Chapter 1
The sound of muffled shouts seeped through the walls of Kittie’s big, ruby red room, drawing her out of sleep. She groaned and rolled over, pulling her fluffy comforter over her head. She squeezed her eyes shut and bit her lip, trying not to cry. A few minutes later, she gave up with a huff, throwing her comforter off of herself and jumping out of her bed. She immediately grabbed the small white remote next to her bed and blasted music from her iPod, trying to drown out the shouts still rising from downstairs. She walked over to her closet and pulled out a pair of torn jeans and a lacy red babydoll camisole. She tossed them both on her bed and was about to change when a light knock on the door caught her attention.
“Yes?” she greeted, opening the door.
She saw her twin brother, Ethan, standing in the doorway. Although the two had been born just minutes apart, they couldn’t look more different. Kittie had inherited all of her mother’s genes while Ethan resembled their father. They hardly looked related at all. Despite these differences, they were among the closest siblings, and they trusted each other with everything.
He raised a pierced eyebrow and asked, “You okay?”
“Yeah,” she said, making a face, “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Mom and dad are fighting again,” he explained, “I just wanted to make sure you’re not bawling or something.”
Kittie smiled, “I’m fine, Ethan, don’t worry about it. Now can I go change? I can’t go to school in my pajamas you know.”
“Sure,” he said, returning her smile before sauntering his way downstairs to the kitchen.
Kittie rolled her eyes and pushed her door shut. She quickly slipped on her outfit and rushed to her private bathroom. It took most of her morning just to get herself in a condition that could be considered presentable. She sighed and started by dragging a big brush through her slightly wavy hair, trying to untangle the mass of knots that always wound up in her hair after a night’s sleep. When she finally was able to yank through all of the tangles in her hair, she slammed her brush down on the bathroom counter. She picked up her hair straightener and straightened her flaming orange hair. She stepped back from the mirror and studied her reflection. She frowned at the deep bags that were forming under her blue eyes from lack of sleep. She quickly applied a thin coat of foundation to her face and put on eyeliner below her eyes only, making the dark circles less noticeable, and dusted her eyelids with a shimmery bronze eyeshadow. She used her brown mascara to define her pale eyelashes and swiped a tube of pink tinted lipgloss over her full lips. She smirked at how she looked now. No one would be able to guess that she had cried herself to sleep.
Kittie ran out of her bathroom, grabbed her backpack, and skipped down the stairs into the kitchen which was, thankfully, quiet. When she walked in, she found Ethan sitting at the table eating a Poptart and her mother, Elizabeth, was just setting Kittie’s breakfast on the table and humming to herself. The scene was a little too cheery and normal for Kittie’s taste, but she said nothing. She quickly ate her breakfast and bolted out the door with Ethan close behind her. She started the car as Ethan got in the passenger side. She drove quickly to school, focusing on the grey road and trying to push all of the negative thoughts out of her mind.
Ethan studied her face and finally, after many long minutes, asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Kittie lied.
Ethan sighed, “Kit, you may be the best liar in the world, but there’s no way you can fool me. I’m your twin. No one knows you better than I do, so don’t even think about making up some excuse again.”
Kittie bit the inside of her cheek, knowing that Ethan was right. There was no way she was going to get away with lying this time. She took a deep breath and whispered, “I cried myself to sleep last night.”
“Ah, I see,” he said understandingly.
They were silent for the rest of the ride there, but it wasn’t an uncomfortable silence that hovered around them, rather a protective shell that kept anything from going wrong. As the car came to a stop in the parking lot, Ethan reached out to put a comforting arm around Kittie’s shoulders. He gave her a light squeeze before he hopped out of the car.
Kittie watched as Ethan slipped easily through groups of students, who parted out of the way for him. His looks were somewhere between emo and skater, but this only helped him become more popular. Although he didn’t care for it too much, he was the envy of all the guys; almost all of the girls would die for a chance to go out with him.
Kittie could see the envy in their eyes as Ethan walked up to Ava, his on-and-off girlfriend, and gave her a quick peck on the cheek. Kittie felt a pinch in her chest. She tried not to remember the heart wrenching break up that she had endured just months ago. Whenever anything seemed to be going right for her, they always found a way to mess themselves up all over again.
Kittie shook her head. She had to get a grip; she could not be a total mess at school. She closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths, and when she opened her eyes again, a pleasant smile surfaced on her face. She grabbed her backpack, ready to assume another day’s charade.
––––––
Kittie let out a breath as she walked out of the Science Lab. She had made it out of another day without slipping up on her perfect performance. She had been able to keep a happy face on all day, even laughed a few times when the situation called for it, but she felt empty. Whoever came up with the phrase “fake it till you make it” obviously had never met her, because Kittie had been faking contentment for a few months now, and it never seemed to feel any more real.
“Kittie!” someone shouted excitedly, drawing her out of her thoughts.
Kittie whipped her head around to see her best friend, Liana running towards her for their weekly gym class together. Since neither of them took an extracurricular sport, they both needed to earn a certain number of Physical Education points by the end of the semester to pass. Liana’s wavy black hair was pulled up into a ponytail which bounced behind her as she ran through the hall. As Liana ran closer to Kittie, a girl with bright pink and black hair ran into Liana, knocking her over.
The girl glared at Liana and hissed, “Watch it!”
She stalked away without another word, and Liana could do nothing but watch. Kittie quickly walked over to help Liana up. Once Liana was on her feet, Kittie made a face.
“Who was that?” she asked, irritated.
Liana dusted herself off and straightened out her ponytail. “She’s new this year. I think her name’s, like, Kai or something. She got kicked out of her old school for cutting class all the time. I heard they found her passed out behind the school one day. Apparently, she had been doing drugs and stuff, so they sent her to, like, rehab or something.”
Kittie raised her eyebrows but said nothing more on the subject. As close as she and Liana were, Kittie couldn’t bear to tell her how much she envied Kai for skipping school all the time. Kittie hated going to school more than anything. Because of school, she had to spend the majority of every day faking happiness. When she got home from school, and let her expression drop, more often than not, her face hurt from pretending to smile all day long.
“Whatever,” Kittie said, “You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Liana assured her, “I just dropped my binder. No big deal.”
Kittie nodded and was about to help Liana pick up her things when she felt a pair of arms wrap around her shoulders. She jumped and turned around to find Ethan burying his head in her shoulder, his eyes puffy and red.
“Oh my god, Ethan,” Kittie said sympathetically, wrapping her arms around his waist, “What happened?”
He shook his head and buried his head deeper into Kittie’s shoulder. Kittie sighed and motioned for Liana to go ahead without her. Kittie led Ethan to a bench just outside the school and held him comfortingly.
“Shhh,” Kittie said soothingly, “Calm down and tell me what’s wrong.”
Ethan sniffed and said softly between sobs, “Ava broke up with me, again. And she says this time she’s sure she won’t ever get back together with me again. I fucking love her. I can’t live without her. What am I supposed to do now?”
He collapsed into Kittie’s lap, still crying, and Kittie softly stroked his straight black hair. She knew that, as always, he wasn’t actually looking for any answers. Right now, he just needed someone to cry to, someone who would listen to all of his complaints and still love him enough to comfort him as Kittie was. And so, they sat, for the rest of the period, until the end of the school day.
