Part 8
“Sorry about my friends,” Chiyeko smiled weakly, sitting down on a couch. “They’re kind of obnoxious sometimes.”
“It’s okay,” Tomoaki assured her, “I have friends just like that.”
“So how did you find me?” Chiyeko asked. “To the city, I’m nobody. No one I’ve ever met has even heard of me.”
“Well, I saw you and that other girl here last night. You know, at the party. You ran right past me, but I don’t think you really saw me. Anyways, as you and your friend ran away, the alarm went off because the ice skating rink had been broken and then everyone started freaking out. I was able to find out that four girls had crashed our party, something that no one else in the city would ever even think of. That’s when I knew I had to find you. So, that night when I got home, I did a quick search on the breaking of that ice rink, and I found out that a girl named Manami was spotted throwing what looked like a jar of exploding nanos at the ice skating rink and then jumping off of the roof of Aiko Mansion. So, I pinged her and she told me that she’d bring you here this morning… I thought you knew.”
Chiyeko sighed and mumbled, “So we did get caught after all. I thought we had gotten away with it this time. I wonder why I didn’t know about this.”
“What do you mean, ‘this time’?” Tomoaki raised his eyebrows. “You mean you’ve done things like this before?”
“Of course,” Chiyeko nodded. “We crash every big party of the year.”
“Seriously? Is that all you guys do?”
“It’s pretty much all I do, but the others go off on senseless adventures during the day.”
“You’re not the nicest girl in the world, are you? Most girls from around here wouldn’t call their best friends ‘senseless’.”
Chiyeko giggled, “That’s because I’m not from around here.”
“What do you mean?” Tomoaki made a face. “Everyone stays in their home city. That’s like a rule.”
“Well, I’m not exactly a goody-goody girl who always follows rules,” Chiyeko said. “And besides, I had to run away. It was either run away or live the rest of my life in prison.”
“What do you mean?” Tomoaki asked again, shocked. “The authorities were going to send you to prison? What did you do?”
“Absolutely nothing, but I was still blamed for everything. So, I had to run away in order to live my life how I pleased.”
“But, what happened?”
“It’s a long story,” Chiyeko said, unsure.
“I’m listening,” Tomoaki said encouragingly.
So, within the next hour that they spent together, Chiyeko told Tomoaki every last detail of her adventures. Everything, from start to finish, she didn’t leave one single thing out. This was so unlike her to tell a complete stranger everything about her life, but there was something about Tomoaki that made her feel comfortable.
The entire time while Chiyeko was speaking, Tomoaki listened carefully. When Chiyeko was finished, she crossed her arms over her chest and looked down at the floor, suddenly embarrassed.
I can’t believe I just told him all that, Chiyeko scolded herself. I hardly even know this guy!
Tomoaki bent his head down so he could look her in the eye. “Hey, are you okay?” he asked. “You don’t look so good. Is something wrong?”
Chiyeko looked up at his dark brown eyes with a sad expression on her face. She smiled, wondering why she had ever doubted her trust for him.
“I’m fine,” Chiyeko said, “it’s just that most of those memories are really, really bad ones. I usually try to forget those things happened.”
He placed his hand on her knee reassuringly and said, “Well, you can forget about it all over again. Come on, let’s go on a walk.”
He held his hand out for her to take and she stared at him, unsure of what to do. Her past experiences were telling her not to go. They were telling her that this was a bad idea. But then again, things got way out of hand last time, and the chances of that happening again were extremely low. So, Chiyeko smiled and took his hand, deciding that for once in three years, she would take the opportunity that life gave her.
