"What about baby sharks?"

That simple question seemed to linger in the cool ocean air as the three of us let our thoughts wander. Suddenly, as if a small, quiet voice had whispered it to us, an idea began to form. This idea became a realization as my twelve-year-old eyes widened, suddenly understanding what a simple, small question had done. I understood that this seemingly harmless question had stirred up a fear that none of us had wanted to acknowledge.

We all looked at each other for a split second, out eyes shouting, "Run!" before shrill screams pierced the air. We started running, trying to go as fast as we could possibly go, despite the fact that the murky water came up to our chins. As this happened, the five people who were still sitting on the warm, dry sand looked up at us. They looked up at us lazily, as if they were caught in a daze, questioning what was worth screaming so loud about. What they saw was three girls running through the slate blue bay water of Crab Cove. Their eyes seemed to mock us by saying, "You're crazy!"

This fear, a fear of being attacked, no matter how silly it was, felt so real to me at the moment. All I could think about was the possibility of us getting attacked by sharks. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, I could feel goose bumps forming on my arms, and my breaths became short and shallow. Somewhere between the beginning of this fear, far out in the bay, and the time when we reached the beach, I realized, we all realized, that we were being very foolish. That's when I let a little giggle ripple out onto the waves and disappear into the whisper of the ocean current.

Before long, we were all laughing, which made it hard to run through the chilly, salty water. No longer afraid, but still eager to get to dry land, we continued running, with the blue-grey water splashing all around us. I tripped on various rocks and the current pulled me this way and that. The wind whipped my hair up around my face and into my eyes, making running even harder. It felt like I would never make it to the sandy, yellow beach. Every wobbly step I took seemed to bring me no closer to land than I was before. I could feel my feet sinking into the slimy, squishy sand, slowing me down. I felt like a snail, slowly inching my way to my destination, but getting nowhere at the same time. However, I was happy and calm once again, my heart no longer frightened, and it felt like it was truly summer vacation again.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, we had made it. We all collapsed into an exhausted heap of giggles. My fingertips and toes were still tingling from the cold water and the excitement. I could still taste the salty water in my mouth and feel the pull of the ocean, urging me to go the wrong way.

After all that had just happened, it felt good to let the warm summer sun and the cool ocean breeze dry me off; to just lie there on the soft sand, without a care in the world. Our laughter had slowly died away, and I was now lying with my back on the warm sand, staring up at the endless sky. My stomach hurt from laughing so much and I was still cold from the chilly bay water, but I was happy. That fear that had seemed like such a big deal just moments ago was now a thing of the past, and it was nice to lie on the beach. It was nice to just stare at the big blue cloudless sky and just let the world pass by.

This is a vignette I wrote for English. It's about an event that actually happened. Please tell me what you think!
