The next afternoon at the party, he met up with Luke. He introduced them to the Thomas’ and the rest of the neighborhood, but the first person he introduced Luke to was Rachel Thomas; the Thomas’ oldest child. She was sixteen. As soon as he introduced them, she pulled Ken aside to talk.

“He does Luke have a girlfriend ‘cause he is hot.” asked Rachel.

Hearing this amused Ken because he knew that he had a better chance at getting Luke than she did, but he was also kind of jealous because he knew how Rachel could be with the guys that she liked. She would usually be all over them, in Ken’s opinion, like a slut.

“No I don’t think he has a girlfriend.”

“Alright, score. He’s gonna be my man by the end of the summer.”

“Wanna put money on that.”

“Any day; twenty bucks say I have him by the end of the summer.”

“I can deal with that.” said Ken as they shook hands.

So Rachel went over to talk to Luke and Ken left them alone. He thought that we would wait awhile until he stole Luke away from her. So he mingled with the other guests for about twenty minutes then went back to where Luke and Rachel were. They were still were, Luke looking bored out of his mind, and Rachel talking up a storm; so he goes up to them.

“Hey Luke, wanna come get a Starbucks with me?” asked Ken.

“Sure, let’s go” said Luke.

“Can I come?” asked Rachel.

“No, maybe next time, just me and Ken for today.” said Luke

They both left, Rachel with her mad face on, and Ken with his happy one. As they left they walked passed Kira and she whispered into Ken’s ear.

“Going somewhere with your boyfriend

“Shut up Kira” Ken whispered back angrily.

They left the party, gladly. Luke was getting talked to death by Rachel, and Ken was bored to tears, only because he wasn’t with Luke the whole time.

“So what’s up with that Rachel chick? She’s so weird.” asked Luke as they sat down waiting for their coffee.

“She likes you man”

“She does!?”

“It’s actually kind of funny. She actually thinks that you’ll be going out by the end of the summer.”

“You didn’t say anything to her did you.”

“No actually, I think you’ll get a kick out of this one.”

“What”

“I bet her twenty bucks that you wouldn’t be going out by the end of the summer.”

“Ha, ha, ha; that is funny. Well that’s one way to make an easy twenty bucks.”

“To tell you the truth, I was kind of jealous that she liked you.”

“What”

“I mean I kind of have a little crush on you now. I know we only met like two days ago, but we hit it off so well yesterday, who could resist you.”

“I thought you liked Brad?”

“Yeah, but Brad’s straight.”

“Oh so you can’t have Brad so I’m the replacement.”

“It’s not like that at all. Ever since you answered your door the other afternoon, I haven’t been able to get you out of my mind.”

“To tell you the truth, Ken, I haven’t been able to get you out of my mind either. I’m sorry about blowing up at you just now.”

“It’s okay, I’d react the same way too if I had thought that I was a second choice.” says Ken as he reaches for Luke’s hand. Then Luke pulls away. “What’s wrong” asked Ken.

“I just don’t want someone to see than it get back to Lisa. I wouldn’t be able to handle that.”

“That’s understandable, but you the best way to handle that is to just tell her that you’re gay.”

“I know”

“I really want to be with you.” said Ken

“I wanna be with you to.”

“We can’t be together if Lisa doesn’t know about you.”

“I know, but how do I tell her.”

“Just sit her down, and tell her. You don’t have to build up to it if you don’t want to, you could just tell her.”

“I don’t know. I want to be with you, but I don’t want to tell her.”

“This is the only way.”

“Maybe I can just say we’re best friends or something.”

“Luke, we just met.”

“Well, we want to go out with each other, isn’t that more juristic than being best friends after just meeting.”

“I guess, but sooner or later you’re going to have to tell her. It would be better sooner, ‘cause the longer draw it out, the harder it’ll be to tell her.”

Just then they saw Jeremy Craig walk into the Starbucks. He noticed Ken and Luke, and went over to say hello.

“He guys, fancy seeing you here” said Jeremy

“Hey Jeremy” said Ken

“Hey Mr. Craig”

“So formal, just call me Jeremy, you make me sound like an old man. Mind if I join you?”

“Not at all, and your timing couldn’t be more perfect.” said Ken.

“Why, what’s going on?” asked Jeremy.

“Luke here is batting for our team, Jeremy.”

“Really alright, so what’s the problem?” asked Jeremy.

“Well I guess you could say we’ve hit it off for the past few days, and we want to continue, but that’s kind of a problem with his big sister not knowing that Luke’s gay and all.”

“Aww, you two an item; that’s so sweet, but no matter what the circumstances, coming out to the people you love is always hard. You can’t push him into that Ken.”

“Thank you Mr.…Jeremy.” said Luke.

“Well your welcome Luke. But I do have to say that if you want to have a public relationship with someone, you should be out to everyone, it saves confusion, and prevents pain. So the best way to have a relationship with Ken is to just tell your sister and be done with it. She seemed to be okay with me and Robert, so I don’t think she has a problem with gay people.”

“Oh yeah, where is Robert anyway?” asked Ken

“Oh he went to New York City on a business trip. He left this morning.” answered Jeremy.

“Well thank you, Jeremy, for the advice. I think I will tell my sister. I really like Ken, and I want to see how far this can go.” said Luke.

“Well I’ll leave you two love birds to your date.”

Jeremy grabbed his coffee, and then left the Starbucks. Luke and Ken stayed a while longer just to chat. Luke was embracing the idea of coming out more and more the longer him and Ken talked. After they left Starbucks, Luke was adamant about coming out. He wanted to be with Ken and nothing was going to get in his way. By the time that they got back to the neighborhood, the birthday party had been over for about forty-five minutes. Ken dropped Luke off at his house.

“Do you want me to come in with you, for support?” asked Ken.

“No, it’s okay. I can do this by myself, but maybe come in like ten minutes or just wait here, and ring the bell in like ten minutes okay. Just in case she goes ballistic.” said Luke.

“Okay, anything you need.” replied Ken.

So Luke left Ken’s car and went up the walkway of his house. He wanted to come out, but he was still scared. So he walked up that walkway as slow as possible. He didn’t know why he was so afraid. Maybe it’s that he and Lisa are so close, and he didn’t wanna possibly ruin that relationship between the tow of them. He walked through the front door so slow that the door made a creaking sound. He looked around to see if anyone was down stairs. It looked like just Lisa was in the living room watching television, which was perfect.  So he walked up to her and sat right beside her on the couch.

“Hey what’s up bro?” asked Lisa.

“I need to talk to you Lisa.” said Luke

“Sure what’s up?” asked Lisa.

“First you have to promise me that you love me no matter what.”

“Of course I do, you’re my brother, we’re family, no matter what. What’s going on here? Are you in some kind of trouble?”

“No, I’m not in trouble. I just need to tell you something.”

“Well what is it, just tell me.”

“I’m gay.”

“What”

“Please don’t make me say it again; it was hard enough the first time.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Lisa, sis, I’m gay.”

“I heard you the first time. Do you have to keep saying it like that?”

“Lisa, what’s wrong.”

“Excuse me, but you just told me you’re…”

“Gay”

“Stop saying that word!”

“Lisa, I’m your brother. Please tell me that you still love me.”

“I don’t know if I can Luke.”

“What”

“I mean, you just come up with this out of nowhere, and I’m just supposed to accept it.”

“No you’re supposed to accept me, your brother.”

“Don’t say that, you’re not the brother I know; the one who told me everything. I knew you were keeping something from me, but I just didn’t see this coming.”

“Lisa, please, do you still love me?”

“I keep going through my head trying to think of what mom and dad would say about this, and I can’t say that they would be happy, but I do think that they would accept you.”

“Thank you, Lisa”

“But that doesn’t mean I accept you.”

“What, Lisa”

“You’re my brother, Luke, I love you and I just…”

Just then the doorbell rang. Luke knew it was Ken at the door. Lisa called for Amanda to come from downstairs to answer he door; she did.

“Luke, its Ken at the door!” yelled Amanda.

“Tell him he needs to come back later, Amanda!” yelled Lisa.

“No. Let him in Amanda!” yelled Luke. Ken walked into the living room.

“Luke I don’t think that this is the best time for Ken to come over.”

“I asked him to come over.”

“What’s going on?” asked Amanda curiously.

Luke walked over to Amanda and knelt down to her level.

“We’re having a grown up talk right now Amanda, can you please go up to your room until Lisa says it’s alright to come down.”

“Okay”

“Thanks, Hun” says Amanda as she goes back upstairs.

“What do you mean you asked Ken to come over?”

“I asked him to come over just in case you reacted like this.”

“Like what”

“Like you hated me”

“Luke, I could never hate you. I hate this decision you’ve made.”

“Decision; you think that this is a decision. Trust me Lisa, if gay people were able to make a decision between being gay or straight, they wouldn’t choose to be gay.”

“Wait a minute, Ken knew before I did.”

“Yes”

“You’ve known me all your life, and you don’t tell me. You’ve known Ken for two days and he already knows.”

“It’s not like that Lisa, he understands me”

“What do you mean he understands you? Wait, I get it. You’re gay too, aren’t you Ken?”

“Yes Lisa, I am” replied Ken.

“So YOU are the one who turned my brother gay.”

“Lisa, he didn’t do anything to me, except care for me.”

“You know what. I don’t want to see your face anymore. I want to you to leave.”

“What”

“Not forever, just for a few days to help me clear my head.”

“Where am I supposed to go?”

“I don’t care where you go, just get out of my face for a few days.”

“Well can I at least say goodbye to Casey and Amanda?”

“No, I don’t want them to worry. I’ll tell them something.”

“A lie”

“Yes a lie. I’m not going to tell them that you’re…”

“You can’t even say it, can you?”

“Just leave”

“Can I at least pack some things?”

“Sure, but don’t make too much noise. I don’t want Amanda or Casey to hear you.”

Luke went upstairs to pack his stuff. He was very upset that his sister acted like that, and Ken felt a little responsible. So, once they got into Luke’s room, he felt the need to apologize.

“Luke, I’m so sorry. If I hadn’t pushed you into coming out, you would never be fighting with your sister.”

“Ken, this isn’t your fault. Like you said, it would’ve had to happen sooner or later. I’m just glad that I have you to support me.”

“But maybe…”

“But maybe nothing; I did this because I wanted to. I did this because I want to be with you, and not anything is going to stop that from happening, not even my sister.” He said as he gave Ken a peck on the cheek. “I’m just worried about where I’m going to go.”

“You can stay with me. Believe it or not, even with all my brothers and sisters, we still have a spare room.”

“I don’t know. I don’t want to impose on your parents.”

“It’s a guest room. You would be our guest. Plus, it’s no imposition, there are used to a crowded house.”

“Well, maybe if you can ask, but don’t push them. If they don’t want me in their house, it’s okay. I can maybe ask Jeremy if I could stay with him, or go to a local shelter.”

“Nonsense, you’re not going to any homeless shelter.”

Once, Luke finished packing his things, they left the house. They left without so much as a goodbye. Luke didn’t like leaving on bad terms, but he had no choice. Ken drove Luke the ten seconds or so to his house. Ken looked at the driveway, his dad wasn’t home. Hopefully his mom can make a choice without his dad being around. They went inside. Jenny and Kira were on the couch watching a movie.

“Mom can we talk for a second”

“Sure Kenny, what’s up? Hi Luke”

“Hi Jenny”

“Kira can you give us some privacy for a second.”

“Why”

Kira, give your brother and me some privacy.”

“Huh, okay” said Kira

Ken waited until Kira left.

“Mom, can Luke stay here for a couple of days?”

“Why what’s happened?” asked Jenny

“I got into an argument with my sister and she told me to leave for a few days until she thinks everything through.”

“Oh you poor thing, of course you can stay here for a couple of days.”

“Are you sure, ‘cause I can go to the local shelter, or I have an uncle that lives like an hour away.”

“Are you crazy, you are not going to a homeless shelter, and you are not living that far away from home. You’re staying right here with us.”

“Thanks so much Jenny.” after this she called Kira to show him to the guest room.

“Mom I could have shown him the room.’

“I know Honey, but I wanted to ask you something.”

“What”

“Did he do something bad to get in trouble like this, because if he did you need to tell me. We can’t have a deviant living in our house.”

“No mom nothing like that”

“Then what happened that’s so bad that his sister had to kick him out?”

“Mom, he’s gay.”

“He’s gay”

“and he told his sister, and she freaked.”

“Oh, poor thing; I have to go talk to him.”

“No mom, leave that to me. I’m kind of responsible anyway.”

“Why is that Hun?”

“Because I’m the one who pushed him into coming out”

“Oh, Honey; if he didn’t want to come out he would’ve never done it in the first place, you had nothing to do with this.”

“That’s what Luke said, but I still feel guilty. I mean, come on mom, he has nowhere to stay.”

“He has here, and he has you to support him through this.”

“I guess you’re right”

“Of course I’m right, I’m your mother. Now go up there and comfort your friend.”

“Oh, and mom”

“Yes Hun”

“Just to let you know, the reason he came out is so we could be together.”

“Really, you mean…you two are together?”

“Yes”

“How romantic”

Mom

“Okay, okay; but no fooling around up there”

Mom

“Okay, sorry, I’m just letting you know.”
