Chapter 7

Reality

Luke sat up in his bed, sweating more than he ever had in his life. It was dark and the wind outside was moving fast. It was just a dream. For a second he was relieved, but then all he could do was lie back down in the fetal position and cry as if he actually lost Ken. He couldn’t imagine losing the best thing that has ever happened to him.

He didn’t want anything to happen to Ken, but he knew that the prom was important to him, so he didn’t want to change his mind about going to the prom after all. So the next morning, which was Saturday, an exact week before the prom, he wanted to talk to Lisa about his dream.

“Hey Luke, what’s wrong? Is everything okay with Ken?” asked Lisa as they were eating breakfast at the table.

“No, nothing like that, we’re doing fine. But what I’m all twisted up about does have something to do with him.” answered Luke

“It’s just you and me here, talk to me.” said Lisa

“I had a really disturbing nightmare last night. I dreamt that Ken and I went to the prom, and at the end he was being based by a group of guys from another school.”

“Oh, my gosh, you must have been so scared when you woke up” said Lisa

“That’s not all. Lisa, he died. He died in my arms.”

“Oh no, I’m so sorry honey. Don’t pay any attention to this; you just have the worst on your mind is all. You’ve got to forget this dream and just be happy that you’re with him.”

“Maybe you’re right. I was just a dream, nothing like that would ever happen it can’t happen, I love him to much.’

“Stop talking, here comes Casey and Amanda.”

“Why, did you not tell them?” asked Luke

“How could I tell them? It’s not my place to tell them something like that.” answered Lisa

Luke wasn’t necessarily angry with Lisa, just maybe confused on why se didn’t tell them. Now he had to come out all over again. But why did they think that he was gone all of that time? Did she tell them that he was just on a trip or something?

He knew that he had to tell them, but he wasn’t sure that now was the absolute best time. He knew that before the prom, Casey was going to leave to go hang out with his friends, so he wouldn’t see him and Ken be together, so he knew that he would be able to hold off telling Casey that he was gay, at least until after the prom. As for Amanda; she was going to be at a sleep over, so that was taken of. He was definitely going to wait until after the prom to tell them.

So the next week went by faster than Luke had wanted it o go. It was Friday and the prom was tomorrow. Ken was so exited about it; Luke didn’t want to burst his excitement by telling him about the dream, so he just kept it to himself. And even though he really was scared about going to the prom, he didn’t want to show it, because, once again, he knew that it was really important to Ken to go with him. To go with Luke, the love of his life, as Ken put it.

Luke loved Ken, but he wasn’t sure if Ken was the love of his life yet. They had only just met. They didn’t really even take the time to get to know each other before they started to go out. That was actually the only thing that he never agreed with Ken with. Of course he never told Ken this. Ken was a really sensitive person, for a jock. Luke knew that if he told Ken that he wasn’t sure that they were the loves of each other’s lives, then Ken would doubt their relationship.

The next night, Luke was getting ready in his room. He went down stairs, and Ken and his mother were already there. Luke went to stand next to Ken. When Jenny saw the two of them together, she began to cry. Luke began to notice that this was beginning to look a lot like his dream.

Jenny was taking tons of pictures of them together. The door bell rang, it was Brian and Katie. Jenny wanted to take pictures of all four of them, but by then, Ken was completely annoyed by her photography. So, he didn’t let her. By the time that they were on their way to the hotel in which the prom was being held at, Luke was noticing more and more similarities between his dream and reality. On the limo ride there, he stayed quiet while the others, including Ken, celebrated being on their way to prom.

After a few minutes, Ken noticed that Luke was almost alarmingly quiet. He calmed down and sat next to Luke and put his arm around him.

“What’s going on? Aren’t you happy about going to prom? Are you having second thoughts?” asked Ken

“No, I just have a lot on my mind is all.” answered Luke

“Do you wanna talk about it?” asked Ken

“No, it’s okay. Go ahead go have some more fun with Brian and Katie. I’ll feel better once we get to the hotel.” said Luke

“What if I want to stay here and hold you?” asked Ken

“Well how could I object to that?” exclaimed Luke as he kissed Ken

So as Brian and Katie celebrated on one side of the limo, Ken and Luke stayed in each others arms on the other side. The arrived at the hotel about two hours after the prom was set to begin. No one wants to be the first there, so they planned to get there pretty late. They got there and Luke noticed that now Ken seemed to be reluctant on going in.

Luke looked over to where Ken was, and saw he was gone; he panicked. He began to look around frantically. He saw Ken sitting on a bench just outside of the hotel entrance. As he walked towards Ken, another couple cut off his path trying to get into the hotel. He went over and sat next to Ken.

“What’s wrong?” asked Luke

“I don’t know. I guess I’ve just been so excited about this night, that I never thought about what could happen to us. What if some homophobe from one of the other schools decides he doesn’t wanna be around a couple of fags, and beats us up or something?”

“You can’t think like that. You’ve just got to go in there, and be yourself, and fuck those other guys.”

“I know, but…”

“But nothing. How about this? How about we go inside and we don’t leave each other’s sides for the whole night.”

“I don’t have a problem with that. Seeing you all night will just make this night even better than it already will be.”

They each locked hands, took deep breathes and walked inside together. They went through the whole routine of arriving at the prom. The photographs, the hellos of everyone in the room, they went through all of it. After everything, they had found Brian and Katie. They were saving a table for the four of them, but they didn’t sit down before getting some food.

Every time that Luke would notice that the prom was beginning to be more and more like his dream, for a second he would be frightened, but then he would brush it off like it was nothing. Ken wanted to dance so they got up and danced and danced and danced all night. Luke was never happier to be with Ken than in those moments of dancing.

Before they knew it, the last song of the night was up. It was always the only slow song of the night. Luke pulled Ken closer and held him as tight as he could. At that moment, he was then sure that Ken really was the one he wanted to love for the rest of his life. Then the song was over and everyone on the dance floor made their way to their tables to relax before they had to leave.

Ken needed to go to the bathroom before they left, so he told Luke where he would be going. Of course when Luke realized that that was exactly what happened in his dream, he did everything he could to stop Ken from going alone, but in the end, he knew that it was silly to think that he could accompany Ken to the bathroom.

So, Luke waited at the table with Brian and Katie. He waited, impatiently none the less. He literally counted ever second that Ken was gone. He was taking a while, so he decided to run into the bathroom to check and see if everything was ok. He ran into the bathroom to find Ken washing his hands at the sink. He ran to Ken and embraced him as tightly as he could

“Hey, I can’t breathe” said Ken in a squished voice

“I’m so glad you’re here. I love you so much. Promise me you’ll never leave me.” said Luke

“If I promise, will you loosen your grip?” said Ken

“Oh sorry” said Luke as he loosened his grip but didn’t let go.

“Can I dry my hands now?” asked Ken

“Sure, I’ll be outside” said Luke.

Ken met Luke outside of the bathroom when he was done drying his hands. They locked hands, and then headed towards Brian and Katie. They were all ready to leave so they headed out. The first person that the limo dropped off was Ken. Luke got off with him.

“I had the most wonderful time tonight.” said Luke

“Me too; I’ll see you tomorrow?” asked Ken

“Definitely.” said Luke right before he kissed Ken goodnight on the lips.

Luke left Ken’s doorstep, and got back into the limo which took him to his house. Everyone was asleep in his house. He was surprised that Lisa was asleep. She told him that she was going to wait up for him. She probably just got too sleepy. So he went upstairs and plopped him self on the bed with his tux still on and his bow tie untied.

He lay on his bed, thinking that he had the best time ever in his life. He had no doubt that that was because of Ken. Yeah, he spent half he time worrying that something bad was going to happen to Ken, but it didn’t, and he still had a great time. He fell asleep in his tux that night. The next morning, he showered and got dressed. He went downstairs to find Ken talking with Lisa.

“Hey Hun, what’s up?” asked Luke at the bottom of the stairs.

“Can we talk?” asked Ken

“Yeah, we can go into the backyard.” said Luke as they headed for the backyard

“We did you need to talk to me about?” asked Luke as they sat on a bench in the backyard.

“It’s nothing big. I just was wondering why you were so glad to see e last night at the prom. It was just kind of weird is all.” said Ken

“Well, about a week before the prom, I started having these recurring nightmares.”

“About what?” asked Ken

“They were about us going to the prom. Our actual prom day was actually disturbingly similar to them.”

“Well, that doesn’t sound so bad, dreams of our prom.” said Ken

“Well, at the end, when you went to the bathroom. I went in there to check on you, and you had been beaten to death by the guys from the other schools. There was blood everywhere. I yelled for help, and that’s usually when I woke up all sweaty with tears running down my face. I was just so happy that the end of my dream didn’t come true like the rest of it did.”

“Why didn’t you say anything to me? I wouldn’t have even gone to the prom if you had told me this. It was probably torture for you.” said Ken

“No Ken, it really wasn’t. I had a wonderful time being with you and dancing with you. I couldn’t imagine spending that night doing anything else.”

“Are you sure?” asked Ken, who was very worried.

“Yes, I’m sure. Want to go back inside?” asked Luke

“Yeah”

So they went back inside. Ken was about to leave when Lisa asked him to stay for breakfast. Ken first respectfully declined the inclined the invitation, then thought about how good Lisa’s cooking was and changed his mind. So, Luke and Ken sat patiently at the table while Lisa prepared breakfast for them and the rest of the family. She had just started to serve the plates, when Casey and Amanda came downstairs.

Luke completely forgot that he still hadn’t told them that he was gay. He figured that with Ken here was the perfect time to do it, but he had figured he would do it after breakfast. Little did he know, other things would force him to come out to them a lot sooner.

“Hey Ken, no offense or anything, but why are you always here. I know you and Luke are like best friends and all, but my best friend doesn’t come over every day.” asked Casey

“Um…” Ken didn’t know how to answer.

“Casey, you are not allowed to talk to guests that way.” scolded Lisa

“I was just wondering.” said Casey

Ken looked towards Luke, confused as to what t say

“Um, there’s something I need to tell you guys. I guess this is as good a time as any.”

“What” asked Amanda

“Ken and I aren’t just friends; we’re boyfriends” said Luke as he put his hand over Ken’s

“What?” asked Casey

“I’m gay”

“You’re gay” said Casey

“Yeah, is there a problem?” asked Luke

“Yeah there’s a problem, my brothers a faggot.” said Casey boldly

“Casey Timothy Wallace, you are not allowed to talk to your brother like that. That is disrespectful.” said

“No faggot is ever going to get respect from me.”

“Casey!” yelled Lisa as Casey ran off to his room

“No, it’s okay Lisa. It’s understandable, he just needs some time.”

“He can’t talk to you like that, are you okay?” asked Lisa

“I’m okay Lisa, it’s nothing Ken and I haven’t heard before at school or in public.” said Luke.

“I’m so sorry Luke. I know how close you are to your brother. If I wasn’t here all the time, none of this would have happened.” said Ken

“No, this is not your fault. I would have had to tell him sooner or later.” replied Luke

“What’s a faggot?” asked Amanda

“It’s a very bad word, Amanda.” said Luke

“Then why was Casey calling you that?” asked Amanda

“He’s just really mad Amanda.” said Ken

“I still love you Luke. I’m not mad at you.” said Amanda

“Oh, I know that Amanda.” he said as he gave her a hug.

“Maybe I should go, this is a family thing. I don’t want to intrude.” said Ken

“You’re family to me.” said Luke stopping him as he was heading for the door

“Besides, you haven’t even touched your breakfast.” said Luke

“I don’t know it’s just kind of awkward right now. I’ll just eat breakfast at home.” said Ken

“Okay, are you sure?” asked Luke

“Yeah, you need to be with your family right now.”

“Okay, if you’re sure.” he said right before giving him a peck on the lips.

Luke went up to his room, and Ken went back to his home. Ken was really bothered by what had gone on at Luke’s house. Not because of all the things that Casey said, but because he knew that Luke was very close to his brother Casey and would be torn up by all of this. Ken’s mother saw the sad look on his face and asked what was wrong. He explained about everything that had happened at the Wallace house. She was very sad for Luke too. She told Ken that he should go talk to Casey, and maybe he can make Casey see that Luke is still the brother he had always had.

Ken thought that that might be a good idea. But he wanted to give Casey some time to cool off from the hock first. After a few hours, he decided to finally go over and see if he could talk some sense into Casey. So he walked over to the Wallace’s house and rang the bell, Lisa answered.

“Oh Ken, let me get Luke. He’s upstairs.” said Ken

“No, I’m here to talk to Casey. I know where his room is, can I go up?” asked Ken

“Sure, go ahead.” said Lisa

“Don’t tell Luke that I’m here. I’m just going to talk to Casey and then leave.” said Ken

“Okay” replied Lisa

Ken made his way to Casey’s room, knocked and then walked in without waiting for his answer.

“What are you doing here? You turned my brother into a faggot, and now you’re gonna turn me into one. Well it’s not going to happen. Get out of my room.”

“I’m not here to do anything except for talk to you.” said Ken

“Oh yeah, about what?” asked Casey

“About your brother.” said Ken

“Oh that faggot.” said Casey

“Hey now, I know that you’re mad at him for not telling you about being gay, but that word, you just don’t know how hurtful it is do you?” exclaimed Ken

“Oh, I forgot you’re one to.” said Casey

“No, I’m not a faggot. I’m a homosexual, and so is your brother. Even if you don’t like it, you should at least try. He’s still the person you’ve always known and had a good relationship with you.”

“No he isn’t. I thought I knew who he was, but he was lying to me.”

“He didn’t lie to you, he just didn’t tell you something. You don’t understand how hard it is to tell someone that you love that you’re something that they might hate.”

That’s what he went through. I have hard time believing that. I’m just mad because we were so close. I thought we could tell each other anything. At least that’s what he always told me.”

“You don’t get it. Being gay is something that a lot of people are ashamed of being and a lot of other people believe is something to be ashamed of. Now you’re brother isn’t one to be ashamed of himself, but he thought that if he told you, that you would be ashamed of him. He didn’t want to ruin the relationship you had. He’s always been gay, since the moment that he was born, and it’s the same with me. He’s the person that you’ve always known your whole, he just didn’t tell you one detail of his life so you wouldn’t be ashamed to be around him or hang out with him.”

“I don’t, I guess you’re right. I feel bad now, for the things that I said to him.” said Casey

“Yeah, you said some pretty horrible things that didn’t only offend him, they offended me, and not because I’m gay too, but because I love your brother, and I could see the hurt in his eyes when you said those things. He tried to play it off t your sister that he was okay, but I could see that he was hurt. It was so painful for me to see him hurt, I couldn’t even stay to finish eating breakfast with him, I had to leave.” said Ken

“Oh my God, I’m such a jackass!” said Casey

“Pretty much.” said Ken

“Thanks so much Ken. I’m going to go apologize to Luke right now, come on” said Casey

“You know what I think that it’s better that I just leave.” said Ken

“Okay” said Casey as Ken was just about out the door

“Oh, and don’t tell Luke that I was the one behind your big epiphany.” said Ken

“What?” asked Casey

“Don’t tell Luke tat I was the one to change your mind or that I was even here.” said Ken

“Okay”

Casey apologized to Luke, and Luke happily accepted, although he didn’t know what had changed his mind. The next day at school, Luke was happy to tell Ken the good news. Ken didn’t really like to keep things from Luke, so he decided to tell him that he persuaded Casey to apologize to him. Besides, who better to Luke than him?

“Listen Luke, yesterday, after I left, I came back a few hours later to talk to Casey. I was the one who changed Casey’s mind about you.” said Ken

“What?”

“I just couldn’t see you unhappy like that.”

“You didn’t have to do that.” said Luke

“Yeah I did. Like I said, I just couldn’t live with seeing the pain in your eyes. I had to do something.” said Ken

“Well, you could have just told me, you didn’t have to keep it from me.”

“I didn’t know if you were going to like the idea of me interfering.” said Ken

“Are you kidding me? Of course I wouldn’t mind. I would love for you to spend more time with my brother and sister, just like I wouldn’t mind to spend more time with yours.” said Luke.

“I would definitely love that. Just like I love you.” said Ken

“I love you too.” said Luke
