Marco walked over to the Ice Cream man who was delivering goodies of all sorts as usual, he was pretty good friends with the Ice Cream man, and sometimes got sweets for free. Marco walked over and said hi to his friend, “Hola Pancho!” Marco said walking up to the old Ice cream cart.
“Hola” said Pancho. “What brings you here my friend?” Marco looked puzzled. “What? I can’t come and say hi to my compadres anymore?” Pancho grinned and turned away opening a new box to get Ice Cream out of. He an ice cream sandwich to a little boy who was waiting next to Marco.
“I’m afraid I can’t give you some sweeties today.” Marco crossed his hands over his shoulders. “Porque? Why?”
Pancho stopped handing out Ice Cream and gave Marco a nervous look. “Ummm, I’ll tell you later. How’s that sound?” Marco looked at Pancho reassuringly. “It sounds good to me.” Pancho looked around and smiled at Marco. “Okay, Thanks for understanding man.”
With that Marco walked away.
Later That Day: Marco walked into a small Mexican restaurant, a little place called “La Casita”, Pancho’s favorite restaurant in all of Mexico. Marco sat at a small table in the corner and awaited his friend’s arrival. Now Pancho was older than Marco by a few years, Marco was 15 and Pancho was 17. Marco had practically known Pancho all his life; they shared many memories, and many struggles. Pancho had almost become an older brother to Marco.
Marco sat at the Mexican Restaurant in wait of his friend, until finally, he saw him enter. A smile grew across Marco’s face, and he stood to greet his friend, who finally came to the table.
“It’s about time Pancho, I thought I was going to be here forever!” Marco joked, and put on a more solemn expression. “So Pancho, what’s bothering you?”
Pancho stiffened up, looking around cautiously, before speaking. “If I tell you, do you promise to tell no one of this?” Marco leaned in closer, nodding, “Yes of course, what is it?” Pancho looked down and put rubbed the back of his head.
“My abuelita is dead.”
Marco’s jaw fell, as he looked at Pancho in disbelief. “What?!!” Pancho leaned in closer and said just a little louder, “My grandmother, she is dead, gone, no more. And the policia just says that it was an accident. But I’m the one who found her body.” Pancho paused and lowered his voice looking around. “I saw the claw marks.”
Marco looked at Pancho in dismay, “Claw marks? What do you mean? Like an animal?” Marco tilted his head, confused. “Not like any animal I’ve ever seen…” Pancho began to shiver and he took a deep breath. “That is why I’m going to go to her little cabin this weekend, to check it out.” Marco folded his arms. “Alone?”
Pancho rubbed his head again, this time looking at Marco in disbelief, “I cannot allow you to come with me my friend. It’s too dangerous!” Pancho looked Marco right in the eye. “You don’t understand Marco, You are like a brother to me, and I would die if anything bad ever happened to you.” Marco hung his head down, a little disappointed.
Pancho reached over and touched his shoulder, “But I’m not going to be alone, so don’t worry buddy. Me and 3 of my other friends will be coming.”
Marco lifted his head, with a look of desperation on his face. “But Pancho, I can help, really I can.” Pancho raised his eyebrow and looked at Marco, quietly, thinking. Marco kept looking at Pancho, eager to help his friend in his time of need
Pancho then opened his mouth, “Okay fine, but promise me you won’t go running off. My grandmother lived in deep in the heart of that forest, and getting lost could almost surely mean that there will be trouble.”
Marco lifted his head, a smile spreading over his face. “Yes, Pancho of course! Consider me your shadow!” Pancho smiled and lifted his glass. “Okay, this weekend then.” Marco raised his glass as well, okay, this weekend.
That Weekend: Pancho’s old brown car pulled into his grandmother’s drive in, and all five people got out. Pancho walked up to his grandmother’s door, and put in they key, pushing the door open.
Pancho went in and threw the sleeping bags on the couch, going over to the fridge and putting in the tacos, securely wrapped in tin foil. “Make yourselves at home, but don’t get to comfy.” Pancho looked across the living room, to his grandmother’s room, which stood out against the rest of the grey dull house.
The door was decorated with red roses bordering the trims. It was a bright pink color, and had a sombrero pinned right in the center of it. In big Red letters, it read “El Revolucion!!!” in that unmistakable handwriting of Pancho’s grandmother… that is, his late grandmother.
Pancho walked over to the window and looked outside at the vast forest that overwhelmed the land.
“We will go at midnight,” proclaimed Pancho.
Later that Night: The group walked out into the forest, with flashlights in hand. Pancho signaled to the others for them to get in a circle. “Okay, here’s how it’s gonna work. We’re all going to spread out, okay? Everyone one except Marco.” Marco picked stiffened up and stared at Pancho through clenched teeth. “What do you mean Pancho? I want to go to! I’m old enough and I can take care of myself!” Pancho looked at Marco, and thought about what he said. “Okay, fine. But you have to stay with Juan.” Pancho focused his attention to Juan, who nodded his head in understanding. “Do you understand Marco?” Marco looked at Juan, and then to Pancho. Hanging his head down Marco replied, “Okay fine.” Pancho looked at Marco and smiled, “Okay, good” The group then departed into the thick green forest.
The night was pitch, and Marco could barely see Juan walking ahead of him. “Do you have another flashlight?” Juan stopped and looked back at Marco. “I’m afraid not, this is the only one I have.” Marco looked around before answering. “Okay, well let’s keep moving then.”
CRRRUUUUUNNNCCCHHH.
Something was following them.
“What on earth is that?” Juan shone his flashlight around looking for the source of the noise. Marco turned around just as fast, with Juan standing behind him still flashing the light. “I don’t see anything.” Marco said. “Maybe it was nothing.” Juan scanned the trees with the flashlight back and fourth slowly. “I think you’re right Marco, let’s go.” Juan and Marco turned in unison and began to walk, but out of the corner of Marco’s eye…
“Look!” Juan turned swiftly and shone his light.
“Oh my god.” Juan’s jaw dropped.
Standing floating behind some trees not far from where they were standing was a pair of bloodshot red eyes, which seemed to glow in the dark. “What is that?” Marco said nervously pointing a finger. Juan opened his mouth to speak, “I think that it is a---“ Suddenly the creature zoomed to the left, and out of sight. Marco looked around, cautiously. “Where the hell did it go?”
AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The creature had ran around, and came up behind Juan, pouncing on his back. “Juan! No! Pancho screamed, watching the creature pin Juan to the ground.
The creature was a brownish color and had no fur, just bare skin. Its ribs were exposed and it had spikes running from the top of its head down its spine. Its eyes were big and red, almost like an alien’s. It was really skinny and had long sharp nails with grime growing underneath. It opened its mouth to howl, and Marco could see all its sharp fangs, covered with dry blood. Its tongue curled on the bottom of its mouth, and it let out a sharp beastlike cry.
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRKKKKKKKKKK.
Marco stood frozen, the fallen flashlight shining on the beast.
“Run…” Juan said from under the beast. “Run Marco! Run!” Marco bent down quickly and retrieved the flashlight, running through the dark forest.
