David
|
As David gazed at the sunset he came to realize that the only emotion he had every truly felt was loneliness, and he had never felt as lonely as he did in that exact moment; the exact moment of his realization. Yes, he had friends to keep him company, but they weren’t like him. Yes, he loved his family; who loved him back, but they weren’t like him. He felt alone, he felt that there was no one in this world like him, and there would never be.
He became disgusted with this feeling. He grabbed his car keys from his pocket, moved them around in his hand, and then singled out the key to his car. He then turned around and headed towards his copper colored Toyota, pressed the unlock button on his alarm pad, and then got in. He sat in the car for a few minutes to wallow in his disgust.
He started the car. He’s driving, but he has no idea where to. He doesn’t want to go home, because he feels separated from his parents. He doesn’t want to go to the mall, because he might run into one of his friends, and he doesn’t feeling like putting up with anybody’s cheery disposition. There was only one place that he could think of going, to the movies. Movies, no matter what genre, always made David feel feels as if all of his problems had gone away, at least for a two hour span.
When he had gotten out of the movie theater, it was dark outside. When he saw this, he panicked in the realization that he didn’t call his parents to say that he would be out late. So he got in his car and raced back to his house, hoping that his parents would already be in bed, so that way he wouldn’t have to explain to them why he was out so late and why he didn’t tell them he would be out so late. He parked his car in front of the house, made his way up the steps, and then carefully tried to open the big wooden door that his parents had just bought. He poked his head in; the lights were off. A sigh of relief came upon him; his parents were asleep, but the same could not be said for his little brother; Peter.
David had assumed that Peter was probably not asleep, so therefore he still had to be careful. Peter was only thirteen, and would snitch on him in a second. He slowly crept across the front of Peter’s bedroom door to get to his. David hadn’t been big on religion, but he was praying for his brother not to hear him. After he was past Peter’s bedroom he still had to get past his little sister Hannah’s room. Hannah worships the ground that David walks on. She’s the youngest, and that’s how it tends to go in families. Hannah was only eight, but she wanted to be with David every second. David didn’t mind, but if she ever tried to do that to Peter, he would have a fit, and probably hurt her.
David had made it safely back to his room without waking anybody in house up with his probably loud walking. David felt really out of place in his family, like he didn’t belong, like he was different. The rest of his family was pretty close to each other, he was only close to Hannah. Her simple mind couldn’t pick up on the difference of attitude coming from David. When he got into his room, he took a load off and lay on his bed reading Frankenstein. After a few pages he changed for bed then, went off to dreamland.
The next morning he woke up to the smell of bacon and the screaming of Hannah, who probably didn’t want to get ready for school, Hannah hated school, but David was always encouraging her to go. David loved school, and if he wanted to get away from this family that he didn’t relate to he needed to get an education. He woke up, threw a shirt on, then his slippers, then made his way to the bathroom that he shared with peter who was still in bed because he couldn’t hear his mother yelling at Peter for being such a shit head. He brushed his teeth and threw some water on is face to help him wake up. He then made his way towards the kitchen/ dining room, where his mother was cooking breakfast.
“Good morning David.” said his mother.
“Morning mom.” replied David.
“Would you like some breakfast; some pancakes, maybe some bacon?” asked his mother.
“No thanks mom, I’ll just have some toast and some orange juice.” answered David.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, I’m not rally in the mood to eat.”
“Okay, if you’re sure, but can you do me a favor and wake up your brother. Then can you please see if you can get your sister to get ready for school.”
“Okay” he sighed then made his way towards his brother’s room. He opened the door and he wasn’t in his room, so he checked the bathroom, and he wasn’t in there either.
“Mom” he said loudly.
“Yes.” she answered.
“Peter snuck out again.”
“God damn that brother of yours. Go wake up your father.” said his mother in anger.
“Okay.” said David. So he went to go wake up his father, who was asleep because he works the night shift.
“Dad,” David whispered while giving his dad a light shake, “dad; wake up.”
“Huh?” his father grunted.
“Peter snuck out again.”
“Take the car and go look for him would ya.” said his dad who was to sleepy to get up. “You can stay home from school if it takes long.”
“Okay dad.” said David, who was really disappointed in his younger brother.
It was David’s guess that the reason that Peter was always sneaking out and running away, was that he was getting into drugs. David ad hated this thought but he knew that it was a great possibility. However, he didn’t want to tell his parents that that is what he had thought it was because he did not want to worry them. They thought that he was just being a teenager, and David thought it best to let them keep thinking that.
So he obeyed his father, but first he had gotten his sister ready, had her eat; then he drove her to school. Afterward, he went to all of Peter’s ‘Hang Out’ spots. He was at none of them. He questioned one of his friends at his last stop. It was a friend that he had found out Peter had made through one of his friends at school. His friend Adam had a little brother, the same age, who knew this same guy that was David’s age.
“Hello, are you Mr. Grey?” asked David
“Yeah, who wants to know.” said Mr. Grey. He was tall about half a foot taller than Peter who was 5’9”. He had long dark hair, with sunglasses on.
“David Kingston; Peter’s older brother.”
“Ah Pete, he’s one of my best customers.” said Mr. Grey.
“What do you mean customers?” asked David.
“He buys from me regularly.”
“Okay, okay. I don’t even want to know what you sell. I just wanna know if you’ve seen him lately.” said David
“No I haven’t seen him since last night.” said Mr. Grey.
“Did he say where he was going?”
“No sorry, he didn’t.” said Mr. Grey.
“Okay thanks.” said David.
So David left Mr. Grey’s house, once again in search for his little brother. With no clue other than he’s behind his brother by, at the most, twelve hours. As much as he could not stand his little shit head brother, he was still his little brother. He was family, he loved him, and he was very worried about him. So he was driving around town practically in circles, frantically looking for Peter. He was about ten miles away from home, in a very bad neighborhood; the only one in town. He went in and out of the streets, looking desperately. He had no luck finding Peter. It was almost time for him to go to school, so he stopped looking and started to make his way towards the high school.
On the way there he called his father to let him know that he’d stopped looking for him. His father seemed a little angry over the phone but he reassured David that it was because Peter had done this disappearing act once again and worrying his mother to death. David felt bad that his parents were going through all of this stress because of his little brother and he couldn’t do anything about it. He wished that he had found Peter so that way he could beat some sense into him; but yet again he is no where to be found.
At school he was somewhat distracted. As much as he said that he loathed his little brother; he would never want anything bad to happen to him. He was distracted, and his friends had noticed it; especially his best friend Jason. Jason was the best friend that anyone could ever ask for. He was the first person that David told that he had certain feelings that might make him different from most people. Jason wasn’t sue what to make of that statement, of course it was very vague, but he thought that he should support his best friend, in whatever he was feeling. So when David came to school somewhat distracted, Jason was worried about his friend. So between classes he decided to confront him.
“Hey David, are you okay?” asked Jason.
“Yeah I’m okay. It’s just that Peter ran way again last night. Only we didn’t find him this time. I’m just kind of upset about it.” replied David.
“But I thought that you hated your brother?” asked Jason.
“Yeah, but when he’s out there doing drugs or whatever he does, something bad could happen to him, he could die, and I don’t want that to happen, he’s my brother.” said David.
“Yes of coarse, I’m sorry.”
“There’s nothing for you to be sorry about, it’s not your fault that Peter does what he does. It isn’t your fault that he causes my parents an enormous amount of pain and stress everyday.” said David. Just then he got a call on his cell phone. It was Peter’s cell phone number.
“Hello, Peter. Where are you?” asked David.
“Sir, does this number belong to anyone you know. Yes, he’s my brother. Who are you, what’ve you done with him?”
“My name is Dr. Kingston, of the emergency room at Mercy Hospital. Your brother has just been brought in. He had no identification on him so we called the number that he last called. I suggest you get over here quickly. Your brother is dying, we’ll do everything we can for him, but we’ll give you major details when you get here.” said the Doctor.
“Who took him there?” asked David.
“He was brought in anonymously,” said the doctor, “please get here as soon as you can.”
“I’ll be right there.” said David. He hung up the phone.
“Who was that?” asked Jason.
“That was and ER doctor fro mercy hospital. He found my number on Peter’s phone. Peter’s hurt. I have to go check on him.” answered David.
“Do you want me to go with you?” asked Jason.
“No, you stay here at school. I’ll call you later today.” said David.
“Okay; see you later.” said Jason.
“Bye.” said David as he rushed to his car to go see Peter.
David drove as fast as he could given the speed limit; his heart pounding with worry about his brother. He got to the hospital, and ran into the ER. He found the desk and asked the nurse for Dr. Kingston as he was trying to catch his breath. She directed him towards the doctor’s station. He rushed over; as he turned the corner he saw a doctor and wondered if he was the doctor that he was looking for.
“Excuse me, are you Dr. Kingston?” asked David breathing heavy.
“Yes, are you the gentleman I spoke with on the phone?” said the doctor as he shook David’s hand.
“Yes, you said you have my brother here.” said David.
“Your brother requested that you not tell your parents, but since he is a minor, it’s up to you on whether or not you want to respect his wishes.” said Dr. Kingston.
“Yes I will respect his wishes, but what happened to him?” asked David.
“Your brother suffered a cocaine overdose. My team is still currently racing against the clock to get your brother to wake up. We were successful for a moment that’s when told him that we called you and then he asked if you wound not tell your parents; but right after he said that he passed out again. I’m afraid that your brother is in a coma.”
David did not know what to make of this. He knew that his brother was doing drugs, but he did not know to what extent. His first instinct was to ask to see him, but he was afraid that he might kill Peter himself. So his first reaction was to ask he doctor how long he might be in the coma.
“Well, it depends on how his body reacts to the drugs and the medicine that we have given him.” said the doctor.
“But the thing is I can’t just not tell my parents that their son is in a coma.” said David.
“Your right; think that you should tell them, and I think that you should be the one to tell them.” said the doctor.
“Okay, well I’ll stay here for a little while maybe he’ll come out of it. If he does, maybe I can avoid telling them. Does his insurance cover this?” asked David.
“Yes it does, so no worries, but just one question.” said the doctor.
“Sure.” said David.
“Why do you not want to tell your parents about him?”
“Well, they’ve been really stressed out lately, mainly because of Peter. I just don’t want to add to their turmoil. I mean I always say how much I hate my brother, and telling my parents might get him in big, but inside I really love my little brother, and I don’t want to see him sent away to some military or boarding school. I just know that my parents will go to those lengths, but I also know that it won’t help him any. It might just make him worse.”
“Okay; that’s understandable. How long do you plan to wait?” asked the doctor.
So the doctor went to tend to his other patients, and David went to sit inside of Peter’s room. He sat right next to his bed. Eventually he got tired and fell asleep. He woke up to a tap on his hand. He had been resting in on the side of Peter’s bed. He lifted up his head and saw his brother wide awake.
“Hey you’re awake.” commented David.
“And you’re asleep on my bed” said Peter.
“You know what, that’s beside the point. You’re the one in the hospital in a coma due to cocaine overdose.”
“Spare me the lecture.” said Peter.
“Spare you the lecture! You’ve been snorting cocaine! Oh boy you are so lucky I didn’t tell mom and dad. Otherwise you’d be packing your bags to military school!” David scolded Peter.
“We have never gotten along, and now all of a sudden you’re protecting me from mom and dad” said Peter.
“You know what Peter, you’re my little brother. I will always care about what happens to you. No matter if we get along or not. So when you get out of here today, you are going to be a changed man. Yes I said man. You will kick your coke habit, and any other drug habit, and you will stop running away from home, and you will be god for mom and dad. That’s the man thing to do.”
“Why should I listen to you?” asked Peter.
“Because I’m your big brother, and I saved your ass, you ungrateful little shit.” scolded David.
After this lecture, Peter actually felt bad for his older brother. All of that time torturing David, it was all because he thought that David hated him, but in fact it was just the opposite. He then agreed to listen to what David said and kick his bad habits. After David signed his little brother out of the hospital, night had already fallen. The car ride home was awkwardly silent. Then out of nowhere Peter asks David a question.
“Hey David.” said Peter.
“Yeah,” replied David.
“Can I ask you a question?” asked Peter.
“Sure, anything.” said David.
“Are you gay?”
