Daily Lane Ch.6: Prom
|
Luke and Ken got through the school year. Ken played football as he always did, and none of the other players on the team seemed to have a problem with his homosexuality. Luke didn’t really feel like he should join any sports, he had played football at his old high school, but he didn’t want the team to have to deal with two homosexuals, who were also going out.
So Luke decided to form a gay straight alliance at Gary High School. At first it wasn’t very popular with only a few members, but as the year went on, the number of members grew. It grew almost to the point to where they couldn’t let everyone who wanted to join in, as there was a limit to how many members that each club or committee affiliated with the school could have.
The next thing that Luke and Ken had to tackle was prom. They were puzzled on whether or not to go together, or go with separate dates and meet up there. Of course they didn’t have any problems with going with each other; the question was whether or not the rest of the school would.
They looked for advice from everyone that they knew. They asked Mrs. Perch, Lisa, Jenny and Ray, and even Brian for advice, and they all told them the same thing. They told them that they should do whatever they felt was the right thing to do, and whatever was in their hearts. They still could really decide on what to do.
What they wanted to do was go together, but they didn’t want to end up having to leave because of ignorant people. They contemplated for days and days, it wasn’t something that was easy for them, they were never a couple that hid their love from the world, but this time could be the exception.
“So, have you guys decided on what you’re going to do for Prom? Are you guys going to go together, or try to make it seem like you’re going stag?” asked Brian
“No, we haven’t really come to a decision yet. But we’ve been leaning towards going it stag.” said Ken
“I don’t get it, what so hard about making a decision? You guys care for each other right? So why don’t you just go together, I mean it’s one of the most important part of someone’s life. It’s prom for Christ’s sake, you guys should be going together.” said Brian
“Unfortunately, not everybody shares your views on the subject.” said Luke
“Well forget them. Who cares what they think?” asked Brian
“We don’t care about what they think. We care about what they’ll do if they feel that we’ve gone too far at prom.” said Luke.
“I guess you have a point, but what if you’re not giving everybody enough credit?” asked Brian
“Maybe, we’ll keep thinking about it though” said Ken.
Luke agreed that they should walk into this situation lightly. They should think about it as carefully as possible and try to make the decision as close to prom as possible so that way they’re absolutely sure that they’re making the right decision. Luke didn’t really even know why they were making such a big deal out of it. He was never really the type to hide his sexuality, except for Lisa, everyone back at home knew that he was gay.
Ken wasn’t that way either, so in the end they decided to go together and forget about everyone else. So the day after they had decided this, which was Saturday, they went to go shopping for their tuxes. They laughed about maybe getting matching tuxes at first, but they decided that that might be a good idea.
They were contemplating on whether or not to do the black and white thing or do put some color into it. The sales person at the store told them that he liked the color.
But they ended up just getting a classic tux for each of them, with coat tails and everything. They looked very handsome, Ken even saw one of the guys that worked there cruising Luke, and so did Luke.
“I guess we look pretty good. Did you see that guy checking us out?” asked Luke
“Yeah and he can’t have you ‘cause you’re all mine.” said Ken as he pulled Luke towards him by his jacket collar to give him a kiss.
“Of course I am, no one is gonna take me away from you.” said Luke after their kiss.
So it was established that the couple looked exceptionally handsome in their new tuxes. They were really excited for prom, and you could probably say that Jenny and Lisa were even more excited than them. Jenny even rented a professional camera for the few minutes that were available for pictures before they left for the prom.
“So did you guys decide on what you’re going to do for prom?” asked Brian that next Monday at school.
“Yeah, we decided to go together and just forget about everyone else and focus on how much we love each other.” said Luke
“Well that’s great; we can go all four of us with my date. My dad rented a limo.” said Brian
“That sounds good, definitely. What you think Hun?” asked Ken.
“Yeah, that sounds like it’ll be fun.” said Luke
“Okay then, off to the prom together in a limo!” said Brian
They each counted the days until prom. They couldn’t wait to everyone’s faces when they showed up there. They waited and they waited, and then the day finally arrived; May thirteenth. They each got ready, and Ken and Jenny were supposed to go over to Luke’s house when Ken was ready. When Jenny saw the two together in their tuxes for the first time, she began to weep in happiness.
She took like twenty pictures of just them in the Wallace’s living room. The next thing that they knew, Brian and his date, Katie, showed up at the door with their limo in the front of the house. Then Jenny wanted to take pictures of all four of them, but by then, Ken was irritated with all of his mom’s picture taking so he didn’t let her.
On the way to the hotel that the prom was being held at, the other three kids were having fun on their first ride in a limo, but not Luke. He had a bad feeling go into this prom. He sat quiet and to himself, while the other three were practically laughing and yelling at the top of their lungs.
A few minutes into their wild antics, Ken noticed that Luke didn’t seem as enthusiastic about their soon to be prom adventures.
“What’s wrong Luke? Why do you look so depressed?” asked Ken
“I just have a really big feeling that something bad is going to happen.” answered Luke
“I think you’re thinking about everything way too much. But you what I think?” asked Ken
“What?” asked Luke
“I think you just need to focus on us and this being the best day in our lives so far, and just have some fun. You’re seventeen, you’re out with your boyfriend, just loosen up.” said Ken.
“Maybe you’re right. I just have had a lot of bad experience at my old school with the gay thing. Maybe I’m just channeling all those bad feelings to now. You’re right, I all need to remember is that I’m here with you and that I love you.” said Luke right before giving Ken a peck on the cheek.
When they got there, then suddenly Ken got his nerves all bunched up. Brian and Katie went ahead without them. Ken wondered away from Luke and sat on a bench just outside the door of the hotel. Luke saw that Ken looked alarmingly nervous and almost looked sick. So he walked over cautiously and sat next to him. Other than the occasional couple walking into the hotel, they were completely alone.
“What’s wrong?” asked Luke
“I know I told you not to think so much about everyone else and concentrate on us, but not that we’re here, it feels totally different.” answered Ken
“Well, if you think about it, most of these kids have seen us together already at school.” said Luke
“Yeah, but there are also going to be students from other schools. What about them? What if they do something?” asked Ken
“I’m there for you, if you want, we can go everywhere together. Neither of us will go anywhere alone.” suggested Luke
“That’s sounds like a good idea.” said Ken
“Now, are you ready to go inside and groove?” asked Luke
“Ha, ha; did you just say groove?”
“Yeah, so are ya?” asked Luke
“Yeah let’s go groove.” said Ken
So, they got up simultaneously got up, locked their hands together, took deep breaths and walked inside. As they walked in, people stared. The crowd parted as if it were the Red Sea parted by Moses. They walked into the photo booth, and got a look from the photographer, but finally got their pictures together.
When they got out of the photo booth, they both realized that they both hadn’t eaten for quite some time, so they both decided to hit the buffet for some food. They found the table that Brian and Katie were saving for the four of them and went to sit down with their food.
They both looked around at the happy couples dancing on the dance floor, and they both felt the sudden urge to dance. So they both finished their food, and then made their way to the dance floor. The others stayed clear of them as if they were going to catch the new bug that’s going around called gay, but the happy couple didn’t care. Nothing could drown their happiness now that they were finally there.
They danced and danced, for probably twenty songs. Then they went to sit back down, along with Brian and Katie, who joined them dancing about two songs after them.
“I’m parched, I’m going to get some punch.” said Luke
“Wait” said Ken
“Don’t worry, Brian’s going to come with me to get some for him and Katie, aren’t you Brian?” said Luke
“Yeah, sure” said Brian
So Brian and Luke went to go get punch for everybody. While they were at the punch table Brian asked Luke why Ken was so skittish. Luke told Brian that Ken was worried about what the kids from the other schools might do. Brian replied by agreeing that they couldn’t be too precautious, because there really was no telling how they would react to a gay couple at prom.
As the night went on, Ken got more and more comfortable around everyone when he noticed that nothing was really happening. So they got up to dance some more. They danced and danced all night long. Until, finally, the last song came; which was always the only slow song of the night. They danced so close, and so tight that each of them could hardly breathe. They didn’t want to let go. They didn’t want that moment to be over.
After the song, everyone just kind of hung around and sat at their tables. While they were all doing this, Ken decided to go to the bathroom before they had to go. Luke offered to go with him, but he felt comfortable to go alone. So Ken did his business, and then went to wash his hands. When he looked up, he saw four guys from the other school standing right behind him. He nearly swallowed his tongue, he was so petrified.
“Hey guys, did you have a fun time at our prom?” asked Ken as he turned around
“Not with you faggots around us” said one of the guys
Then the guy that was right in front of him punch him so hard in the face that he fell back and hit his head on the edge of the sink, knocking him unconscious. As he hit the floor the proceeded to pick him up. When they had him up, they threw him up against the wall, he hit the floor again. Then they each took shots at kicking him as hard as they could in the ribs.
The ringleader then bent down towards him, and then began to punch him, alternating sides of his face. The blood was going everywhere. They picked him up again and tried to throw him once again, but they undershot how far the wall was next to the sinks. When Ken’s body fell it turned and fell face first into the sink. He started to bleed uncontrollably.
When the bashers saw all of the blood, they panicked and left the bathroom looking as unsuspicious as they could. But they weren’t unseen by everyone. As they were leaving, Luke spotted them, and decided that Ken was taking a little bit too long in the bathroom. So he went to go check on him.
He walked into the bathroom and saw all of the blood everywhere, and then saw Ken. He was just lying there in a pool of his own blood. He ran towards him and slid to the floor. He picked up his head and held him in his arms
“Ken! No, no, no, no, no, you can’t, you can’t; stay with me Ken.” screamed Luke as he began to cry “HELP!!!!”
He rocked back and forth, on his knees, with Ken in his arms. When he screamed everybody came rushing in, but the first one in the bathroom was Brian, who ended up right beside Luke, crying just as much as he was. The paramedics were called, but it was too late. Ken Derek Johnston died Luke’s arms that night of May thirteenth.
