Part 5
“What’s wrong, Chiyeko? Are you afraid of falling in love?”
The question repeated itself over and over again in Chiyeko’s head as her heart began to race. Her breaths became shallow and a thin layer of sweat formed on her forehead. She became dizzy as unwanted memories crept back into her mind. Several moments passed before she spoke.
“It’s not that I’m really afraid,” Chiyeko said softly, her voice almost a whisper, “it’s just that I’ve had some really bad experiences with love. That’s all.”
Manami’s expression softened and she said sympathetically, “Do you want to talk about it? It’ll probably make you feel better.”
Chiyeko sighed and sat down, resting her head in her hands. Then she took a deep breath and said, “Honestly, I don’t want to talk about it. At all.”
Kimika put her hand on Chiyeko’s shoulder and said softly, “Come on, Chiyeko. You know you can trust us.”
Chiyeko’s head jerked up and her eyes flicked with anger. “I said I don’t want to talk about it! So, leave me alone!”
Chiyeko got up and stormed out of the room. She stomped over to her room and her door slammed shut. A moment later, the muffled sounds of sobs seeped through the walls and reached the other girls.
Kimika looked in the direction of Chiyeko’s bedroom and said, “I’ll get her. It’s my fault that she’s crying, I should go comfort her. You guys get some champagne or something. We all need to get out of this glum mood and celebrate.”
Kimika walked gracefully over to the door of Chiyeko’s bedroom and knocked lightly on the door.
“Chiyeko?” Kimika said softly, gently. “Can you open the door? Please, Chiyeko. Today’s a happy day. We should be celebrating, not sulking.”
The door slid open, and Kimika walked into the bedroom. It was a modestly sized room with a large wall-screen occupying an entire wall of the room. On the opposite side of the room, a queen sized bed sat below a window pointed towards the center of the city. The bedroom had a bathroom, complete with a bathroom spa, which was connected to the bedroom by a sliding door which was opposite to the main door. The room was usually organized in a very simple and clean manner, but now, various colorful pillows and stuffed animals were strewn on the floor and Chiyeko had collapsed on her bed, making her dark blue duvet crinkled.
Kimika walked over to Chiyeko’s bed and sat on the edge of it. She brushed Chiyeko’s hair off of Chiyeko’s face, and looked her in the eye. Chiyeko’s normally ice blue eyes looked aqua and glassy through the tears that were streaming down her cheeks.
Kimika smiled and said, “Chiyeko, I’m sorry if I upset you, I really am. I just wanted to see if there was any way any of us could help you feel better. That’s all.”
Chiyeko sat up and wiped her tears off of her cheeks. She took a deep breath and said softly, “It’s alright. I was just overreacting. I’ve just been really out of it lately.”
Ten minutes later, Chiyeko and Kimika walked out of the room, arm in arm. Manami and Miyuki smiled at them and held two glasses of champagne for them. Chiyeko and Kimika each took a glass and smiled. Glasses clinked together and the celebration began.
