Prologue
Adora walked down a dark alleyway, stroking the gun that sat in her holster. “Come out, Come out wherever you are.” Adora pushed back her leather jacket, exposing her two desert eagle handguns. Adora looked up “I see you…” pulling out the guns pointing them to the sky. “Bam…” Adora fired at the sky in a flash of light and bullets falling to the ground. “Gotcha”—Said Adora “Ughhh” a lifeless body came crashing to the ground, and hit the cold grey concrete in a sickening sound of bones breaking and snapping.
Adora walked over to the body, desert eagles in hand, and knelt down by it. “That wasn’t so bad now was it?” Suddenly the body twitched, and sat up looking at Adora through a crimson mask. “But we both know that it couldn’t have killed you.” She reached inside her leather trench coat. “Go ahead and kill me! But you will never kill the clan!” the body spat out. Adora looked at the body in dismay. “We’ll see about that.” She grinned and brought out a crossbow.
She brought out a wooden stake and began to load the crossbow with it, taking her time. When she was done, she pointed it at the body’s head, and slowly moved it down to the heart.
“Do it!!!” – The body screamed at her “Do it now, shoot! End Me! End Me! It’ll be that last thing you ever do!”
Adora smirked, “As you wish,” She pulled the trigger, releasing the stake. The stake punctured his chest, going through one end and coming out through another. It penetrated the heart and ended the life… the life of one that was neither living nor dead.
Adora shook her head as the body turned to dust and vanished into the night. “Goodnight Phil.” She placed the gun back in the holster and began to walk away. She looked back to the body. “To think,” – She thought -- “He once had a life and a story to tell. He once had something to die for.” Adora turned away biting her lips. “Of course that was about 40338 years ago.”
Adora walked into the darkness, with a grin stretching across his face.
Chapter 1:
It all happened so fast, the night I turned, and it was only a few months ago, October 6 of 2034.
I became one.
It had happened, and “It” was now my life.
It was a girl. The girl that I needed so badly to find. The girl that I wanted to see. The girl that changed me, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Her name was Raelynn. The night she changed me, I constantly found myself thinking of her. Every waking moment she was in my head, in my dreams, in my heart. I would scream her name to ease the pain, but all in vein. She never came, never heard, never nothing! All that I could do at the time was hope; Hope that I would one day see her again.
And that day was today.
I walked through the subway chain, gripping a paper in my hand. I held it tight every time someone would get close to me. That paper meant so much to me, and losing the paper would mean losing every answer I would ever get to my undying questions. As the subway pulled up, I opened the paper and read it one more time. “1329 Clover Lane” I read to myself “I guess that’s the place” I clutched the paper and slipped it into the inside pocket of my leather trench coat. I walked steadily to the subway, and entered, scanning for a free seat.
I sat on the nearest seat waiting for the departure. I examined the people on the subway, trying to figure out where these people came from.
That’s when I noticed her. Sitting but only a few seats away. “That’s her.” I whispered to myself. I looked around, and got up, pretending to wipe my jacket. I turned slightly to get a good look at her. “That’s definitely her.” I did this a few more times to confirm that it was indeed her.
I finally built up the courage to go up and get a seat near her. Lucky for me, both seats on either side of her were empty. I approached her slowly and was about to open my mouth to say something, but…
“I was wondering how long it would take you to come over.” I raised my eyebrow and sat next to her. “How did you know I was on here?” She gave me this look, and judging from the expression she was a bit shocked. “Don’t you mean how did I NOT know you were on here?” – She smiled widely “I knew you were around before you even set foot in this train.”
I looked her in the eye, confused. As if reading my mind, “I know it must sound confusing to you, but don’t worry with time you’ll be able to control it.”
“Why me?” I asked bluntly.
Her smile died down, and she leaned in closer to me, apparently not wanting anyone to hear. “Because we need you.” She answered.
At that point my jaw dropped, and I just had to keep asking questions.
It was then that the subway came to a stop.
Raelynn smiled at me, and stood up. “This is my stop.” I looked at her in dismay, with a frown growing on my face. “Will I ever see you again?” She grabbed her bag and looked me dead in the eye. “Sooner than you think.” – she paused, her eyes gleaming under the dim lit subway car “Goodbye Adam.” She then departed from the bus, and from me, leaving the subway train.
The rest of the trip was I kept looking to the door hoping that she would come back and answer my questions, hoping that she could come with me again.
But she didn’t.
As the Subway train pulled up to its next stop, a sharp sensation penetrated the back of my head. It pulsed as if something sharp had been stuck in and was now cutting through. I held the back of my head, and groaned. And as fast as it came, it had gone away. I sat up relieved, and met the eyes of several passengers who were looking at me oddly.
I smiled nervously, and got up as soon as the subway stopped. I looked around and smiled once again, this time waving my hand.
And that’s when I saw him, standing in the back, detached from the others. His eyes were light blue and his hair slick back. And he was looking me right in the eye. “What a creep.” I thought to myself. That’s when He smiled at me. His cold blue eyes glistening and his smile baffled me. It was as if he knew who I was.
I walked out, and quickly maneuvered my way through the thick crowd of people waiting to get inside the train. I got to the stairwell, and ran up quickly, so I could get out of there. From there on, all I had to do was find the address that was given to me.
It was a dark night; I only navigated myself by the light of the street lamps… The safest light I knew. It sometimes astounded me how something so simple like sunlight, could end me so easily. I walked slowly on the sidewalk looking out for the address.
I walked and walked, and all the while I couldn’t stop thinking of Raelynn. I kept picturing her in my head, just a still image of her eyes, her face, and her smile, which never went away. But mostly, I kept thinking about what she had told me. “What did she mean by ‘we need you’?” I thought to myself. “Why does she need me?” and “Who’s ‘they’?” all these questions brewed in my mind, and from those questions came more questions, and then more from those questions, and then more, and some more, more, more, more.
It began to drive me mad.
I stopped for a minute, breathing heavily; I held up the paper and looked at it under the street lamp. “1329 Clover Lane.” I read aloud, looking to the apartment complex that stood directly to the side of me.
It was the place.
I looked at the structure, with its broken windows, dim lights, and corroding walls. Mold had begun to infest the corners and the in between the bricks. Grime had built up, giving the building a greenish glow. The metal gates had begun to rust after years of just standing there. Even the address that had probably been shiny once upon a time, were now crooked and chipped and discolored. Everything seemed to have been old, used, and dirty; which is why the walkway stood out so much.
I didn’t get why the walkway was so perfect compared to the rest of the building. The marble walkway was clean and shiny, and looked as if it were taken care of quite frequently, unlike the rest of the house that is.
It almost made me not want to set foot upon it. I had to get over that, and I walked along it, pushing past the doors and taking step into the dark entry room. “You’d think they’d at least take care of the inside.” I mumbled to myself.
I walked to the elevator, and stood there. It had struck me that I didn’t know what floor this person’s room was on, or the room for that matter. My hand froze above the floor buttons, trying to pick one. It was as if my hand had a mind of its own, it immediately picked a button, pressing the button to the 4th floor.
“What the hell?” I thought to myself as the elevator began to go up.
I reached the floor and turned the corner and stopped in front of a random door. The strange thing is, somehow I knew this was the room. I turned the doorknob and entered uninvited.
“I’ve been waiting for you.” Came a voice from the dark. I walked over cautiously. The voice was that of a girl probably about 20 years old. “Well I’m here now, and I want answers.” The shadowy figure then stood from out of the dark, her eyes glowing in the dark room. “And I will provide those answers.” – She stepped out of the dark revealing herself to be a young girl with big blue eyes, and golden brown hair which flowed and moved this way and that as she stood.
She wore what seemed to be a leather jacket with tight black jeans. She looked pretty much like a young 20-year-old girl.
“You’re supposed to give me answers?” I looked at her quizzically, wondering how a girl so young could possibly know such information. “I know I look you Adam But—“How do you know my name?” I asked. She looked at me, her expression was solemn. “My name is Adora, and I am here to give you the information you seek. Do you want it or not?” I looked into her eyes, seeing how serious she was. “Yes… I want answers.”
She smiled slightly and showed me to a seat.
“Well were should we begin.”
The answers I got that night were disturbing, but helpful. She answered all of my questions patiently, and kindly, and somehow she knew all the answers, despite her apparent young age. She made me understand what I was, what I do, what I had become, and why they needed me. I sat their unblinking, and stood still.
She had just put a ton of weight on me. How was I supposed to be the great descendant of some great vampire hunter, and if this was so? Why had I become one?
The answer came with the sound of the door opening.
Adora and I turned swiftly, as three people came in and stood there. “They’re here, we must leave.” Said one of the three. “Come, we must go!” Adora said to me. She grabbed my hand as we left the building.
We walked over the walkway, to a black car parked outside in front of the gate. I walked in and sat next to Adora. But what shocked me the most was that Raelynn was there.
My jaw dropped yet again. “Raelynn? You’re a part of this too?” She smiled nervously and touched me on the shoulder. “Unfortunately, yes, I am.” The car started and the ride began. I turned to Raelynn again, “Who are these people?” She smiled to me and began to introduce me to each. “This right here, is Daren.” The driver was a pretty athletic guy. He wore the same leather jacket as Adora, come to think of it; everyone wore that same leather jacket. “You’ve already met Adora, and you know who I am, so I’m sure those no need for us to introduce ourselves.” She looked to the other three guys, and coughed slightly. “Guys?” The driver looked at me through the review mirror, “I’m Darren.” He said sarcastically. Raelynn then looked to the others so they could do the same.
-“I’m Scotty.”
-“And I’m Brett.”
I stared at both as they introduced themselves. I smiled nervously and began to introduce myself when…
SCREEECCHHH!!!!
The sound of something scratching the car came to my ear.
The others heard it too. Brett and Scotty then took two handguns, and stuck their heads out the windows quickly as to find the source of the scratching. I looked through the back window and saw it.
It was a man, with a dark trench coat, and slick black hair; the same man from the subway. The only difference this time was that he was about 12 ft in the air, flying! He had what appeared to be giant back wings.
Just when it seemed things couldn’t get any worse, four more came flying out.
Brett and Scotty opened fire, trying to shoot down the fiends.
But they kept dodging, swooping side to side to avoid being shot. “Who are these guys!” I asked under the noise of the guns firing. Adora looked at me, and put her hand on my shoulder. “They are the enemy. They want to turn the whole world into vampires. They want nothing more than to be the supreme race. And to do that, it means killing or turning anyone who is not like them.” Adora stared me dead in the eye, which made me realize even more how serious it was.
I looked back to the window, and saw the main one swoop down and come close to the car. I looked to Scotty, to see if he needed help. But as soon as I did, one of them came down on him, clutching him from the shoulders and pulling out of the car, tearing down the door in the process. The door skidded along the street scratching the road. I looked up and couldn’t believe what I saw; it was as if the five flying demons had turned into monsters of some sort. They’re bodies had turned a dark gray, and their eyes pitch black. Their nails had turned solid black and sharp as knives. They’re feet had somehow turned into those of some beast, with a back talon for holding its victims.
As it held Scotty up, it looked at me, with its shadowy eyes, and it grinned.
Scotty’s face told the whole story, he screamed in pain as the creature’s talons dug into his shoulders. Scotty screamed out in pain once more, shouting for help.
The last words he ever said.
In one quick but brutal move, the creature tore Scotty in two. The creature flew with both of Scotty’s pieces still in his grasp. The creature then flung one piece at a nearby building, and the other at the car. The creature gave a sort of war cry and smiled, exposing its rotting teeth. “RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE!” It hollered in a diabolic voice
The other beasts were still in hot pursuit of the car, flying after it. As one beast closed in, so did another. So basically, it was pretty hard to keep track of which one was more likely to do more damage. I couldn’t help but feel well helpless. I felt as if I should do something, but I didn’t know what. It was then that I saw what appeared to be a giant nail gun on the floor of the car. I picked it up and admired it, trying to figure out exactly how it worked.
But one of those things came and started to fly beside the car trying to get in through the door that Scotty had broken through before he died.
But even worse….
He was trying to get me.
He grabbed my leg, trying to drag me out, but I held on. “Let me go!” The beast looked at me with that dirty grin.
“Let go of me, or else…!”
“OR ELSE WHAT?” snapped the beast I stumbled back, a little perplexed. The beast gave one more pull, this time dragging my legs out. “Or else this!” I yelled. I pulled up the nail gun, and aimed it toward the beast. The beast looked shocked, and didn’t have time to move before I pulled the trigger. What came out of the nail gun was some form of a large wooden stake, which impaled the beast in the chest sending him crashing into the side of a building, turning into a cloud of smoke as we drove away.
I pulled myself back into the car, breathing heavily, and suddenly an arm wrapped around my neck. I jumped up, startle and turned to face Raelynn. “Calm down, I’m not going to hurt you.” Her voice seemed so calming. I breathed a sigh of relief and sat down as she held me gently.
“We almost there!” Darren shouted. We made a quick U-turn so that we could face the beasts. “What are you doing?” Shouted Adora. Darren looked to her and grinned. “Watch this.” He said cockily, he drove forward at full speed.
I then realized exactly what he was doing, and apparently, I figured it out before those flying things out there. One of them was hit by the car, sending it flying through the air Another slid off the hood of the car landing on the floor behind. The last one came down, and attached its talons to the hood of front of the car. It grinned evilly. Darren swerved the side, trying to shake it off. “It’s not going to let go.” Adora said. Adora looked at the beast and smirked. “But we can always do this the smart way.” Adora brought out her Desert Eagles and aimed that at the beast. “YOU’RE FOOLISH IF YOU THINK THAT’LL HARM ME!!!!!” bellowed the beast. Adora smirked even more. “Let’s see about that.” She fired the gun, sending the bullet breaking through the window and through its head.
The beast exploded into a gust of black smoke. I looked up to Raelynn, who looked at me and smiled. “Don’t worry, we’re here.” She said silently. I looked her in they eye, and smiled back. “Well, it’s about time.” I said, drifting to sleep in her arms.
