The Secret
|
Victor sat up in his bed, rubbing his eyes. He looks around his bedroom. It’s a mess. What woke him up? Was it the savory smell of bacon? Was it the sweet smell of pancakes?
Ben and his family are home for Thanksgiving. He can hear Ben’s kids, the twins, running around and making noise on the hardwood floor. He gets up from the bed; he stepped on an old pair of shoes. He raises his arms in the air, there’s nothing better than a good stretch.
He moves some dirty clothes around; he’s looking for some slippers. He has no t-shirt on, just some plaid black and white pajama bottoms on. He looks at the clock. It’s 10:30. He’s meeting Eric and Lacy, his best friends, at the movies at noon. He’d better hurry if he was going to be on time. He throws on a wrinkled t-shirt. He found his slippers. He slips them on.
He leaves his bedroom. The twins run by him, his younger sister, Ashley, running after them. “Morning sis.” “Morning Victor.” He goes into the bathroom across the hall from his room. Victor looks into the mirror; his hair is a total mess. Its dark brown, it’s down to his ears. He runs a brush through it. He walks to the toilet to pee.
Victor washes his hands, and then brushes his teeth. He then runs water against his face. He feels refreshed. He goes into the kitchen, down the hall. His mother is still cooking breakfast. Ben is at the table with dad; they’re reading the newspaper and drinking coffee. Carrie, Ben’s wife, is outside hanging the sheets to dry.
“Ken…David. Stop that running around.” Ben says sternly without looking away from the newspaper.
Mom looked back and saw Victor walk into the kitchen. She smiled. He went to grab a coffee cup from the cupboard. He poured himself some coffee. He mixed in some cream and sugar, and then took a sip. He then sat down at the table next to Ben.
“You shouldn’t drink coffee Victor, you’re only seventeen, and it stunts your growth.”
“Mom, I’ve been drinking coffee since I was fourteen, you didn’t say anything then. Besides, I’m six foot, two, I don’t think I need to grow anymore.” Victor explained.
“Well, anyway, I’m making pancakes. Would you like some?” asked mom
“Sure, I’ll take some.” said Victor
“How many?” said mom.
“Um……two.” said Victor.
“Okay.” said mom.
His mom served him his pancakes, with some bacon on the side. The pancakes were blueberry, Victor’s favorite. He finished; then washed his plate and cup. “I’m meeting Eric and Lacy in about an hour, so I’m going to get ready.” His mother didn’t say anything, so he just left the kitchen. She didn’t approve of Eric, she always had her suspicions about Eric being gay, but it was far from the truth.
It took about twenty minutes for Victor to get ready. His cell phone rang, it was Eric. Eric’s car wouldn’t start, so Victor would have to pick up Lacy and him at Eric’s house instead of meeting them.
Victor grabbed his keys, said goodbye to his family, then left to go pick them up. When he got there Lacy reached the front seat of the car before Eric could even get out of the folding chair he was sitting in on his driveway. Eric put the chair away, closed the garage, and then got into the back seat of Victors 2006 Honda Civic. They were off. A few minutes into the drive, Lacy struck up a conversation.
“Have you told your parents yet?” asked Lacy.
“Not now Lacy. It’s a bad time. Ben’s in town.” said Victor.
“That’s perfect, you can tell him too.” said Lacy.
“I’m not ready to just tell the whole world Lacy.” said Victor.
“Ben isn’t the whole world, he’s your brother, he’s family.” said Lacy.
“Just leave him alone Lacy. He’ll tell them when he’s ready.” said Eric.
“It’s for his own good.” said Lacy.
“He’ll let know who he wants to let know when he’s ready. Now just drop it.” said Eric.
The movie theater was packed, so they decided to go to the one inside of the mall. While waiting for Lacy to come out of the bathroom at the mall, they ran into Billy Stern, and Ric Dawson. The two bullies from their school. Billy was a junior like Eric and Victor. He was tall, and muscular, and also very intimidating, but not to Eric and Victor. They were used to Billy’s intimidation schemes. Ric was tall and sort of lanky. Ric wore all black, simply because that was the only color that Billy ever wore. Ric was a sophomore, and he idolized Billy, he wanted to be just like him.
Billy has hated Eric and Victor since the sixth grade. Billy and his apprentice walked up to the two friends.
“What’s up fag? Are ya on a date?” said Billy. Victor felt himself cringe on the inside.
“Takes a fag to know a fag.” said Eric.
“I have to pee.” said Victor.
Victor headed towards the bathroom. Billy grabbed Victor by the hair on the back of his head.
“Oh no, you’re not goin’ anywhere ya faggot.” said Billy.
“Ha, yeah, faggot.” said Ric.
“Don’t call me that.” said Victor.
“Why? Is it true?” said Billy.
“I bet it is.” said Ric.
“I need to pee.” said Victor.
“Oh; well; let me escort you to the bathroom.” said Billy.
Billy pulled him by the hair and took him to the bathroom. There was only one person in the bathroom; it was a little kid about Ashley’s age, he was washing his hands at the sink. Billy screamed for him to beat it. The kid ran out of the bathroom in fear. After the kid was gone, Billy threw Victor to the hard floor.
Once Victor had finished reacting to the impact, Billy gave him a good kick to the ribs, Ric did the same. The both of them took turns kicking Victor for a while. Then Billy knelt on the floor and began to punch him in the face repeatedly. At this point, Ben unexpectedly walked into the bathroom.
“Hey! What’s going on here?”
Ben picked Billy up by the back of his leather jacket, and threw him against an empty wall. “Get out of here!” Ben yelled. He then knelt down to help his little brother up from the floor. Ben was concerned and was repeatedly asking him what happened and if he was okay, but Victor wouldn’t answer. Ben walked him back to where he and Eric were waiting for Lacy. Lacy was waiting with Eric. Victor sat down next to them in pain.
“Victor; give Eric your keys so that way he can drive your car home. I’ll give you a ride back.” said Ben. Victor obeyed.
“Let’s go Lacy.” said Eric, and then they all left together.
During the car ride home, Ben tied to get some answers from Victor one last time, but it was no use, Victor still wouldn’t answer. Ben had never seen his little brother act so weird, he was very worried; he didn’t want anything bad to happen to him. They got home and walked in the door, their mother immediately saw Victor’s beaten up face, and the pain he was in.
“What happened?” asked his mom.
“That’s what I would like to know.” said Ben.
“I was jumped okay, now leave it alone.” Victor was annoyed and left to his room in a hurry. He lied in his bed, thinking. He thought about what Lacy had said in the car on the way to the movies. He figured that it was time to tell his family. So, he gathered the whole family into the living room. His parents, Ben and his wife, and his sister, were all in the living room together.
“You guys; I have something to tell you.”
