Daily Lane Ch.3: Pain After Tragedy pt.2

Drama Created on 3-27-08 Views(41) Story Rating G

So without calling, they showed up at the Thomas’ house without calling first, which was probably their first mistake. The first thing that Judy did when she opened the door was look around at the street behind the couple.

“What are you two doing here?” asked Judy

“We just needed to talk to you for a second Judy” said Ken.

“Did you see anybody maybe watching you or following you while you were coming here?” asked Judy in a very paranoid tone of voice.

“No”

She quickly pulled them inside, as if she was scared. Luke and Ken were extremely puzzled. It was as if she was scared to be seen or terrified to even be in her own house. Something was wrong and the two of them could smell it in her demeanor.

“Now what did you guys come here to talk about? And make it fast, I don’t have much time talk.” said a jittery Mrs. Thomas.

“Don’t worry we won’t take up much of our time.” said Ken.

They sat down on the couch while Judy pulled out a chair for herself to sit on.

“It’s about your daughter, Rachel.”

“Why are you asking about my daughter?” asked Judy

“Have the police told you anything about the possibility of a serial killer being involved in Rachel’s murder?” asked Luke

“What”

“I’m sorry to burden you with this information, but I was watching the NEWS about two days after her death, and the reporter had mentioned that there maybe a link between the serial murders of girls Rachel’s age, and Rachel murder. And if this true, than what if whoever Rachel saw, seen that she saw them and went to make sure that she didn’t tell anyone what she saw. What if what she saw was the serial murderer in action? What of there’s a serial killer living on Daily Lane?” said Luke

“I don’t have time for this right now. Frank is going to be home any minute now, if I don’t have his dinner ready, he’ll be really angry.”

“Well, we don’t want to put you on bad terms with your husband, so we’ll just go.” said Ken.

“No, I’m not finished.” said Luke.

“Yes you are Luke” said Ken.

Luke didn’t want to cause any trouble, so he listened to Ken even though he wanted to finish was he was doing. But he didn’t know why Ken wanted to leave so fast. It was as if Ken knew something that he didn’t. So after they got back to Luke’s house, Luke decided to confront him about it.

“Why did you want to leave so fast from the Thomas’?” asked Luke

“I didn’t want her to be on bad terms with her husband. She seemed to be scared of him.” said Ken.

“Yeah what was up with that?” asked Luke

“Don’t quote me on this, but I think that Frank is hitting Judy.” said Ken

“You’re crazy, why would you think that?” asked Luke

“Because she had a bruise on her forearm.” said Ken.

“Wow, you’re really observant. I can’t believe this. We have to go to the police.” said Luke.

“We can’t go to the police until we know for sure that that’s what’s happening. What if she got that bruise by hitting her arm on a corner or something, it’s not our business. If we see more signs of abuse, we confront her. If she doesn’t admit it, then we go about our business.”

“But what if she’s getting hurt really bad?” asked Luke

“But it’s none of our business if she won’t admit it. Unless we’ve witnessed someone hit her, we can’t do anything.” said Ken.

“I guess you have point there. I’m sorry, I always jump to conclusions.” said Luke

“You don’t have to apologize for wanting to help someone whom you think is in danger.”

“Thanks so much.” said Luke

“Well, I have to get hoe. Are you going to be okay by yourself?” asked Ken

“I’ll be okay; I’m not some crazy person that’s ready to break at any second. Go home, be with your family.” said Luke as he gave him a peck on the cheek.

“Just call me if you need anything or if you just want to talk” said Ken who was extremely nervous that Luke was going to do something rash.

“I’ll be fine, go home. Tell your mom and dad that I said hello.” said Luke

“Okay” Ken said as he left Luke’s room. As he went downstairs he noticed that Lisa was in the kitchen and he went to go talk to her.

“Hey Ken; how was your date with Luke?” asked Lisa

“It was okay.” said Ken

“Did you get through to him?” asked Lisa

“Yeah I did, but I’m really not willing to break his confidence right now to tell you what’s been going on with him. All I can say is that’s he’s fine and I’m going to help him through it.”

“Well I certainly don’t want you to break his confidence, but is this something that he going to need professional help for?” asked Lisa

“No, he’s just had a lot on his mind lately; it’s nothing that a little support from me won’t do.”

“Well if you say so. I still say we have to set that for us to get to know each other more. I really want to know the person who’s been such an influence on my baby brother.”

“I don’t know about all of that.” said a modest Ken

“No really, before we moved here he was so shut off and seemed so depressed. Now that he has you, he’s happy. He loves life here, and frankly, I love life here when my little brother is happy.”

“Well, it does help that you accept him for who he is. He didn’t really care about our relationship while he thought that you didn’t love him anymore, all he cared about was trying to get back your love.”

“We could go on forever complementing each other here, let’s just call it a team effort.” suggested Lisa.

“So how about we meet tomorrow for lunch at Vince’s?” asked Ken

“That sounds good. It’s a date.” said Lisa “How about 12:30? Luke will be out driving Casey around to get some of his school stuff.”

“Okay that’s good.” they embraced and Ken left.

Their “get to know you” date went really well. They stayed and ate at the restaurant hat they chose for about an hour and a half. While they ate, they mostly talked about Luke, because he was pretty much all that they had in common. But they did accomplish what they had set the date for. They really got to pick each other’s brains apart.

They really enjoyed each other’s company. Both of them could see a really nice friendship coming soon. But they didn’t want to rush a friendship because they still really didn’t know each other that well. Also, Ken didn’t really feel right not telling Luke that they were meeting, but Lisa thought it was better if Luke didn’t know. Personally, Ken thought that if Luke found out later that they lied to him, the turnout would be much, much worse than if they just came out and told him that they had a lunch date.

So without Lisa knowing, Ken told Luke that they had set a lunch date to get to know each other better. He didn’t really care; he thought it was good that they were trying to get to know each other. Ken knew that it would be better just to tell him, but he would be lying if he said that he wasn’t a little nervous when he started to tell him.

Something also intrigued Ken about how worried Luke was about Judy. What if she was being abused? What if she was? And they didn’t do anything to help her; Ken would never be able to forgive himself. Ken thought that he might talk to Judy without Luke there, because he didn’t doubt that Luke would certainly take things overboard.

Meanwhile…at the Thomas residence

Frank Thomas was hitting Judy, but she was too scared of him to admit it to anyone. Everyday, when he gets home in the afternoon, he’s so angry. She doesn’t know how to calm him down. She had caught on that having his dinner ready in time for him to be home was a one of the ways to calm him down.

One day, about three days after Luke and Ken made their little visit to her house. His dinner took a little bit longer to cook than she expected, he also just so happened to be more mad than usual. So when he realized that his dinner wasn’t ready, he went over the edge.

He snuck up behind Judy, while she was trying to speed up the cooking process any which way she could and while she didn’t know it. He rapped his arm around her neck. The tongs that she had her hand went flying into the wall in front of the stove. As he had his arm around her neck, he punched her twice in the kidneys. He let her go, and then she screamed and knelt in pain.

“I told you to always have my dinner ready for me you bitch. You even fuck that up don’t you?” said Frank

“I’m sorry” said Judy trying to catch her breathe

“No, no, you’re not sorry. You’re just trying to piss me off on purpose, you’re such a bitch.” he said, and then he kicked her in the ribs; she screamed.

Then he grabbed her hair and pulled her up from the floor. He pulled her behind him by her hair. He took her to their bedroom, and then threw her up against the wall. He ran straight towards her, pinned her to the wall by her shoulders with his hands. Then he licked her cheek, she had a disgusted look on her face.

“What’s the matter bitch, you fucking whore, don’t you like it huh. Don’t you like it?”

“Go to hell” said Judy quietly.

“What you say to me?” asked Frank

“You heard me.” she said, then she spit into his face.

“You bitch!” he said right before he slapped her across the face.

Just then she escaped from his arms. She ran out of the room, and then down the stairs. She went into the kitchen and got the biggest knife that she could find. He finally caught up to her.

“What are you gonna do with that knife huh? You don’t have the guts.”

“You think I won’t do it, don’t you?”

“Of course you won’t, you love me too much.”

“Oh, you fucker of course you think I love you, you’re such a fucking pig. Now I’m only going to say this once. You get out of this house, and leave my family alone.” said Judy

“You mean our family.” said Frank

“No, my family; you lost the rights to your family when you decided to start beating on them, taking out your anger about Rachel’s death on us.”

“Don’t you talk about how I should take my daughter’s death.” said Frank

“I agree that you should be able to take Rachel’s death any way that you please, but not by beating on your family, that’s not the way to do it.” Frank started to weep.

“No I want you to get out of this house, and take all of your shit with you.”

“But, Judy, I can change, I promise.”

“I don’t think so Frank. I’m not taking this shit from you anymore. If you don’t leave, I’m going to call the police.”

As soon as frank heard the word police, he agreed that the best thing to do was just leave. He didn’t want any trouble, and he certainly didn’t want his kids to have to see him in jail. He really felt that he could change, but he didn’t blame Judy for not believing him. He’d done so many horrible things to her and the kids.

So he left Daily Lane, and never ever came back. Judy was glad to be rid of that jerk. She was happier than ever after he had left Daily Lane. Ken never tried to ask Judy if she was being abused by Frank. He just figured that it was none of his business, which was right on the money. It comforted him after Frank left, it also reassured his suspicions that something was going on in the Thomas household.
