Blane Chapter 7: Friends
|
During the summer, Blane had tried out for the football team and made it, but much of the team didn’t feel too comfortable with a homosexual in the locker room with them. The coach couldn’t make Blane quit, but Blane still considered much of the existing football team as his friends and he didn’t want them so uncomfortable that they couldn’t win games. So, he quit the team on his own account.
Dale, however, gave him shit for this. He reminded Blane that he had told him never to apologize for himself, and that quitting the football team was Blane’s way of apologizing to the team for inconveniencing them by coming out. Dale was always like a storm when he thought that someone was doing something wrong, but Blane stood behind his decision. The rest of the summer, Blane and Dale had to themselves. They went to the beach, to water parks, and did lots other fun things that they could do without a lot of ridicule from others about their relationship.
One thing that they were both dreading, was going to back to school. They weren’t looking forward to seeing everyone again, and having to explain the junior prom.
One hot summer day, they were at Dale’s house, cuddling on the couch, discussing friends, and the subject of Mike Brody came up
“So, you already know my friends, but I don’t even know any of yours.” said Dale
“All of my friends abandoned me.” said Blane
“Well, all of your football and baseball friends, but you’re not that shallow. You’ve got have other friends than them.” said Dale
“Well, my best friend in the whole world, besides you, is Mike Brody.” said Blane
“I like the besides me part, but I don’t know any Mike Brody.” said Dale
“Oh, you wouldn’t, he doesn’t go to our school.” said Blane
“Than how are you best friends?” asked Dale
“Well, we’ve been friends since we were like ten, but after junior high, his family moved to a different part of town, and we ended up going to different high schools.” said Blane
“Wow, that’s so cool that you guys could stay good friends even after something like that.” said Dale
“You know what, come to think of it; he had said a while back that he wanted to meet you. I said that I would set it up, but I guess that I forgot.” said Blane
“Oh, so you’ve talked to him about me, but I didn’t even know that he existed.” said Dale
“It was the night that I came out. When I heard that my dad wanted to ship me away, I snuck out of the house. It was late, so I didn’t want to call you, but Mike is a partier. I knew that he would be out and about still. I called him, and I met with him at a coffee house. I told him I was gay.” said Blane
“How did he react?” asked Dale
“He said he knew.” said Blane
“He knew?” asked Dale
“He said that he could tell that I wasn’t at all interested in Madison, and that I never really seemed interested in any girl. So, he put his conclusions together and figured out that I was gay.” said Blane
“And he was okay with it?” asked Dale
“Yeah, he was cool with it. He said that I had been a really good friend to him, and that he wanted to return the favor and abandoning me for something that I couldn’t change wouldn’t be holding up to that.” said Blane
“Wow, I can see why you two are best friends.” said Dale
“I should call him up. We could all go out to get some pizza or something.” said Blane
“I would love that.” said Dale
So, Blane called Mike up.
“Hey Mike.” said Blane
“Hey, Blane; I was beginning to think that you forgot about me.” said Mike
“Sorry but I kinda did.” said Blane
“That’s okay, you’ve got your new boyfriend and everything, I should be the last thing on your mind.” said Mike
“No you shouldn’t, you’ve been my best friend for years, anyway. Do you remember when you said that you wanted to meet my boyfriend, Dale?” asked Blane
“Yeah” said Mike
“Well, I was wondering if you wanted to grab some pizza with us this Friday night?” asked Blane
“Yeah, sure I would love that!” said Mike
“Okay cool. How about six o’ clock at Tony’s Pizzeria?” asked Blane
“Cool, the pizza there is so good.” said Mike
“Yeah, that’s why I picked it.” said Blane
“Okay, so see you Friday night at six.” said Mike
“See you then.” said Blane before he hung up the phone.
“What did he say?” asked Dale
“He seemed really excited.” said Blane
“He did?” asked Dale
“Yeah, almost weirdly excited.” said Blane
“How could he not be excited? He’s seeing you. Seeing you always excites me.” said Dale
“Aw” said Blane as planted his lips on Dales
