Daily Lane: Family Turmoil pt.2
|
The next morning, Luke took the car to go scope out the town. He thought that he would call Ken and ask him to show him around town and show him the hotspots for parties. He called, and Ken seemed reluctant to accept, but did. He picked Ken up at his house which was two houses down and across from Luke’s. At first it was kind of awkward because they didn’t really know each other, but it eased up a bit when Luke turned on the radio. They seemed to like the same type of music, because when Luke turned the radio on, Ken got excited when his favorite song came on.
So Ken directed him to a few hang out spot for him and his friends; the local Starbucks, the local bookshop, and stuff like that, and then gave him directions to Brad Gramm’s house. He was the local party thrower. If there was a party in town, it was most likely at Brad’s house. They stopped and talked to Brad for a while, but it got kind of awkward and Ken opted to leave. Luke really didn’t understand why until they got into the car and thought back to the conversations with his mother, the afternoon before, and with Brad. He said “Not everyone is like me.” He decided to ask Ken about the situation.
“So Ken, why did you want to get out of there so fast? I mean, you were pretty adamant about going there in the first place, what happened?” asked Luke.
“It was nothing, it just got awkward is all.” responded Ken.
“Not for me. I liked the guy. He seemed pretty cool.” said Luke
“I was just awkward ok drop it.”
“What’s the matter don’t you like him?” asked Luke
“What!...oh yeah, sure I like him. He’s a cool guy.”
“Ken, your caught, I saw the way that you were looking at him.” said Luke.
“What do you mean? I wasn’t looking at him in any way.”
“You’re hot for the guy, I can tell that face anywhere.”
“What do ya mean? I’m not gay man.” said Ken.
“Okay and I’m the Pope. Dude, its okay I am too.”
“What, are you serious? I would’ve never thought that…”
“That I was gay. Same fore me, I didn’t really suspect until I saw you looking at Brad hat way.”
“Hey, can you not tell anyone when we get to school. Nobody there knows yet.”
“But your parents know.”
“Yeah m parents know, that’s why my mom was pushing me to make friends with you. I guess you made quite an impression on her. What about your sisters or your brother. Do any of them know?” said Ken.
“No, I haven’t worked up the courage to tell any of them yet. Lisa and I are really close but I’m really afraid to tell her.”
“Why?” asked Ken.
“I guess it’s because were so close that I’m afraid to tell her.”
“Shouldn’t that make it easier?” asked Ken.
“I guess. I don’t know. Listen if you want to go back home knows the time to say.”
“Well, I don’t really want to go back there, my moms always on my case about meeting a guy to be with, let’s just go the mall or something.”
“Okay. Where’s it at?” asked Luke.
“It’s just about a mile down this road we’re on here.”
So they went to the mall; the car ride there after their talk was somewhat awkward, but not uncomfortable. Ken finally felt like he had someone to talk to, someone that he could trust. The mall was pretty big. It had two stories, so it took them a while to walk through the whole thing. They walked through some stores, but Luke, or Ken, didn’t really have enough money to buy anything. They had about enough money collectively to get a quick bite to eat.
So they went back to the food court to grab a bite. They were enjoying themselves quite a bit. They each found an unexpected friend out of each other. They each thought about it maybe becoming more than a friendship, but they also each were embarrassed to mention it. They sat in the food court, chatting and eating, and enjoying themselves. When they were done they decided that it was kind of late, and that they should get back home. So Luke went to go drop off Ken at his house.
“So thanks again for showing me around town. I had a really good time.”
“You’re welcome; I had a good time too. Maybe we could do this again sometime.” suggested Ken still sitting in the car.
“Sure I would like that.”
“Okay I’ll call you, what’s your number.”
“Oh here” Luke takes a piece of paper off the dash and a pen from the center console and writes his cell phone number on it.”
“Thanks, see you later.” says Ken as he’s getting out of the car.
Luke drove away; Ken looked up and saw his sister Kira out on the porch. She was only a year younger than him, but they weren’t as close as Luke and Lisa. She was also the only sibling that knew he was gay. She saw him walk up the steps with a grin from ear to ear and couldn’t help but tease him.
“Was that your boyfriend?”
“Shut up Kira, he’s just a friend.”
“Oh sure, that’s why you have your Colgate smile on exhibition.”
“His family just moved into the Henderson’s old house and I was just showing him around town.”
“Is he gay?’
“Yeah so”
“Oh my gosh, he is totally your boyfriend.”
“Just shut up Kira, he’s just a friend okay.”
“Okay” she said as he entered the house.
Ken went into the house as happy as can be. So happy that he walked right passed his mother without even knowing. She wasn’t going to let him go without asking what happened with Luke.
“Hey, Kenny; so you’re just going to walk right passed me without telling me how it went.”
“Mom, it’s not like it was a date. I was just showing him around town.”
“Well, where did you go?”
“To the bookshop and to the mall and stuff.”
“Where you polite?”
“Yes, mom, I was polite.”
“Did you two have fun; are you going to be friends?”
“Yes mom we had fun, and yes we’re going to be friends. Can I go now?”
“Well good, and yes you can go up to your room now.”
Ken wasn’t necessarily thrilled with his mother being so nosey, but he knew that it was better than the alternative; her not accepting who he is at all. He went to his room and went straight to his computer to write what had happened today in his private blog. Before he knew that Luke was gay, he liked Brad, whom he knew was straight. Luke was Ken’s new crush, but what was torture was that he didn’t know how Luke felt about him. He was writing in his blog when his mother knocked on his door.
“Come in” said Ken
“Sorry to bother you Kenny, but Judy Thomas is having a birthday party tomorrow for little Michael, he’s turning nine, do you want to come with us.” asked Jenny.
“No it’s okay mom, little kids’ birthday parties aren’t really my style.”
“Are you sure, Judy said that Wallace family was coming.”
“Really”
“So Luke’s going to be there, you’ll have someone to hang around with.”
“Okay, I guess I’ll go then.” said Ken, and then his mother left the room
He tried to play it off, but once he heard that Luke was going to be there, he was so excited to go. He even wrote in his blog that he was excited about the party. He never would have thought that he would be excited about a kid’s ninth birthday party.
