Daily Lane Ch.2: The Midnight Strangler pt.1
|
Rachel Thomas was walking down the street, towards Luke’s house, which was about eight houses down from hers. She had just passed two houses when she saw Luke driving down the street to leave. She signaled for him to pull over so he did. Luke rolled his window down, and she bent down to talk to him.
“Hey what’s up?” asked Luke.
“Actually I was just walking over to go see you.”
“Why”
“I just was going to go say hello. So where are you headed?” asked Rachel
“I was just going to pick Ken up from work. He got his car taken away.”
“You guy’s have become really close friends, haven’t you?” asked Rachel
For a minute Luke wasn’t going to tell Rachel that they were going out, but then he remembered that her and Ken had a bet on how fast that she could get him to go out with her. But then, he realized that that situation wasn’t really fair to Rachel. She deserved to know the truth; that she didn’t have even the slightest chance of getting him to go out with her.
“Um, listen Rachel; there’s something that you should know about me and Ken.”
“What” asked Rachel
“I know about your little bet with him.”
“That little shit told you about our bet.”
“Yeah, I don’t think that it would be fair to you if I didn’t tell you why he made the bet in the first place.”
“What are you talking about?” Luke looked at the clock in his car.
“Oh crap, I’m gonna be late. Why don’t you get in, and I’ll explain it all to you on the way.”
“Okay, I have nothing better to do anyway.” So they left. “So what were you going to tell me?” asked Rachel.
“Rachel, I’m not going to go out with you.”
“Why not, just because of that tiny bet. Come on, Luke, we could be good together.”
“No, not because of the bet, and I really doubt that we would be good together.”
“So if it’s not because of the bet, then why? Why wouldn’t we good together?” asked Rachel
“Rachel, I’m gay.”
“What? Are you serious?”
“Yeah, the only reason that Ken made the bet with you is because he knew.”
“Why did you tell him?” asked Rachel.
“It’s complicated; we really hit it off when he showed me around town; I trusted him.” said Luke.
“But you said that I needed to know something about you and Ken. What does you being gay have to do with Ken?”
“Ken and I are boyfriends, Rachel”
“Whoa, wait am minute; Ken’s gay too?”
“I know”
“That sucks, the guy that I’m going for ends up going for my neighbor, who’s another guy.” said Rachel
“Well, when you put it that way.”
“Wow, so you and Ken; I hope you guys are happy together.”
“Oh we are.”
“Well that’s good.”
“Well here we are, now we just have to wait.”
An awkward silence fell between the two. Luke didn’t know what to say, and Rachel sure didn’t know what to say. Luke decided to turn the radio to maybe cut some of that tension in half. It helped a little, but it was gone as soon as Ken walked out of the little clothing store that he works at. He saw Rachel and was immediately confused.
Why was she there? Why was she with Luke? He would’ve never admitted it, but he was jealous. He was jealous even though he knew that Luke was gay, and they were together. But he also knew that Rachel had a knack for making things go in her direction. Rachel courteously moved to the back seat so that Ken could sit in the front with Luke.
When Ken got in, Luke stretched over to give him a kiss. Ken pulled away, but Luke reassured him that Rachel knew everything. After this reveal, Ken was glad to give Luke a kiss, but when they did, it really hit Rachel that they were going out. She would have never thought that she would have as big a crush on someone as she did on Luke. It really hurt her when she found out that he didn’t have the same feelings, even more so that he wouldn’t have them for any girl.
“I’m real sorry Rae, that we kept things from you. We were just so happy together that we forgot to fill you in.” said Ken.
“I can understand that, no worries.”
“We should all hang out sometime.” suggested Luke, as he pulled out into the street.
“Oh…ah, yeah we should” said Ken. He was kind of hesitant because he and Rachel were never really friends, just acquaintances.
“I don’t know, I don’t really want to be the third wheel between you two.” said Rachel.
“Well then, we’ll get you date. It can be a double date.” suggested Luke.
“But with who?” asked Ken.
“Wait, I don’t know about this.” said Rachel
“Wait, wait wait; what about Tim Snider” suggested Ken.
“No, not him” said Rachel
“Who’s Tim Snider?” asked Luke
“He’s the second eldest of the Snider boys; there are four of them.”
“Wow, are any of them cute.” said Luke, just playing around.
“Hey, hey, hey, you’re mine, so you can forget about those Snider boys.”
“Aww, I love it when you fight for me.” said Luke as he reached over to give Ken a kiss.
“So Tim Snider, huh; I guess he’s kind of cute.” said Rachel.
“Good, I’ll set it up. When are you guys free?” asked Ken
“I’m free this Saturday.” said Luke
“So am I” said Rachel.
“I can take the night off this Saturday.” said Ken “Now we just have to see whether or not Tim is into a double date with a gay couple.”
“I’m sure he will be. I don’t know him that well, but I think that I would’ve noticed if he was a homophobe.”
