Part 14

Miyuki helped Chiyeko pile all of her things into a compressible suitcase. It folded easily to the size of a small backpack. All of Chiyeko’s most precious and necessary belongings were packed: a couple of her favorite stuffed animals, her collection of antique jewelry, a warm, puffy jacket, an extra sneak suit, some dehydrated food, a water purifier, and an old worn journal – a rare sight in the high-tech society that they lived in. They had just finished packing when a sharp beeping sound filled the apartment.

Chiyeko’s eyes widened in alarm and she shoved her friends out of her apartment, “That means he’s almost here. Go to Miyuki’s! Now! Remember, if he tries to hurt me in any way, call for help.”

“Right,” her friends said before rushing off.

Just a couple of minutes later, the door to Chiyeko’s apartment burst open, revealing a tall guy. He had black hair swept off to the side of his face and dark brown eyes. He smiled icily at Chiyeko, who now stood at the far end of the room, behind her couch with her bag strapped onto her back. She was trembling in fear, but Ryu ignored it and stepped closer to her.

He pulled her into a hug and whispered, “I’ve missed you, Reiko. I’m so glad you didn’t run away from me this time. But, what’s this? You’ve already packed your bag? You weren’t planning on running away again, were you?”

Chiyeko hesitated, and Ryu said, more menacingly this time, “Were you, Reiko?”

“Do you want me to be honest with you or do you want me to say what you want to hear?” she asked quietly, her voice shaking slightly as she spoke.

Ryu narrowed his eyes in anger and grabbed Chiyeko by her shoulders. He pushed her back against the wall, making her head slam against hard plaster. Chiyeko winced in pain and brought her fingers up to her head. Her hair felt wet and sticky, and when she looked at her fingertips, they were covered with dark red blood. She looked up at Ryu through the tears that were threatening to spill down her cheeks.

Before Chiyeko could say anything, her door burst open once again. Tall men and women in professional looking black suits stood in the doorway. Chiyeko closed her eyes and rested her head back against the wall, leaving a bright red smudge on its white surface. The authority officials stormed into the room and yanked Chiyeko to her feet. They held both Chiyeko and Ryu, strapping energy-cuffs on their wrists. A woman stepped forward, and Chiyeko recognized her as Harukira Kurayami, the head of the Secret Police.

“Ryu, Chiyeko,” Harukira said, “You’re both under arrest.”

Chiyeko widened her eyes in shock, “What? Why? I didn’t do anything wrong!”

“We have evidence that you did,” Harukira explained. “As I told you, I’ve been doing a bit of research about you, Chiyeko, and I’ve found some very interesting information about you. For example, that little incident in Osaka just over three years ago? Yes, Chiyeko, I know all about that. I know what you did, and I don’t intend to let you get away again.”

Chiyeko’s body began quaking again. She was about to drop to her knees and beg for mercy when she noticed something no one else had. A silent, slender figure slipped into the room, the scales on their sneak suit blending perfectly with the white walls of the apartment. Chiyeko heard her skin-com buzz and someone’s quiet voice whispered “Don’t move. Act natural. I’ll get you out of here. I promise.”

Chiyeko did as she was told and kept her eyes focused straight ahead of her, at the wolf-like face of Harukira. She had recognized the quiet voice of Miyuki and it comforted her immensely. Chiyeko flinched as she felt someone’s hand on her wrists, which were bound behind her back.

“Relax,” Miyuki assured her, “It’s just me.”

Chiyeko took a deep breath to calm her nerves, and a moment later, she felt her cuffs pop open. She waited for the loud thunk it would make when it dropped, but Miyuki caught it before it had a chance to hit the floor.

“Okay, the window in your room is open. When I tell you to, make a run for it, and jump. Don’t worry; someone will be there to catch you,” Miyuki instructed.

Miyuki slithered along the wall silently, making her way slowly to the other end of the room. She then dropped a small, but not too dangerous, jar of exploding nanos. The jar burst open, releasing tiny, silver explosives all over the floor. Just a split second later, they went off, causing quite a bit of confusion in the room. No one had even suspected that Miyuki had sneaked into the room.

“Now!” she whispered to Chiyeko. “I’ll be right behind you.”

Chiyeko fled to her room, which was right through the door behind her. She saw that the window above her bed had been shattered open for her to escape. She climbed up and stuck her head out. It was a long fall, but Chiyeko knew that even death was better than getting caught by Harukira and her troop. So, she took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and jumped.
