In a Perfect World

I looked at the red numbers on my clock. 8:07 pm. Damn! I was supposed to call Masao an hour ago!
I sighed and looked at my cell phone, which was sitting right beside my laptop. I looked back towards my laptop screen and clicked on “Inbox” to check my email for what seemed like the thousandth time in a minute. I felt my shoulders sag as the screen showed that I had no new messages. I sighed and rolled over onto my side. I let my thoughts wander for a second before they were interrupted by a vibrating sound. I blinked and realized it was my phone. I checked the screen, and it read “Masao – Cell”. I felt a smile creep onto my face as I flipped open my phone and brought it to my ear.
“Hello?” I said cheerfully.
“Hey, Dita. It’s Masao,” He said, like he always did when he called me. But something was different. Something seemed out of place. His voice sounded more nervous, more strained than usual, as if he was hiding something. I quickly brushed that thought aside. He couldn’t be hiding something… could he?
“Hey, Masao,” I replied, as cheerily as ever, “what’s up?”
“Um, I’m just wondering… do we have any Science homework?” he asked. I smiled. He always seemed to forget about homework.
“I don’t think so,” I thought for a second. “Because Ms. Pelgor said she forgot to print out the worksheet, so she said we don’t have any homework tonight, remember?”
“Right…” he paused for a moment. Something didn’t seem right. There was something he wasn’t telling me. I was sure of it.
“Dita?” he finally said.
“Mm-hmm?” I said absently.
He took a deep breath and said, “I’m gonna have to break up with you.”

*Bing!*
Imogen looked up from her homework, wondering where that sound had come from. A moment later, she realized that it had come from her computer; someone had sent her an email. She walked over to her computer and clicked on Internet Explorer. As soon as she checked her email, she saw that she indeed had one new message. She clicked it and it read:
From: “Dita”
To: “Imogen”
Subject: Re: omg! how FEROSH is this?

omg! i have something über important to tell you… but it’s way to “classified” to be by email…
Imogen looked up from the computer screen. Nothing was too “classified” to be by email. This had to be bad. Really bad.
