Part 9
“Hey, where’s Chiyeko?” Kimika asked, while scrolling through another page of the magazine she was looking at. She was lying on her bed with Miyuki and Manami. They were waiting for Chiyeko to arrive before they could go to the annual Christmas bash at Sachi Towers.
Miyuki, who was on the floor, propped her legs up against the side of the bed and said lazily, “I think she’s still out with Tomoaki. She said they were going hover boarding today.”
It had been just a little more than a month since Chiyeko and Tomoaki had met, and now, the two were inseparable. Every day, they had gotten closer and closer, and they did everything together.
“Well, she better get here soon,” Kimika complained, “because if she doesn’t I’m going to—”
[Kimika, Chiyeko is here.]
Kimika sighed, “Let her in.”
Chiyeko burst through the door, her arms filled with bags. Each bag was overflowing with things that had obviously been requisitioned: paper thin body masks, extra lifters since the girls’ lifters had been confiscated a week ago, and form-fitting sneak suits. In one of the smaller bags, there were various sparkly, old-fashioned masquerade masks.
Kimika wrinkled her nose and pointed at the masks and asked, “Why did you bring those?”
Chiyeko smiled, “Well, we always seem to need more disguise than we have with us, and since we’re going to the Holiday Black Tie event, I thought we could wear masquerade masks.”
Manami giggled, and reached her arm out to grab a mask. “Let’s do it. It is a holiday party after all. We should have a little fun!”
Manami pulled out a beautiful mask speckled with pink rhinestones. It had many pink feathers clustered around one end that swayed when she walked. Manami reached into the bag and pulled out three more masks, one navy blue, one violet and one sunset orange. All four masks were matching and in the four girls’ signature colors.
Thirty minutes later, after selecting outfits, applying extensive amounts of makeup, and putting on all of the requisitioned items, the girls were ready and barely recognizable. Each looked exactly like a Sweet, which meant that they could slip easily through security.
Kimika smiled, “This is definitely our best disguise yet. Where did you get this stuff? The authorities wouldn’t let us have things like this. They hate us.”
“Tomoaki requisitioned them for us,” Chiyeko explained, putting her mask on. “Since he’s one of the city’s elite, he’s allowed to have anything he wants.”
“I’m really starting to like your boyfriend,” Kimika said. “He’s really useful sometimes.”
Chiyeko giggled. “Okay, now remember, as soon as you leave Sachi Towers, you absolutely must dispose of your dress and turn your sneak suit on. Ever since the Costume Bash, the security has been tighter than ever, making it that much more important that we get away safely. If they catch us again, I don’t know what they’ll do to us.”
“What exactly are we doing again? If I remember correctly, it’s much more than just crashing this party,” Manami asked.
Chiyeko sighed, slightly annoyed, and told the girls the plan again, with a sharp edge in her voice, “Of course, we need to crash this party, but this time, it’s way more important that just that. The authorities are ready to almost kill us if we get caught again. The Towers still have security cams that are independent of the Towers’ main power grid, which we will need to deactivate before we can do anything. Once those are gone, we can plant and set off all of the safety sparklers in the building, which should cause sufficient confusion in the party. We will also have some ‘inside help’. Tomoaki has a few things that he will set up within Sachi Towers before the party starts. They are placed in the fuse boxes in the Towers. That way, on the click of a button, we can shut off the power and get away in the dark. Got it?”
“Yup,” the girls said, at slightly different times.
Kimika noticed that Chiyeko still looked uneasy and reassured her, “Come on Chiyeko, think about it. There’s no way we can get caught tonight. No one will recognize us; I can hardly recognize myself. Just relax. We can totally do this.”
Chiyeko sighed, “I hope you’re right because I absolutely cannot get caught.”
“You?” Kimika asked, making a face.
“Yes, me,” Chiyeko said. “The authorities already hate me, and if I get caught again, they’ll have to do an inspection and they’ll find out who I am.”
“What?” Kimika asked, still confused.
Chiyeko sighed, “Never mind, let’s just go. And, above all, don’t get caught.”
