Part 12
Chiyeko squinted, trying to see in the smoky air. Someone’s firm hand grabbed her arm and dragged her down a long hallway. After what seemed like many suspense-filled hours, Chiyeko felt the around her change. She stepped out of the large building and into the nighttime hillside. She took a deep breath of the clear, crisp air and was about to take another step forward when the hand that pulled her outside held her back against the cement wall. She opened her mouth to speak when the hand clapped over her mouth.
“Shhh,” Tomoaki whispered. “Be quiet or they’ll catch us.”
He reached into his pocked and took out a small metal square, a requisitioned decoding device. He really had thought of everything. He took Chiyeko’s hands and placed the little machine on the cuffs that chained her wrists together. In a matter of seconds, the cuffs popped off, dropped to the ground, and quickly decomposed in the man-made soil. Tomoaki did the same to the other three girls before he spoke.
“Are you guys wearing the sneak suits like I told you to?” he asked Chiyeko.
She nodded and the girls quickly stripped down to only their plain black, form-fitting sneak suits. They quickly pulled on their hoods, tucking their hair underneath, turned their sneak suits on, and the high-tech scales shifted to blend into the grey wall. Chiyeko flicked on her skin-com so they could speak quietly to each other and still not get heard.
Tomoaki flicked his wrist and called the three hoverboards to him. Three was the more that he could ride on the way there without losing one of them. Everyone quickly paired up, leaving Kimika, who preferred to be on her own, on her board alone. Chiyeko stood in front of Tomoaki with her arms spread out wide to maintain her balance. She could feel Tomoaki’s arms securely wrapped around her waist, making her tense body finally relax for the first time all night.
“How did you find us?” Manami’s curious voice asked through the skin-com. “No one in the city knows where that building is. No one even knows it actually exists.”
Tomoaki smiled, “It’s simple. Chiyeko sent me a ping.”
“Oh, no way!” exclaimed Manami excitedly. “But… how? We had our hands chained up.”
“I found a way,” Chiyeko explained. “I always do.”
The girls flew quietly back into the city limits and back to their own apartments to rest after their long and eventful night. Tomoaki flew with Chiyeko back to her apartment. Where they fell asleep wrapped in each others arms.

[Wake up, Chiyeko. Miyuki, Kimika, and Manami are here.]
A fist banged against the outside of the door of Chiyeko’s apartment, and a voice yelled, “Chiyeko! Chiyeko! Chiyeko! Let us in! This is important!”
[Wake up, Chiyeko. Miyuki, Kimika, and Manami are here.]
The banging continued and shouting continued, until, after many long minutes, the noise finally broke through the deep layer of sleep that Chiyeko was immersed in. Chiyeko groaned and forced herself to rise to a sitting position.
She yawned and said sleepily, “Let them in, please.”
“Chiyeko, where are you?” one of the girls asked.
“I’m in here,” Chiyeko slurred groggily, “in my room.”
Miyuki, Kimika, and Manami burst into Chiyeko’s room with excited smiles on their faces. Chiyeko rubbed her eyes and blinked slowly a few times, trying to clear the sleep from her head. She sighed and leaned against Tomoaki, who was now sitting with his back propped up against the headboard of the bed.
“What is it?” she asked.
Miyuki grinned enthusiastically and exclaimed, “Oh my god, Chiyeko, you won’t believe this!”
“What?” Chiyeko demanded, beginning to feel irritated.
Miyuki giggled, “You’re all over the news! We all are!”
“WHAT?!” yelled Chiyeko once again, her eyes blazing angrily.
Kimika rolled her eyes, “Oh, chill, Chiyeko. It’s really not that big of a deal. What’s the point of being such a no one anyways?”
Chiyeko narrowed her eyes and said bitterly, “The point is, Kimika, that the more ‘famous’ I get, the more people will know about me. And the more people know about me, the more dangerous it gets. It may just get to the point where I may have to escape. Again. Being famous isn’t always a good thing.”
Ping! [Chiyeko, you’ve received a ping. Would you like to open it?]
“Not now,” Chiyeko said, starting to get a horrible feeling in the pit of her stomach. He’s going to find me again. I just know it.
Ping! [Chiyeko, you’ve received another ping. Would you like to open it?]
“Not now,” Chiyeko said, just a little more forcefully. The awful feeling was starting to grow.
Ping! Ping! [Chiyeko, you’ve received two more pings. Would you like to open them?]
“Okay, fine!” Chiyeko spoke more confidently than she felt.
Chiyeko’s wall-screen flickered to life. A plain white message with simple black lettering appeared.
Reiko. I know you’re in Tokyo. You can’t hide from me anymore.
Kimika crinkled her eyebrows, “Who is Reiko? We don’t know anyone named that.”
“Shhh,” Chiyeko shushed her as the next message appeared on the screen.
Reiko. Don’t run from me. I won’t hurt you. I never would. You know that. Please don’t run away from me again.
Chiyeko’s heart pounded loudly in her chest and it became hard for her to breath.
Why won’t you respond to my messages? Are you scared, Reiko? Don’t be. I would never do anything to upset you.
Chiyeko’s vision blurred as the last message loaded on the screen.
I love you, Reiko, and there’s nothing you can do about it. I will find you. Trust me.
He did find her. She would have to run away. Leave all of her friends behind. Start all over in a new city. Again. The only question was, where could she run to?
