Part 13
As Chiyeko trembled in fear, Kimika’s confusion grew. This was so unlike Chiyeko. Chiyeko was supposed to be the fearless mastermind behind every one of their plans. Even in life or death situations, Chiyeko had always remained confident. So why was she so scared now? Who was Reiko? And who was sending all of these pings?
She looked around and she saw that Miyuki and Manami’s expressions mirrored her own. The only face in the room that was still calm and collected was Tomoaki’s. He had a supportive arm around Chiyeko’s narrow waist and was murmuring quietly to her. Chiyeko took several shaky breaths to calm herself. When she appeared to be more composed, Kimika finally spoke the questions that were bursting out of her.
“Okay,” Kimika said. “You’ve got a lot of explaining to do.”
“Well, what do you want to know?” asked Chiyeko with a guilty expression on her face.
“First of all, who is ‘Reiko’?” Kimika questioned.
“Um,” Chiyeko said quietly, “I’m Reiko. Or I was, until I had to leave my hometown of Osaka three years ago.”
“Right,” Kimika prompted, “now elaborate…”
Chiyeko took a deep breath and recalled the story she never wanted to think about, “Okay, so over three years ago, when I lived in Osaka, I was… in a relationship with this guy… Ryu, and he was really sweet at first, but after a while he got… obsessive. But I was really afraid to break up with him because, in the past, he had been violent when he got angry. So, I just tried to avoid him as much as possible. But, unfortunately, one of my friends, a Sweet, told him that I didn’t really like him anymore. So, he got extremely angry… and… um… he… uh… killed everyone who was close to me. And, since the authorities know everything, they knew that an unbelievably high number of people had… died… in a very short period of time. So, they came to find us, and, well, I was really just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I had been, um, holding my little sister in my arms, so I had blood all over my hands and clothes. When the authorities arrived, they assumed that I was responsible for the murders. So, through a long and confusing chain of events that I can barely comprehend, I escaped, changed my name, and came here. I thought that surely in a city this big neither he nor the authorities would be able to find me. Unfortunately, I seem to have been wrong.”
Kimika, Miyuki, and Manami stared at Chiyeko in shock. They had expected something big, but nothing like this. After a few moments of stunned silence, Kimika, being the one who had been through the most hardship, was the first to recover. She took a second to phrase her next question delicately.
“So, if Ryu is actually coming,” Kimika said tentatively, “then what are you going to do?”
“The same thing as last time: I’ll run away,” Chiyeko’s voice was surer than she actually was.
“And, what should we do?” Manami asked gently.
“Stay out of the way, go to Miyuki’s apartment. She’s the quietest of all of us, so she’s the least well known. I don’t want you guys to get hurt. However, I want you to keep an eye on him, and if he tries to hurt me, call for help, okay?”
“Okay,” the three girls said uncertainly.
“You too,” Chiyeko said to Tomoaki. “He’ll probably try to kill you.”
“Don’t worry,” Tomoaki assured her, “I’ll stay out of the way. I promise.”
Chiyeko took a deep breath, and said, “Okay, good.”
She nodded twice and then flicked her fingers. Her wall-screen flickered and changed, erasing all of the pings that Ryu had sent. The screen quickly shifted and showed a number of complicated looking windows. She scrolled through a few, typed some codes into some and then entered a long, complicated string of letters, numbers, and symbols. Suddenly, the screen showed a large map with two dots. One of them was deep blue and the other was a blinking bright red one. The red dot seemed to be slowly moving closer and closer to the blue one. Chiyeko pursed her lips in thought while the others looked on in confusion.
Chiyeko nodded and said, “Seven hours.”
“What?” Kimika asked, raising her eyebrows.
“Seven hours,” Chiyeko repeated, “at the most, until Ryu gets here. I have seven hours to get everything together and leave.”
“What?!” everyone shouted.
“You’re leaving?” Manami asked in disbelief.
“Yup,” Chiyeko said, her voice breaking, “I have to.”
