Home, The Secret pt. II
|
Victor’s breathing became heavy. He couldn’t believe that he was finally going to tell them. They sat there waiting for him to say something. He was frozen. He didn’t know how to put the words together. Breath in, Breath out, Breath in, Breath out. Do it. Do it.
“I’m gay.” said Victor.
There was a pause in the room. Nobody knew what to say. Victor could see the color of his father’s face change from flash to bright red. He knew that he had hit a soft spot with his parents. His mother began to cry.
“It’s okay Victor, we still love you.” said Ben.
“The hell with that. Love would imply that he were a part of this family. No family member of mine is going to be a faggot.” said Dad.
“What?” Victor was confused.
“Dad; you can’t be serious, can you? I mean; this is your son. Just like me. You blood.” said Ben.
“Get the hell out of my house you faggot!” yelled Dad.
“Dad; what in the hell are you doing! You can’t kick him out. He’s your son for God’s sake! LOOK INTO HIS EYES!” Ben fought for Victor. Victor was speechless.
His mother was silent. She was not defending him. She just kept on crying. Victor got up, went to his room, and began to pack as much things into his suitcase as possible. Ben followed shortly.
“You don’t have to do this.” said Ben.
“Yes I do. It’s what he wants.” said Victor.
“He’s mad. He over reacted. He doesn’t know what he wants.” said Ben.
“Listen; Let me go and stay at Lacy’s for a while, just to give him a little time to cool off. If he does, I’ll move back. But if he doesn’t…I was wondering if I could come and stay with you?” said Victor.
“Victor, you’re my brother. You’re always welcome at my house. It’s no problem.” said Ben.
“Thanks Bro.” said Victor.
Ben started to leave the room when he that of something that he wanted to ask Victor
“Hey Victor...”
“Yeah Ben?”
“When did you, ah, realize, ah…”
“Fifth grade; I noticed in the fifth grade. There was this kid named Kevin. We were best friends, until I noticed that he had a crush on this girl named Vanessa. Then I noticed that while Kevin liked Vanessa; I liked Kevin more than I liked Vanessa, or any other girl in our class or even in the whole school.” replied Victor.
“Wow. That must have been tough to deal with.” said Ben.
“The tough part wasn’t dealing with it. The tough part was figuring out how I was going to tell you guys.” said Victor.
“Well, what about Thanksgiving dinner tonight? Where are you going to eat?” asked Ben.
“Well, the rest of Lacy’s family went to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving. Lacy’s parents didn’t think that that sort of vacation was appropriate for Thanksgiving, so they didn’t go. It’ll just be her immediate family for dinner and I think that they’ll let me eat with them.” answered Victor.
“That isn’t right, you should be eating Thanksgiving dinner with your family.” said Ben
“I think that dad might have a problem with that, seeming as he disowned me and all.” said Victor.
“Thanksgiving isn’t until tomorrow, maybe I can talk him into letting back at home.” said Ben.
“Even if you could, I wouldn’t want to come back. I’d rather give dad time to cool off on his own. It would be too awkward to handle if he was rushed into accepting my gayness. I want you guys to have a nice Thanksgiving; it won’t be nice if there’s tension and frustration in the air.” said Victor.
“I guess your right. Just be careful; and if the Ferguson’s don’t let you stay with them, just give me a call. My and I family pack their stuff, and we’ll take you home to have thanksgiving dinner with us.” said Ben.
“Okay.” said Victor.
So, Victor got in his car and drove the six miles to Lacy’s house in complete silence. No MP3 player, no CD player, No radio. He was in shock.
About half way to Lacy’s house, he pulled over to the side of the road. He put the car in park, then immediately began to cry his eyes out. He didn’t know what to do. What about school? Ben lives so far away. What about Eric and Lacy? Will he ever see them again?
He arrived at Lacy’s house, still flustered from crying. He rang the doorbell. Lacy’s mom answered the door.
“Mrs. Ferguson; is Lacy here.” asked Victor.
Lacy’s mom noticed that there was something wrong. His eyes were puffy and red. Lacy and he have been friends since the third grade. She’s hade him over for dinner many, many times. He’s like a son to her. So, she was naturally worried.
“Oh my goodness Victor; what happened? Are you okay?” said Mrs. F
“I’m fine Mrs. F, can you please just Lacy. Its important.” said Victor.
“Sure, come on inside. Make yourself comfortable. I’ll go get her.”
“Actually, if she’s in her room, I’d like to go up there if you don’t mind.” asked Victor.
“Sure, go right on up.” said Mrs. F
Victor slowly made his way up the stairs. Then he made his way to Lacy’s room. He knocked twice. She opened.
“Oh my God! What happened?”
“Long story, can I come in.” asked Victor.
“Sure.”
Victor sat on the bed.
“I told them. It didn’t go well.” she sat next to him on him bed. “Lacy, he kicked me out. My own father kicked me out.”
“What about your mom?” asked Lacy.
“Ha, my mom just sat there while he insulted me and claimed that I wasn’t his son and kicked me out.” replied Victor.
“I’m so sorry honey. Was there anyone that did stick up for you?” asked Lacy.
“Yeah, of all people to stick up for me, it was Ben. He argued with my dad for at least ten minutes trying to talk him out of kicking me out. It was no use. My dad was pissed off.”
“Well at least somebody stuck up for you.” she said as she reached in to hug him.
“I’m here for a reason.” said Victor.
“What it is it?” asked Lacy.
“Can I stay here for a while? Just until my dad cools off.” asked Victor.
“How long will you think that will be” asked Lacy.
“I don’t know. It could be a few days it could be never.” answered Victor.
“I don’t know Victor. Money is really tight with my family now. I don’t think that we can support you. We’re not even having Thanksgiving dinner, its too much money.” said Lacy.
“Can you at least ask?” pleaded Victor.
“Sure, I’ll give it a shot, but its going to be a waist of time.” said Lacy.
Lacy went down stairs and Victor followed her.
“Mom, Dad; can we talk?” Lacy summoned her parents.
“Sure honey; what is it?” asked Mrs. F
“Victor was kicked out of his house, and he was wondering is he could stay here for a little while until his dad cools off.” said Lacy.
“How long would this be for, Victor?” asked Mr. F.
“I don’t really know Mr. Ferguson. My dad was really mad. It could be a few days, it could be for a very long time.” said Victor.
“Why did your father kick you out Victor?” asked Mrs. F.
“Mom, don’t ask him that.” said Lacy.
“No, it’s okay. They might as well know. Come it down on the couch.” they did, Victor and Lacy followed. “My dad kicked me out of the house because I told the family that I was gay.” Mr. and Mrs. F were speechless.
“I don’t blame him either. Get out; I don’t want you talking to my daughter any more.” said Mr. F.
“Dad!”
“Oh Rick, this is no time to be ignorant. Listen Victor, I would love to help you, but if your not sure when your dad will let you back in the house, we can’t let you live here. We just don’t have the money if it’s going to be long term.” said Mrs. F.
“That’s okay Mrs. F; I just thought I’d try.”
“Sorry Victor.” said Mrs. F.
Lucy Walked Victor out to the front porch.
“Sorry Vic, maybe you can try Eric’s house.”
“That’s okay, Ben said that if this didn’t work out, I could come live with him and his family.” said Victor.
“But he lives all the way in California.” said Lucy.
“It’s my only option.”
“But we’ll never see each other again.”
“We can write to each other, or even e-mail. It would be too expensive to call.” said Victor.
“I suppose. I’m sure gonna miss you Victor.” said Lacy. Lacy gave him a hug. She began to cry a little.
“Don’t cry, I’m not dying or anything.” said Victor.
“My best friend is moving to California, of coarse I’m gonna cry.”
“I have to go tell Ben, so that he and his family can pack up their stuff.”
Victor got back in his car to drive back home. When he got there, Ben was sitting in a chair on the front porch, reading a book, looking like he was trying to keep himself busy. Victor parked by the curb in front of the house. He walked up to Ben.
“Is it safe?” asked Victor.
“Yeah, dad went to the bar down the street, and mom hasn’t come out of her room since you left.” answered Ben.
“What about Ashley?” asked Victor.
“She was shocked at first, also a little confused, but I talked to her, and she’s okay now. How did it go with the Ferguson’s?” asked Ben.
“They said no.”
“Well, okay. I’ll go tell Carrie to get the kids stuff ready, and we’ll get on the road as soon as possible.” said Ben.
“Okay.” said Victor.
Ben went inside, Victor followed. Victor went straight for Ashley’s room. He knocked o the door. It took a little long for her to answer. He was about to knock again when she opened the door.
“Oh, it’s you.” said Ashley.
“Can I come in?” asked Victor.
“Sure.” said Ashley.
He walked in, and pulled out her desk chair. She sat on her bed.
“Listen, we need to talk.” said Victor.
“I know what gay means Victor. I’m not dumb.” said Ashley.
“No. Not about that.”
“Then what?” asked Ashley
“I’m leaving.”
“I know. Dad kicked you out. Of coarse you’re leaving until he cools off.” said Ashley.
“No Ashley, I’m leaving for good. I’m going to live with Ben in California.” said Victor.
“What? Dad’s going to cool off, you know he will. You can’t just leave. You can’t leave me here. I need you. You’re my big brother. Who’s gonna protect me from all the boys.”
“Who’s gonna protect me from all the boys.”
“I’m serious Vic. This is no time for a joke. You’re leaving to live in another state. I’m coming with you.”
“No. You can’t. You can’t just abandon mom and dad like that. Especially mom; she wont be able to handle both of her kids still living with her just gone in a flash. You need to stay.”
“Your not gonna fight me on this. Ben’s rich, I know he has room in that SUV and in his 50 million bedroom home.”
“Ash, you need to stay here. If Ben has to get custody of me, I don’t know if he can get custody of you. You need to think; this is permanent; new school, new home, new life Ash. Can you handle something like that?” said Victor.
“Of course, I hate it here anyway. I can’t think of a better way to be raised. Growing up with your two big brothers, it’s probably heaven.”
“Let me got tell Ben.”
“You mean it, you’re gonna let me come?”
“Yeah; pack your things, but just necessities and clothes. We can buy you new stuff in California.”
“Where does he live again?”
“In Malibu.” said Victor.
“Ashley Hansen, from Malibu. It has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?” asked Ashley.
“Yeah, yeah; just pack up. Do it quick, before dad gets home.” said Victor.
Victor went to the guest room, where Ben was packing, and knocked on the door. Carrie answered the door.
“Hey Vic, are you okay?” asked Carrie
“Yeah, I will be as soon as we get out of here. Listen, can I talk to Ben alone for a minute?”
“Sure” said Carrie. She left the room and shut the door.
“Ashley’s coming too.”
“What! She can’t. She needs to stay here for mom.”
“That’s what I told her, but she nearly broke out in tears when she grasped the concept of never seeing me again. I tried to talk her out of it, but it was impossible. So I told her that she could come.”
“Okay, I guess that add one more to the gang.”
It took everybody about fifteen minutes to be totally packed up. They loaded everything into the SUV, Ben and his family got into it. Victor and Ashley went back into the house to get a few more things that they wanted to carry on them. They met back up in the hallway.
“You all set?” asked Victor.
“Yeah…OH! I forgot to say goodbye to mom.” said Ashley.
“No, just leave her.”
“Why?” asked Ashley
“It’ll be easier for her if we didn’t. Trust me.”
“Okay, let’s go.”
They got into the car, and they were off. Victor asked Ben to stop by Eric’s house so that he may say goodbye to him. They were there for about ten minutes, and then they were done. Eric came out to wave goodbye as they left the driveway.
As they left the city, a sudden feeling of relief came over Victor. He was finally free. It was about a fourteen hour car drive to Malibu, California. When they got there, Ben’s house looked like a mansion to Vic, and Ashley. When they walked in, Victor dropped his bags to his side, fell to his knees, and began to cry.
“What’s wrong Victor?” asked Ben
“I finally feel like I’m at home.”
“Well, that was the idea, wasn’t it?”
A few weeks after Victor and Ashley got settled in; Ben gave their father a call. He was a wreck, drunk. He had to put their mother in a mental institution. She hadn’t talked since the day that Victor came out. Ben offered to pay for the bill, but when he offered, their dad hung up the phone.
Ben didn’t care about their parents anymore. Just as long as his little brother and sister were happy where hey were. He never once had a second thought about the decision that he made.
