Chapter 9
–Interlude –
I could feel a change; I could feel it happening, right down to my bones. I had never felt this way before, in any of my numerous past relationships. Suddenly, I was daydreaming about him and doodling his name surrounded by little hearts in my notebooks. It was like my brain had completely turned to mush. Every time I saw him, my heart would skip a beat, or two, or five. When he said my name, I felt like I could faint. When his cold hands brushed against me, just for an accidental second, an electrical feeling buzzed its way through my veins.
What in the world could this be? Surely it wasn’t like anything else I had ever experienced.
Then suddenly, I had the answer. I loved him. It was unexplainable. It was illogical. But it was completely undeniable. Why hadn’t I thought of that earlier? It was so simple. Even though I’d just met him, and I was so young in the eyes of the community, I knew I loved him. I loved him so much that I felt as if my heart could burst. It was so irrational, being with someone who was so dangerous. I knew he could hurt me. I knew that my association with him could potentially lead to my death. But I also knew there was no way I could stop seeing him. I was in far too deep to back out.

Chantal waited anxiously at her desk in English, staring at the clock that showed the minutes ticking by. There was only a five minute passing period between classes, and those few precious minutes were quickly disappearing. And yet, there was still no sign of Cedric. Chantal tapped her fingers on her desk and waited for some sign of his arrival. Suddenly, a burst of laughter rose from the hallway near the room. Normally, this would be nothing out of the ordinary, but the laughter was unmistakable. The three voices were distinct from each other, and still all the same, with that beautiful musical quality that floated easily through the air. Chantal felt a wistful smile appear on her face, but quickly straightened out her expression before anyone had much of a chance to notice.
Chantal watched them more carefully now, absolutely sure that they were vampires, or at least some kind of related supernatural being. Scarlett danced out in front of them as they walked, but turned around to face them again, listening to something Cedric was saying. Everything she did looked like a graceful, continuous dance.
Scarlett looked at him with mockery in her eyes and said, “And whatever would make you think that?”
Cedric’s face broke into a wide smile and he laughed enchantingly, “Eavesdropping is a bad habit, my dear. You really should try to stop.”
Scarlett sighed and put her hands on her thin hips, her smile still planted on her face, “Really, Cedric, I swear you have multiple personality issues sometimes. You’re so moody and you always try to change the subject. Besides, I am quite curious about how lunch went and nothing you say is ever going to make me forget that.”
“Scarlett,” Cedric began, his tone slightly exasperated.
“Oh, be quiet, both of you,” snapped Elliot, only half-joking. “You’re giving me a headache.”
Cedric chuckled and said pointedly, “Alright, it’s settled then, Scarlett. I’ll see you later.”
He turned and swiftly walked through the door to the English room, sitting down in his seat mere seconds before the second bell rang. Chantal looked through the window again, searching for any sign of his siblings, but they were nowhere to be seen. Chantal sighed, giving up, and folded her hands on her desk, waiting for class to start.
Ms. Cooper walked through the door, smiling cheerily and began taking attendance. When she called Cedric’s name she seemed surprised that he was here.
“Ah, Mr. Hale,” she said, happily surprised, “You’re here today. I heard from your morning teachers that you weren’t in class.”
“That is correct,” he responded, “I didn’t get back home until quite late this morning, but I decided that I might as well come to school and not miss any more classes than necessary.”
Ms. Cooper smiled and nodded, marking him as “present” in her grade book. When she finished roll call, Ms. Cooper gave handed him out a timeline for when the writing piece was due. She explained to him that different drafts were due on certain days, and that the days when no homework was assigned were to be used for the assignment. Chantal glanced over her own sheet and saw that their first typed draft was due on Thursday. She sighed. There was no way she would get this done with so much to think about. When Ms. Cooper finally allowed the class to get to work with their partners, Chantal turned to face Cedric. He met her gaze easily, but there was a slightly guarded look on his face.
Chantal tilted her head slightly to the right and stated simply, “I heard you talking to Scarlett just before class.”
The corner of Cedric’s mouth twitched, like he was fighting a smile, but nothing else changed before he said, “And?”
“How did she know what you said?”
Cedric grinned, “Two reasons: that line that you heard her say is one I tend to have to say a lot, and, well, Scarlett is a notoriously good eavesdropper. She tends to like to use that to her advantage.”
“Oh,” she nodded, looking down at her notebook, “But—”
“We should probably get to work,” Cedric said, his expression guarded again.
“Right,” Chantal said, pulling out her written draft. She handed it to Cedric. “Here. I guess you don’t have a draft yet, right?”
“Wrong,” Cedric said, pulling out a few sheets of paper with perfect, slanted writing on them.
Chantal took it and then stared at Cedric in surprise.
“What?” he asked, a confused expression on his face.
“Your handwriting’s, like, perfect,” she stated.
“So?”
She looked at him incredulously, “Is there anything you can’t do?”
Cedric just smiled mysteriously and turned to look at Chantal’s writing.
