Chapter 7
“I’d like to check out a laptop, please,” Chantal whispered politely.
The librarian nodded and handed her a white Macbook. Chantal took the laptop, walked over to the table her friends were sitting at, and booted it up. As soon as it turned on, she did a quick search on vampires. Amber looked over Chantal’s shoulder and giggled.
“What is it with you and vampires?” she murmured.
Chantal just smiled and rolled her eyes. Everyone knew that Chantal had a strange obsession with anything and everything to do with vampires ever since she had set her hands on Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer. She had always secretly wished that her life could be something like what happened to Bella Swan, but she had never dreamed that her dream would even come close to coming true. Even so, there was no way Cedric could be normal, and he had all of the symptoms of vampirism. His eyes had changed colors dramatically, he was pale and devastatingly beautiful, and his skin was extremely cold. Chantal had felt the chill even through the shirt and blazer she was wearing when he had caught her just moments before.
Chantal scrolled through page after page of descriptions of what a vampire was. All of the websites described them as cold, bloodsucking monsters that woke up in the middle of the night to lure unsuspecting humans to their deaths. Chantal pursed her lips. None of these definitions seemed quite right. None of the Hales seemed intent on killing anyone at school, and they were all awake during the day. She tapped her fingers on the table before typing in “types of vampires” in the search bar. She found scrolled through a few more websites until she found three definitions that seemed likely. She recognized two of them as ones mentioned in Twilight.
Moroii –
Area from/Nationality: Romanian. A living vampire, a good vampire. It can be either male or female; mortal enemy of the Strigoii.
Stregoni Benefici –
Area from/Nationality: Italian. Said to be on the side of goodness, and a mortal enemy of all evil vampires.
Varacolaci –
Area from/Nationality: Romanian. A vampire that ranks among the most powerful of all the undead. They may appear as beautiful, pale humans. It is said to have the ability to cause both lunar and solar eclipses.
She sighed. None of the definitions seemed to match the Hale’s exactly. She felt anxiety begin to well up in the pit of her stomach. She knew that the only way to figure this out was to ask one of them in person. She was both looking forward to and dreading lunch, when she would be able to see Cedric again.
–––
Chantal walked briskly to her table, looking more confident than she felt. She knew that Cedric would be looking for her, but the last thing she wanted to do is wander around the cafeteria and look clueless. She sat down at her table, laughing and talking with her friends, when she felt a chilling feeling creep down her spine. She got the feeling that someone was watching her. Her suspicions were confirmed when Tori peeked over her shoulder and raised her eyebrows.
“Hey, Chantal,” she said, “That Hale guy’s staring at you. You know, the really hot one?”
Chantal rolled her eyes, “Thanks, Tori, that’s super specific. Wish me luck!”
Chantal grabbed an apple and her bottle of Vitamin Water off of her tray and waved goodbye to her friends before skipping off towards Cedric’s table. She became intensely aware of how quiet and still the cafeteria was becoming. It was like someone hit “pause” on a usually bustling scene. It felt like all eyes in the cafeteria were on her. She casually sat down at Cedric’s table, noticing again the tray of untouched food that sat in front of him.
He pushed the tray closer to her and asked, “Are you hungry? You don’t seem to have eaten yet.”
“I’m fine,” she assured him before asking one of the many questions she had for him. “What about you? You always seem to buy a lot of food, but I’ve never seen you eat it. Do you eat at all?”
“Not really.”
“But aren’t you hungry?”
“Not at the moment.”
“But—”
“Chantal, dear, don’t think too hard about it. It’s very simple, really. It’s just something I don’t do unless I absolutely need to,” Cedric explained.
“Oh,” Chantal said, her eyebrows still furrowed in confusion.
“Really, don’t think too much, Chantal,” he said, “It’s such a trivial thing.”
“Right,” Chantal said, checking that question off her list. “Okay, so what made you want to talk to me today? You didn’t seem to like me at all last Wednesday.”
“Ah, yes,” Cedric chuckled, “I’m terribly sorry about my behavior last Wednesday; I wasn’t really myself. But still, the way I acted was inexcusable, and, to be honest, I don’t think I ever gave you a chance. So, I thought today would be the perfect opportunity for me to get to know you a bit better.”
Chantal tilted her head slightly to the side and asked, “So where did you run away to last week anyways?”
“Canada.”
“What?!” she exclaimed. All heads in the cafeteria turned to look at her, wondering what the reason behind her outburst was. She blushed and looked down at her hands, which were folded on the table, until the normal chatter in the cafeteria resumed.
“Oh, relax,” Cedric grinned, “It’s not like I ran away to nowhere. Eleanor has old friends, who I know considerably well, whom I can stay with. And, although Trinity was quite surprised that I showed up so suddenly, they were quite understanding and let me stay with them for a few days while I sorted things out.”
Chantal felt an unfamiliar pang of jealousy when Cedric said that. She had never felt this way before; she had never felt like she was inferior to anyone. And by the way Cedric said Trinity’s name, Chantal got the impression that he admired her. She took a few deep breaths to steady her voice and forced herself to smile.
“Who’s Trinity?” she asked, trying to sound simply curious.
Cedric grinned, “Oh, no need to be jealous, Chantal, she’s merely a friend. It’s not like I love her or anything.”
He winked at her and she felt her heart skip a beat. Chantal looked down at her hands again.
“How did you know that?” she asked softly, slightly embarrassed.
He shrugged, “I’m good at reading faces.”
She nodded, and looked up into his beautiful shining eyes, getting lost in a sea of lavender. Suddenly she remembered something.
All of a sudden, she asked, “Do you wear contacts?”
Cedric made a face, taken aback, and said, slightly hesitantly, “No.”
Chantal nodded again, taking a few deep breaths to steady herself before she asked the big question.
“One more question,” she said, her heart beginning to race in her chest.
“Yes?” he prompted.
She looked at him with wide eyes, “Do you promise not to think I’m crazy or something?”
He smiled, but his eyes remained impassive, “I promise.”
Chantal took a deep breath and asked in a hushed tone, “You’re a… vampire, aren’t you?”
