyes. She walked across the parking lot with grace and poise, her short black bob fluttering slightly in the breeze. Chantal couldn’t help but feel a stab of jealousy as she saw how breathtakingly beautiful this girl was. She looked like a flawless high-fashion model, and she was impeccably dressed. Though the clothes she wore were quite simple, they accentuated her slim figure and hinted at designer origins. Now that she thought about it, Chantal realized that all of the Hales were always wearing simple, dark, but expensive looking clothing. Not that they really needed to. They were all so beautiful that they could’ve tossed on rags and still look above everyone else.
Eleanor smiled warmly at Cedric and when the Asian girl followed her gaze, her red-pink lips curled up into a coy smile. As they approached Cedric and Chantal, Eleanor said, “Hello, Cedric, what are the two of you up to?”
“We were just about to go out,” he said, his voice tight.
The Asian girl smiled, with a slightly menacingly edge, at Chantal and asked, “Who’s this?”
Cedric narrowed his eyes, and Eleanor stepped slightly between them and said, “This is Chantal, Cedric’s friend.”
“Oh,” the girl said, “I see how it is.”
Her smile collapsed and a piercing glare took its place. She looked straight into Chantal’s grey eyes and immediately, Chantal felt a sharp stab of pain overtake her body. She cringed and her knees wobbled helplessly. She would’ve fallen over in pain if Cedric hadn’t caught her firmly around her waist. The Asian girl grinned smugly.
“Anavive,” Eleanor said, her voice scolding, “Your promise.”
Eleanor placed a hand on Anavive’s shoulder. Anavive’s expression softened and her eyes shifted to Eleanor’s face, but the pain didn’t lessen.
“What in the world are you talking about?” Anavive said innocently, widening her eyes, “I’m not doing anything.”
Chantal clenched her teeth together and hissed, as acidly as she could, “Stop it.”
Abruptly, the pain that made her head throb disappeared. Chantal straightened up and leaned in close to Cedric. He instinctively wrapped his arm tighter around her waist. She watched as Anavive’s eyebrows furrowed first in concentration and then confusion. Anavive took a cautious step back and her eyes narrowed. Her stance seemed to shift closer to a defensive crouch by the most infinitesimal bit.
“What did you just do?” she asked sharply.
“What are you talking about?” Chantal asked.
“You stopped me,” Anavive said, as if it were plainly obvious. “No one can stop me.”
Chantal crinkled her eyebrows in confusion.
Eleanor smiled kindheartedly, “What she means to say is, no one has ever been able to stop this little gift of Anavive’s. It’s what caused that horrible pain that you felt. It’s a curious little phenomenon, actually, that you were able to stop it. If you don’t mind, would you come over tonight for dinner? We’ll explain everything thoroughly then.”
“Um, sure,” Chantal said, still confused.
“Wonderful,” Eleanor said. “We’ll see you then.”
Chantal nodded and watched them leave. Anavive shot her another severe glance, but this time Chantal felt nothing at all. Anavive turned around, frustrated, and walked swiftly after Eleanor. Chantal bit her lip.
“I don’t think she likes me,” Chantal said, leaning against Cedric’s chest and looking up at his face.
He took a deep breath and looked down at her worried face, “Don’t worry about it. It’s not your fault. Besides, Anavive’s always been a bit bitter.”
“But why would she be mad at me?”
The edge of Cedric’s mouth lifted into a half-smile as he said, “She believes that she’s in love with me. And she tends to get jealous easily. Not unlike someone I know.”
Chantal giggled at his playful teasing. She stared into his crystal-like eyes. Then, a curious thing happened. Like an unseen force was drawing them together, their faces inched closer together, and their lips pressed together for just the slightest fleeting second.
